Why do racers have a black strip at the bottom of their visor?
Is it so they can't see their seedo?

They don't. That's a dark visor with a tearoff over the top.

as above its not,
i used to run a visor strip on my speedway car helmet to help with the sun in the early races, i had a tinted visor as well but it did not work that well in the shadows, and you did not have a lot of time to change the visor between the first and second heats if you ran the tint one in the setting sun,

What sort of tear offs are those? I have tear offs on my tinted visor and they aren't that prominent in color, they're more or less see-through and the visor looks as it did before the tear offs.

i'm guessing it's to do with camera angle and lighting.
