What Summer gear would you recommend for ADV/touring

Hi guys,

I am hot. I mean it is hot. And I am sweating. My RevIt jacket is too hot. The Draggin jeans I am wearing are ok. And I need some summer gloves. Do you have any recommendation? What are you wearing in summer? What's your favorite jacket and gloves? Something which still leaves me some $$$ for petrol. But is still a good quality and cool.

While many on here say it is better to sweat in a protective jacket than end up dead if you want to keep cool while still having some protection why not get a light shell jacket and wear a protective vest under it. Obviously how much protection you need depends on how often and to what extent you exceed the speed limit too.

Totally agree with you. Summer jacket doesn't mean to me less protection. I have seen jackets with removable panels which open up a mesh covered area to let the air through. I was thinking along that line.

But you are right, I would never trade safety for comfort.

I have worn in the past a leather jacket that was perforated in fact you could get cold in it at night and it was Ideal for riding in the hot weather.

I bought it off Motomail it was made by Berik.

I have r Jay bandit gloves from cycle treads and an Italian axo sport summer jacket. They work pretty good.

So I rode up and down the West Coast of the South Island 2 weeks ago. Knowing the forecast was looking like a scorcher I decided not to wear the leather jacket. it's reasonably cool without the winter liner but has no vents. So I decide to try the new 1Tonne winter Dual jacket I bought this year. It was awesome in WINTER. So I removed the thermal liner and thinking, clever me with 5 vents this will be the coolest of cool, while still safe.

Doh! I forgot it has a 100% water proof membrane that is ALSO removeable. What an idiot I was. So we are hitting 33 to 35 degrees around Tekapo. I'm dying from heat stroke and although the 5 air vents were opened and a slight cooler feeling came through they didn't bloody work near as well as I expected.

I get home after four days of wearing a sauna and as I go to clean the jacket I fucking discover the waterproof membrane was still inside the jacket! Are you shitting me! So I went for a short blat without the membrane to see if it would have made a difference. Bastard, bastard, bastard, pay attention next time. These jackets are getting too clever for "mature' dudes like me.

I wear a merino base layer, sounds counter intuitive but helps your skin breath and wick away moisture.

RST Adventure Pro II jacket and pants has great vents.

Really hot weather and just an under-layer of a Kathmandu synthetic t-shirt thingy, which has some magic witchcraft cooling ability. Apparently athletes wear them... so that rules me right out.

I fucking hate textile jackets in summer. You sweat more than a rapist.

I find if I get out early, make the most of the mornings, the day is far more comfortable.
The dri-rider gear I have has zip-off sleeves, so therefore pretty good for the trails but not for the road.
With a motorcycle shirt, the jacket, gloves, that is enough to give me the protection I require for the likes of the 42nd traverse etc....(slow speed)
Mind you, like trail rides, falling off at slow speed, don't matter what you got on when the bike gets tangled with ya!

Dress up to dress down, just like tramping. That's the theory I have maintained....we know the climate can change at any moment.

Summers here are frequently around or over 30 degrees C but our winters get pretty bloody cold too (snow, ice, often 1 degree or lower) I've got 4 leather jackets with different degrees of perforation and each one has a removable "winter" liner. I'm pretty good with any of them all year 'round, really. Paired with some Draggin's, some ROSSI Bike boots (https://everythingaustralian.com.au/811-vision-motorcycle-boot.html) (I have size 13 feet and struggle to find colourful power-ranger sport boots to fit my hooves) and a set of Dainese summer leather gloves, I can't fault any of it.. That being said, I don't do adventure riding, I'm normally cruising about on the Ducati and hooning around the city on my spasticated scooter, but they still survive anything I've thrown at them so far.

I've also usually got a backpack with a jumper if I need an extra layer and a big, 1.5 litre bottle of water which I usually polish off in a day's riding. Lots of breaks, stay hydrated, stay cool :)

Summer gear on a budget, I run a rjays mesh jacket. Has the shoulder and elbow pads, back protector etc, it's a fully mesh jacket and it's freaking fantastic

It’s a good time to buy them in from the northern hemisphere as it’s winter.

I went and investigated these (vid review) last night and they look rather sensible.
The sand3 has larger vents than the 2.
I'm quite impressed with the trousers but wonder how waterproof the inseam vent zip would be. Had a pair with similar vents (different manufacturer) and they leaked more than a cabinet press room.
