This is not my story to tell but if it causes someone to think?

Some of the more cretinous public comments are indicative of the standard of some of the driving in this country. Be careful out there.

And best wishes to the rider for a successful recovery.

It would be interesting to get the scene maps and vehicle speeds and masses from say a years worth of serious bike crashes; then substitute the bike for a car.
Now for every third or fourth crash place multiple passengers in the car. Now let’s recalculate the death and injury number.
Because what’s happening is a motorist coming the other way makes a mistake and some poor bastard on a bike gets hit for being in wrong place at wrong time....
Sad indictment on society the victim blaming in a case where the other persons actions were clearly the major if not all the factors of the crash...

39 pedestrians were killed last year, nearly as many as bikers. And only 11 of those were young enough to be innocent kids with no road sense. So where is the outcry about the costs of pedestrians to society???

It would seem that being at fault in a serious accident did not cause serious reflection and a change of lifestyle.

How many of those pedestrians were walking in a legal or sensible fashion though?

Manners Mall in Welly comes to mind, jay walker too busy looking at his/her phone gets hit by bus. Darwinism in action.

Drunk staggering down the centre line in dark clothes after midnight on a country road, gets clobbered by a vehicle.

39 pedestrians is a lot, but I'd love to see more of the context. How do you protect people from their own stupidity? Or more to the point, should we?

Absolutely. Some of the comments on stuff article are rather disheartening...

Super unintentional fuckwit the third thinks speed was involved.......

Speed was likely the prime culprit, for more speed on the part of the pedestrians may have prevented some of the accidents :weep:

Never say never....

I see a day under the J um Cinda regime where the zero carbon crap is fully implemented. People can no longer afford to pushbike, let alone own or hire an electric car as there's a thousand consumption taxes on everything.
So people start walking everywhere. By now you cant buy a watch or phone that doesn't have an always on fitness/step tracker/gps and always on 6G cell connection. The extra calories burned means you need to eat more so you will pay more carbon tax to stop the beauracratic regime from consuming itself....

And there you have the answer

Yes we do protect people from their own stupidity, so they have no need to ever learn. Just last week, there was a report on the Darwin Award candidate whom died as a result of trying to deliberately cut through an electrical cable, with a pair of scissors. It wasn't a nice death, as the scissors fused into his had and even after he was dead, he was still 'live' - just not alive. We had another, a few weeks before, plugging her phone charger in to a mains socket, whilst in the bath. My electric shaver has an LED display and gives specific instructions to put the electrical item under a running tap to clean it. What is that teaching those whom do not know?

These stupid accidents will become more and more common, as we continue to dumb down the populations of the earth, with non-sense technology, to prevent brains having to work.

AND don't get me started on the shit4brains 'Flat Earth Society'. Apparently a super intelligent former England bowler is a member. His name sounds a little like 'FuckOff'

The only good out of them is it appear that there is a a perception that we are all mad bastards hell bent on high speed glory. Don;t mess with those crazy bastards and lock up ya daughters. Can't have it getting too mainstream.

Keyboard warriors are in every sector - I know via work that some of the stuff posted about the company I work for is just made up bullocks. Fabrication to suit someones ego.

Very few on here want tougher penalties for those at fault though no doubt motivated by a fear of being at fault themselves. Nothing will change though unless those at fault start having to pay more. On the positive side of the current situation should we ever be at fault we will not lose our houses.

Making sure you persecute the right persons at fault is the hardest bit, even those specifically trained, IE "serious crash units" struggle sometimes to get the full story.

Thats why many people have dashcams today to assist in proving fault. Buying one of those would be far cheaper than hiring a lawyer if you had to go to court.

I didn't know that most crashes were head on

And you wrote that under a link to the recent doings of the "at fault" driver who is allegedly a gang member with over 50 jail sentences behind him, and who is currently locked up awaiting his day in court on the latest batch of multiple charges. On what planet is there any liklihood of him actually "paying" anything?

There are drivers around owing multiple thousands, ten thousand or more, and they make no attempt to pay anything, they just keep racking up the fines. The Justice Dept is a joke. In one instance at work I set an insurance company on to a turkey who owed over six thousand in fines. I was hoping that the company might be more diligent in chasing him for payment than the Justice Department had been. If not he'd have just had a few more thousand added to his tally.

The fuckwit isn't talking about the justice system rather he is talking about ACC fining/taxing/charging at fault people.

Don't worry guys, the problem is as good as already sorted.

Someone really dumb is going to chat to the police about Green Party policy, because if we were Sweden ......................

Funny you should post that,
travelled to Te Kuiti through the safety roundabout for Waitomo

sikh driver and his missus stopped dead across the exit, just stopped, blocked the whole exit.

lucky I am an Aucklander used to such manouveres, had hung back expecting such chaos. But the car behind me wasn’t. Dodged the bullet and gunned it between the car and the edge of the roadworks.....

a few few choice words were heard, forgotten later when I went for a tiki tour through the excellent countryside after a business meeting.

double the acc levy but make it so the fee is imposed against the rider not against the bike (ie you can then own and reg. multiple bikes but only pay the acc levy once)

The levy is well high enough already but the multiple bikes 1 plate idea should come in

They have since expanded on that statement and its even worse. They are stopping money on the big projects that help many and instead are going to spray and pray with minor improvements on dangerous secondary routes. However when you look at the thousands of these other dangerous rural routes where fatals occur its a drop in the ocean due to randomness and kms of roadway....

Don't worry under the zero carbon act no one will be able to afford to drive or ride anywhere anyway....

They binned the four lane expressway between napier and hastings, with a median barrier that WOULD have saved lives. Now the neverending long gentle curves, couple with minor fatigue and poverty stricken residents walking the route will contine to be one of the deadliest roads in NZ.
At least the Nats got the airport roundabout at westshore built, just about finished. This WILL save several lives a year at least.
Although they have made it the typical NZTA style of looking big but actually a size down into the perfect truck rollover radius. And with it incorporating a crossing for the cycle network it could be bad news for someone.

On a side note our council/airport authority has introduced 'waiting' fines. You can park for free for up to 30mins.... BUT go over that and your paying the daily charge of $15 which could be very easy as if you arrive slightly early and then your passenger plane is delayed ever so slightly, pisses around getting their luggage etc... No mention of how long is ok for pick up and drop off before its called waiting...????
