Bloody Hell that was so fuckin long over due it isn't funny!!
Every bloody Thursday from 5.30pm onward that lot would think they owned the roads around Leeston & Southbridge and I dunno how many close calls I've seen caused by them.
They'd use the rugby club carpark across from work as their gathering point, there were some bloody nasty sights stretching lycra to the max.....Alby Anderson (ex All Black) certainly knows how to test the quality of CIMA race suits
Hopefully none of the kids that are involved were part of the group that crashed though

Was the road closed? Were they racing? If the road wasn't closed there are a whole lot of infringements aren't there?
Back around the time of the Commonwealth games in Ch-ch I carried bike referees on the back of my Z1. There were four of us that did it regularly, all from the Pioneer Motorcycle Club and those cyclist guys were the cheatingist bastards. If they got a puncture they'd hang on to the back of the support vehicles and stuff to catch up, hence the need for mobile refs. These refs were ex-cyclists and mostly gone to fat, so an 18 stone lump who'd never been on a motorbike and me weighing 9 stone made for quite a lot of effort getting around corners.
During the games they raced on a closed road, up hackthorne rd, down dyers pass, round the river, across colombo st and somehow back to cashmere road, I can't quite remember but it was 5 hours on the bike. It was a stinking hot day and people were hosing us down at the top of hackthorne rd.
Sometimes the ref would want to watch a bunch of these cheating bastards and then he'd say "can you catch the leaders before they cross the start/finish? The road was closed and at the briefing in the morning the cops said that there was no speed limit but would we be sensible? Yes officer! We passed the Duke of Edinburgh in his Rolls, we were doing about 150k around the river somewhere. Coming down Dyers pass was monumental, those cyclists were all over the road, one went over the rail on one of the last couple of bends.
Finally to the point. After the games I carried refs on some other road-races and there were several incidents were whole bunches went down because of the close following. The roads weren't closed on these occasions. My job was to ride on the outside of the bunch and keep them inside the white line. I squeezed them sometimes otherwise they would've been in the oncoming traffic. I think I may have caused one of the accidents but I'm not admitting anything.
Cheers

If it was closed it would be a first as they never closed any of the roads in the past and they aren't officially holding a race meeting, it's just a social type event. The majority are wannabe race cyclists who like being seen in lycra & spending coin on fragile treddlies out of maybe 30 odd that usually attend there'd only be a couple who compete in official events.

having treadlies registered so they can pay road user charges will benefit them because the money raised can be used to promote safe riding courses, informative brochures, and a web site with ride safe videos on it. :weird:

The motorcycling community attracts wannabe racers too in their racing outfits. Sometimes there can be little difference in price between a mid priced sports bike and a top end carbon fibre cycle too.
Except with the increase in racing nessousness of the motorcycle "Outfit" comes an increase in safety and protection so really it's not a comparison is it fuckwit

Unfortunately it attracts twats who have no idea too
And as someone who raced pushbikes for a number of years with people who went on to represent NZ both at the Olympics & Commonwealth games I can say you have no idea how expensive top-end racing bikes can be and not the bullshit off the shelf mid range mass produced stuff but top line custom built items

Adventure pushbikes have more hysterical vision.....
Coz they don't have to try and keep up with the group.
Even though it is a race.....
Sorry yet another thread of lycra gone to the dogs....

:nono: The majority actually start out in their chosen field of recreation as willing learners eager to improve their knowledge & better themselves, then there's idiots who flounder their way along spewing out rectal discharge with no idea of what they're talking about  you could've filled bromley up a couple of times by now :oi-grr:

do cyclists have to follow the road code?
if so, isn't there a law that says if a road user isn't going the speed limit they must pull over as soon as safe to allow vehicles capable of the speed limit to pass?
