It's a hot button topic I know, but today I went on a group ride :shit::shit::shit::shit:
No dogs were harmed :blink::woohoo::blink::woohoo:
We used forward observation, situational awareness, good positioning and SSV, made good progress, did some overtakes even :confused::laugh::confused:
No speeding tickets, although I did go thru a booze bus stop late today :bleh::eek::bleh::Police::bleh::eek::Police:
There were no evasive actions required, we must have been lucky :shutup::sunny::facepalm::shutup::sunny:
Never had to think about putting a foot down mid corner, even though I've been reading somewhere this would be an excellent idea :violin::2guns::violin::2guns:
What just didn't make sense is how all the stuff I've read somewhere, or heard about on the yootoobs, never happened to us :jerry::laugh::jerry::apumpin::no:
My biggest hurdle right now is whether to have a beer or do some more homework :drinknsin:second::Offtopic::bye:

Congratulations....and I'm jealous as hell. You can go on a ride without the chance of encountering the dreaded Cassina....
We Canterbury residents have to watch carefully for someone putting their feet down on corners - and dodging dogs.

Yes I know chaps, it's a flamin' miracle alright. I picked up a Lotto ticket on the way home Akzle, will let you know on Sunday whether it was lucky, or if I used up all my luck on the ride...
It would indeed be nerve wracking living in cassina territory, for you'd need to be really really lucky to make your way thru a ride...but you do have some good riding skools and instructors on your patch :2thumbsup

There is a road in the North Is called The Takas (I think) that also attracts crazy group riders from what I have read.
You read wrong. Again.
The Rimutaka Hill road is a very short and insignificant ride and recent "improvements" have made it even less interesting. The main attraction for Wellington riders is that it's almost on their door step. It really doen't justify inclusion on anybody's list of top rides.

So you went on a civilised group ride? If it was your very first you did indeed get lucky as they are not all the same especially on the road between ChCh and Akaroa. The forecast for Sunday in ChCh is fine so I bet all the crazy group riders will be out on that road and I bet none of them would have been spooked by the motorcycle death on the road last Sunday. Nah, not my first. But it is my choice to ride with those who have a certain standard or at least attitude.
A suspected training ride is not your average 'group ride' as everyone is on the same page.... nice troll attempt though... ;)
Whether it be a training ride with 3 to 5 riders, or a social outing with a dozen or more, doesn't really matter. I'm countering the blanket notion expressed by some that all group rides are dangerous.
You read wrong. Again.

Every town has a local scratchers' road, for Wellington the Rimutaka Hill certainly used to fit that description. Chch has the Akaroa GP. So in that sense, whilst the Rimutakas are only a brief stretch of road the number of incidents is relatively high. Just like the Akaroa GP

Oh it's in a book that I put under my pillow. Learning by osmosis is the new way :sunny::sunny:

As does any favourite stretch of road for those who choose to ride beyond their ability.

While my memory suggests Christchurch to Akaroa is superior to the Rimutaka Hill road, the bar is still set fairly low. Neither of those should make any serious list of top rides. Akaroa though is a lovely place to have fish and chips by the sea. (I was lucky the tide was in too.)
Having said that twice now I suppose I should give some examples of what I do consider a top ride? SH43, The Forgotten World Highway, The Gentle Annie (Taihape to Hastings), the Lewis Pass (pre Kaikoura dramas), and Greymouth to Wanaka (West Coast Highway plus?). I have done all of those both solo and with groups, without anyone hitting dogs or being under pressure to keep up. And at times we were definitely making progress.

Another road that is a good one is the Crown Range Rd between Queenstown and Wanaka. This is a very popular tourist route sinilar to ChCh to Akaraoa and takes about the same time between ChCh and Wanaka. While I do it about twice a year in my car I have not done it for years on my bike.
Been there done that, on a group ride too, but again it's only a short burst. We stayed at the Cardrona pub, but I'd have rather stayed at the flash new place next door.

Rimutakas was my home turf from 1966 (YDS3 Yam) I wouldn't call it scenic but it was a real test.
About 10 miles bridge to bridge. Along with that, came the many claims/war stories.
The Kaitokes before it was a nice warm up before the Hill until the road was straightened in I think the eighties?
About 4 years ago I moved to the Horowhenua and I haven't been back since.Probably a good thing I think, as I survived the many years scratching over there. Many didn't ! :(

Yup, exacary right. Some great multi bike rides to be had, for all levels and tastes.
Cassina, your riding ability is judged by what you post on KB. IMHO, not an accurate perspective. You are adamant that none of your accidents were avoidable, no fault on your part. Yet you recently posted that a rider fell off in front of you for no reason. Not a hint of speculation in your post, must have been magic or a hole in the gravity. You also refuse to accept that education is of any benefit to reducing risk despite being able to post on here because you were educated sufficiently to almost be able to read and write, let alone ride and drive.

Yah got plenty of time to argue in the Road Toll... Thread, yet you can't watch a total of 4 mins total of video and post a reply...
Very well.
We'll go with what you posted:
Crash 1:
In the first the rider was possibly speeding resulting in possible contributary fault on their part.
Crash 2:
In the second night overtake if the bike had pulled in further ahead closer to the truck they may have avoided being hit from behind. I saw no contributary fault with this crash.
Crash 3:
In the third with the guy wedging himself between the kerb and car it just looks like he had a death wish looking at the position of the car prior to him trying to squeeze in.
Crash 4:
The same goes for the lane filterer between moving traffic. You would have to have a death wish to try that.
Crash 5:
The crash under the bridge was target fixation on the rider that overtook.
Crash 6:
The dirt bike and the jeep may have been due to the rider getting sun strike.
For everyones reference:

Okay Katman, You've always been quite vocal about avoidable accidents - why don't you put forward your view? I get that you don't like how everyone jumps on Cassina - but you can comment on what you think were the causal factors of a crash without making any mention (positive or negative) towards said user.

Jesus fella if it takes you as long to go from ch ch to Wanaka as it does to get from Qtown to Wanaka over the crown range then you either drive fucking slow from Qtown to Wanaka or absolutely fly on the ch ch trip to Wanaka.:laugh::laugh:

Evidence here of how dangerous group riding is. Was ok until the other two turned up and increased the pressure.
