I have just completed the restoration of a Yamaha AS1 1970 which I bought as a wreck from a wrecker 4 years ago. I have no plate or anything like that. How do I go about getting it registered?

You need to do a document search then if there is no details get a JP sign off a declaration and then apply for a new rego.
Well thats what it was many years ago.
Go see vtnz.
PS awesome restoration
that looks like our local "Weststone" aggs on the driveways as well.

I will be watching with interest as I am starting the same process soon. One difference is that I have a number plate that may or may not be the one for the bike. No way to find out as it expired in the early 90s.

If you have a receipt to prove ownership that's a good start.

For something of that age the local branch of the vintage car club would be a good bet, they can point you in the direction of the right process.

No way to find out as it expired in the early 90s. I rang today and was advised that I need to take the bike to a VTNZ so they can sight the chassis number. From there a form is filled out related to lack of documentation and on from there. I think large amounts of cash may also be involved. They have records back to 95 apparently so you may be lucky.

92 or 93 so it is in the era when records fell into an alternate universe during the upgrade to a new system. How they managed that I have no idea. I have a vision of some bureaucrat saying "To save money we should burn the old stuff". :spanking:

On those lines: A friend once approached her council for a permit for house alterations. The council had a copy of the permit for a log burner - but they knew nothing of the house and garage there.

OK so here is progress so far. Turns out you can download the form from NZTA website. Form CA03 Alternative documents form. You need to fill this out. Attach photos of any numbers on the bike and any receipts for purchase. I have the Trademe records. Write a story about the bike and what has happened. Include a statutory declaration that you are telling the truth, the whole truth etc, get that all witnessed by a JP. Then pay NZTA $184 application fee and send the lot to Wellington and wait. Compliance and registration then follows and costs up to (gulp) $600. Hooray!!

Yeah the process can be long - but worth while - I have posted up about my reg process in this forum section, have a look if you get stuck

I checked your post and I pretty much am following your process. I have the original black plate for the bike now and a receipt with that reg number on it but not the frame number. I could possibly get a replacement receipt. Bryce from Buckets and Bits sold me the bike and he has been really helpful.
The bike is rideable so I am planning on riding it to VTNZ to get the sign off I need. Such a hassle to get a trailer etc.

book it in, that way if you get pulled up on the way there you've got proof that that is your mission

I’ve got the approval to register now so just need to get the bike to VTNZ. New problem. The bike is not charging so may get down there on a trailer. Anybody know a good auto electrician to check the charging system out on an old bike? Auckland based.

Cheers

compliance and rego costs, are you sure it's for a bike of this age as it may be generic including current rego costs? rather than classic rate

Mikkels

A friend had his done and cost around 600 all up to get a classic back on the road.

From memory my old 50's scooter was around that much, by the time the inspection, new rego and other bits and pieces are done.
