View Full Version : Las Vegas "Terrorist Attack"

Nowhere on any articles the "shooter" is labelled as terrorist, just an old white gunman out on crazed shooting spree.

Tell me, does it have to be religious (specifically Islamic) driven to be considered as "terrorism"?

Media (esp Fairfax) pisses me off greatly evermore.

The definition of Terrorism is to effect a Political change.

Killing for the sake of Mayhem and destruction isn't Terrorism.

Although ISIS have claimed this - they've claimed things before - waiting for more details.

64 retired accountant with load of money on him and with some gambling problems. So doubt he is an ISIS recruit doesn't fit the profile.
Most ISIS recruits are young half broke and wants revenge of a pass incident or attack that might mentally disturb him for unknown reason.

Yes - terrorism is politically motivated - no politics no terrorism.

Typical of errant accountants - was probably loaded with "other peoples money" - maybe even ISIS money - that could be the connection!

not sure whats worse... looney person going off nut, or terrorists.

Terrorism is about instilling fear to force another party to change something.

The old saying "one mans terrorist = another mans freedom fighter", Nelson Mandela, Irgun, Mujaheedin, American revolutionaries etc depends on which side of history you are on.

It depends on which side of the law you're on.

Terrorism is historically defined as acts of war by organised groups outside of the rules governing national armed forces legally at war.

In theory that includes national forces acting outside those rules.

It doesn't include solo nutters, no matter how profoundly upset by country music they might be.

Nah, according to my dictionary it has to be in pursuit of a political aim. That would have been my guess, but I thought I'd better check.

The claim by Daesh, you can call them ISIS but they like that, is not credible - yet. Which is a problem with a lot of the early reporting. A 64 year old white millionaire who owned various properties and two airplanes doesn't seem like yer average radical muslim convert.

Google came in for a lot of criticism, early on they linked to 4chan items which were basic conspiracy theory rubbish. The denizens of 4chan even named a wrong suspect, before settling down to try and paint the shooter as antifa or BLM or anything else that entered their disordered minds. Although the fact that the victims were country music fans many of whom would be right thinking people could lead to the assumption that the shooter was a left wing extremist. Assuming there was any logic involved at all?

Facebook too copped flak for some of their content.

The weapons he used were interesting, I hadn't even heard of bump frames or bump stocks previously but there's a heap of stuff about them on YouTube.

Normally the shooting he was doing would be inaccurate as Hell but if you've got 20,000 people on a big dance floor accuracy is not a requirement.

I hope his partner can shed some light on his motives.

About the only thing you can take out of this is that when a major event happens the initial news reports will be wrong. The advances in technology in recent years only exacerbate that, they certainly don't improve things.

Afterthought: This latest mass shooting has often been referred to as "the biggest ever" or similar. That is not true, there have been bigger but the victims of those in most instances were black, so perhaps they don't count? Most respectable US news media now use the phrase "biggest in modern times".

Something to add - Bump stocks aren't required for rapid-fire semi-auto techniques - what they do, is make it much easier to perform said technique - there's a couple of Jerry Miculek videos where he demonstrates "full auto" type firing, using the bump-firing technique, but without a bump/slide stock.

Not sure either were labelled that by US press, at the time. Unabomber rather than terrorist. Labelled a domestic terrorist in historical articles, so it is a conditional terrorist label because it doesn't fit the definitive narrative. Domestic terrorist for McVeigh as well in historical articles, but disgruntled ex-military Branch-Davidian supporter at the time. By the time of the trial in '97 that had changed to terrorist.

Not sure how you define (legal), however (legal) or otherwise the total number of guns is going to be a significant factor in the number of gun deaths, that's without considering ease of purchase and ability to carry.....

The obvious supposition is that they like guns and they like shooting each other with them, if they weren't so easily available it would probably make it more difficult to shoot each other. The downside of more restrictive gun laws is that it affects law abiding people, and the nutjobs will probably still find a way around them anyway...

and i'm not sure how they define "guns per 100 inhabitants". at any rate my stats would be older than those, and were likely leaning toward sporting rifles.
i note with some curiosity that the majority are suicides (and new zealand's rate seems low)

and therein, as the bard will tell you, lies the rub. the legislature only affects the good citizen. criminals remain unaffected. and as said, this guy was white, with (as yet) no indicators of a predilection to mass homicide.
personally, me and my homies and our stockpiles of illegal firearms have never shot anyone we didn't intend to, so it isn't even a matter of availability. but intent

What surprised me was the report (if it's true to start with) that he'd wheeled 23 suitcases into his room over a period of days.

Does gun control eliminate these types of events? Not altogether, but it should make it harder for one civilian to accumulate a stash like this chap had, surely?

I wouldn't use the label terrorist, this chap had gone postal in a well thought out manner.

As details emerge about the Las Vegas gunman who killed at least 58 people and injured more than 500 others, an online debate has begun about why Stephen Paddock has not been labelled a terrorist.

Instead the 64-year-old who opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel towards an open-air music festival on Sunday evening has been described by news outlets as a "lone wolf", a "granddad", a "gambler", and a "former accountant", but not a terrorist.

I'll concede that if any city should expect chainsawed hookers in hotel rooms it's Vegas....But it's my understanding that the level of security oversight in the Vegas hotels is higher than pretty well anywhere else. They're very protective of the "family fun" aspect and want to know about the hookers before anyone else...

This aspect was discussed on a US firearms users group I follow. The Mandalay Bay is a seriously big, seriously busy hotel. There's people moving suitcases, golf bags, and guitar cases etc all over the place. He had three days to move everything up too. If he had a dnd sign on the door, housekeeping wouldn't have entered the room so nobody would have noticed anything unusual.

funny. i've played with a rugger 22 with a bump stock,

What is a rugger 22? A buggered Ruger perhaps?

There are various sound clips of his firing. The first one I heard, the rate of fire slowed then sped up again. It sounded odd. The others apparently didn't sound like that, the speed was consistent.
People who had not heard the odd one were guessing that he had a machine gun up there. It was the odd sounding one that led to speculation about a bump stock. From the amount of shooting he was doing he likely had several rifles fitted with bump stocks.

As for speculation about psychotropic medication, the first report I saw mentioned valium. Some years ago I read an article that in the few dozen previous mass shooting events in the US of A all of the culprits had been on Prozac, alone or in combination with other drugs. A fairly serious side effect I'd have thought, but then Trump has recently signed that a firearms permit cannot be refused on mental health grounds. Marvellous, just bloody marvellous. :brick:

The shooting happened just after 10pm, but sunset at this time of the year in Las Vegas is just after 6pm.

If those windows were broken 4 hours before the shooting even started - that would be fucking weird.

As to why so many guns.....

Shooting makes barrels very hot,
Shooting on auto makes barrels incredibly hot...

You never see that on Rambo movies but you supposed to change your barrel after every 100 rounds....
At 600/800 rounds a minute that gives you about 10 seconds or less on full auto.

Machine guns have quick changeable barrels. M16 and the like don't. ... so if you plan on playing Rambo for any length of time you need shit loads of shoddy military style rifles...

What happens if you don't change barrels after 100 rounds....?
They get so hot that I have seen them bend like a banana...
And I have also seen barrels blow off completely.

But when people are shooting back you don't always stop to change barrels.....

Why so many suitcases?

One box of 800 rounds of 7.62 (308 in Merica) only lasts a bit over a minute but takes 2 guys to carry...
5.56 mm is a lot lighter but still....

From the Blue Lives Matter website originally, it showed up as a discussion topic on a board I watch. Some of the LEOs on the board didn't agree with Chief Craig, they thought that unknown dudes producing a gun during an active shooter situation could be hazardous to their health.

Chief James Craig Doesn’t Like Trained Officers Being Disarmed

Detroit, MI – Detroit Police Chief James Craig said on Monday that off-duty police officers who were attending the concert in Las Vegas on Sunday night should have been armed, and that more should be done to prevent mass shootings.

Fifty-nine victims have died, and 567 victims were injured in Sunday night’s mass shooting at the Jason Aldean concert outside the Mandalay Bay Resort, according to WXYZ.

The suspect, Steven Paddock, killed himself as police officers breached his room on the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay.

It was a scene of terror, fear, and chaos, as shots rang out while performer Jason Aldean was on stage. It was the final night of the three-day Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas Village.

One witness, Meghan Kearney, told MSNBC, “We heard what sounded like firecrackers going off. Then all of a sudden we heard what sounded like a machine gun. People started screaming that they were hit… When we started running out there were probably a couple hundred [people] on the ground.”

She said, “People kept dropping and dropping. … People were getting shot one foot away from us,” she said. “People were trying to save their friends. There were gunshots everywhere. Helping them would’ve meant that we got shot, too.”

In a press conference, Chief James Craig said, “I’m told they (off-duty officers) were not allowed to bring in their firearm. That is a problem for me.”

He has long advocated for off-duty police officers to be able to carry their weapons, and praised the MLB for allowing them to do so.

At the same time, he criticized the NFL for not allowing police officers, including federal officers, to have their weapons with them at a game.

Chief Craig said, “In these times we’re in right now, we have to find ways to mitigate threats. We have to consider the off-duty officer a force multiplier.”

“We have to start thinking on risk mitigation. We need to think about force multipliers and the only way we do that is to think about off-duty officers,” he added.

He said that the Las Vegas Police Department “moved quickly to take out the threat,” according to ClickonDetroit. He also said that something should be done to prevent people from stockpiling guns in a motel room.

Chief Craig said, “While off-duty officers might not have saved lives in the Vegas massacre attack, every second counts, and armed off-duty officers must be equipped to take out active shooters.”

“I mean, what good are they if they aren’t armed?”

At least sixteen firearms were reportedly found inside Paddock’s room, and investigators in Las Vegas are trying to determine how he got the weapons into his room, which he checked into on September 28, according to Fox News.

In addition to the weapons multiple very high-capacity magazines were found inside Paddock’s room; more weapons and ammunition were found at his residence after a search warrant was obtained.

Some of the weapons were high-powered rifles that were capable of penetrating a police officer’s body armor. A modified bump stock rifle was found, which allows a gun to simulate rapid automatic gunfire. The guns are being tested to determine if they were capable of firing automatically.

There is a problem when the reporters lack any understanding of the technical detail about which they are writing. I'll be charitable and assume they are referring to the bump stocks as a modification.

It's the same in NZ, if the press are required to mention a rifle it will invariably be described as 'high powered' - unless it was a 22.

The media don't refer to any of them, they did in the first day or two as 'the 58' but it's been all about the shooter since then.

They (narcissistic mass murders) seem to enter the weird realm of martyrdom via media coverage. I guess that's what they wanted all along?

To be fair the media are there to report the news and the people are dead so end of story in regards to them except for the human interest stories. The gunman and his motives on the other hand is ongoing relevant news and will be for quite some time.

Fast track to your own Wikipedia page. Is there a quicker way into the history books? It does mean leaving a stain on society but that doesn’t seem to bother them. Better evil than nothing must be the mantra.

no. but it would only take one counter sniper team to have finished it pretty quickly.

'Quickly' - how quickly?

For them to be called, arrive, assess, locate a counter position to the gunmans shooting position (Obviously not from the ground) and them shoot him?

even if CS became routine, and people DID know to look for, they'd never know how many teams there were, and once they'd taken a shot at the first, their time would become quickly limited.

I find it abhorrent that those who died during this cowardly attack are just ''numbers'' to the media. Why the gutless piece of shit who did this is getting so much world wide attention is beyond reasonable belief. Each "number" was a real living person who loved and was loved, of that I have no doubt.

His "science" seems OK, a lot of that is consistent with army basic training. It'll show up on YouTube as "crack and thump". My problem with his theory is that in none of the audio clips are there two rifles firing - and there have been a lot of people listening. If there was another rifle you'da thunk someone would've noticed?

I expect, however, that Katman will be along shortly.

I think both yourself and the video is making a fair few assumptions:

https://www.federalpremium.com/ammunition/rifle/caliber/223-rem

Same Calibre, same Manufacturer but different projectiles gives a variance of 3700 FPS to 2720 FPS - who is to say that he only bought one specific weight of projectile?

Not to mention we are also assuming that they are fired from the same rifle, with the same barrell length.

Interesting video - but it's making assumptions (not entirely unreasonable ones, mind) that it doesn't have the evidence to support.

It's raising questions that deserve to be investigated - not ignored.

Who said it was being ignored? In the Video - he's pointing to the Audio delay between impact and report as conclusive proof of a second shooter. It's not conclusive because it makes some very key assumptions - for which he doesn't have the evidence to make.

Another thought on this is that we are also assuming that the distance of the microphone between the impact and the shooter is constant and approximately at the point of Impact.

For example - if the microphone was moved to closer to the base of the Hotel, the lag would decrease (since the sound wave for the report propagates out from the Muzzle of the Rifle, whereas the Sound wave from the Impact propagates out from the point of Impact).

I'm saying that the Video (whilst interesting) jumps to a conclusion, based on some assumptions (even if they are relatively reasonable) and presents it as gospell fact.

What on earth could be the reason for police to chose 223?

They don't do daily armed patrols miles away from resupply,
Nor do they go through any large amounts of ammo.
Nor is it hard to get supplies delivered to the local cop shops.
