Anyone tarded an XR600?

Been thinking of getting rid of the DRZ and converting a late 80's, early 90's XR600 to a motard.

Will any 17" wheels suffice? I'm assuming spacers will have to made and a relocation bracket for an over-sized rotor.

I've seen a lot of spare plastics, seats, tanks etc. on eBay. Also Tusk do a lighting kit for the XR600 too.


Just seems like a good project keep me occupied.

I'm assuming you're just after the look....Ballard in Oz did big fin barrels and heads for them when he tweaked them as the cooling is a tad marginal....

My understanding is that the "big fins" were actually welded on pieces.

Definitely the look. Also I like the simplicity, it's something a borderline retard like me could work on.

The eighties models are my favs, i've still got my 86 in the shed, that bike has done everything from motocross to touring. All xr and xl's run hot but it's not the issue here that it would be in aussie or desert racing baja, good oil supply to cam journals is essential, the stators and cdi's are another weak point also rear shocks are crap from new and good luck finding a standard 17" rear drum hub in good condition.
I squeezed a 5" nsr250 wheel and disc brake set up into the std swing arm, same axle size from memory, CSL Cams in Palmy did a great job on a racy profile for the cam, cycleworks oversize header pipe.

like I said, the 400sm is a boring cutdown riced up version of the original bike, the E is what the bike is supposed to be, with motard wheels they are great but anyway, good luck with the xr600 (for the looks) the XR650R would be way more fun as a motard

Yes, yes I know the 400SM is the watered down, restricted version of the E model. All I'd need is the flat slide carb and I'm there. I also do realize the 650R would make the better bike but hey I'm not made of money.
