View Full Version : The worst stretch of road in Auckland

Qkchk

A couple of times a week I pass over what I deem as 'the worst excuse for tarmac'. It's a tiny stretch that covers just beyond the Western Springs off-ramp heading towards St Lukes. Instead of re-sealing the whole piece, they consistantly patch up the road, resulting in potholes to Timbucktoo...

My question is: What's your fav piece of shite road in Auckland?

I find the Cook St offramp is a bitch when it's wet. It sooo slippery when you try to go up Union St, almost need trainer wheels to stay upright. :weird:

A roads a road to me...... But the corner of the Pakuranga Motorway and Ti RaKau drive always has a nice sheet of oil on it every morning:angry:

As for the other side of the coin - ooooohhhh Cheenic Dwive - me loves it vewy vewy much

Franklin Rd, heading down the hill is a rutted worn out piece of shit excuse for tarmac. I ride the fucker everyday and your old VFR is doing it's best to ensure I'll never sire a young dover after riding it!

Two for me:

Beach Rd between a set of lights and just before Anzac Rd... it is incredibly slippery when its wet, so much so I actually tend to avoid the section, locked my back wheel a few times

Second, Tamaki Drive along the shore... doesn't look to bad until its raining, very exposed to the wind and a section of it next to the bridge just about only consists of tar snakes...

was just gonna say that - pretty much all of the southern motorway (and northern, although the approach to the bridge from the city is a bit wanky atm. did a big loop out ti rakau/alfriston/clevedo/maraetai/back to tirakau (at speed) today, and was surprised by the amount of water bleeding thru the road - especially mid corner. on someone elses bike!

Huia road is my worst one.... they decided to dig up the water pipes and proceed to leave glossy tar with ne gravel and bumps everywhere when they had finished...

I hardly drive around town, but, tween my place and massey is a road called red hills road, one sweeping left hand corner has the nastiest de-bump, been there for over six months now, right in the right wheel line for a car, and on a bike, I reckon that could send you into a small orbit, tested out the bumpstops in many a car.

And one road going from waimauku to old north, used to have a shit patch job that threatened to take my headlight out (in a car) by a mountain of tar/road fixing crap.

But hey, at least our taxes reflect the jobs right? right?

takanini motorway northern on-ramp... its a pisstake when there are cages (especially granny drivers in front) others its motoGP styles :2thumbsup

for those that dont know you have a 270degree turn, about 100m in which to get up to 100kmh from the lights... makes for some good fun when unobstructed but is a massive nuisance when you have to slow down and stand the bike up to avoid going up some cages ass.

I'd have to agree with that...

It's my daily commute to and from work, the tar snakes are a pain in the arse, and they can be very slippy when it rains (when doesn't it at the moment  )

Other than that, I'd have to say that the works at the top of Hobson St heading onto the Southern or NorthWeston highways is a pain, cage drivers not knowing where to go is a real danger.

Extend it to Orewa and it gets my vote.

Now where's the frikkin' button for those frikkin' volcanoes?

Keep going up Union to intersection of Hobson, Pitt and NW and Northern motorway on ramps. Go over the intersection from Hobson St accelerating and you take your life in your hands. So damn bumpy, best to just roll off the throttle until you hit the Motorway seal.

Turn right instead of left at the off ramp and head up to Grey Lynn. Trying to ride in the bus lane up Chinamans Hill is a nightmare. Off camber, slippery due to the bus lane paint in the wet, uneven seal, potholes, it has the lot! :dodge:

Symonds St aint so hot, heading down, just through the lights at K'Rd, the right hand lane especially is a shocker. Then on down the bottom, just as bad . . . man hole covers and bumps everywhere, on a long off camber downhill corner. Gotta love it!

Have to agree with Qkchick, a few weeks ago there were potholes there that wuold swallow your whole wheel.

Another fun one is Nugent st off of Kyber Pass. It's the only concrete road in Auckland that I know of and bumpy as hell. Traction is fine, when your wheels are in the ground that is.

Sounds kinda like the on-ramp to the North-Western from Pt. Chev...mint corner when there's no traffic :niceone: I sometimes take a 2km detour just to get on to the motorway from there :)

Vote for worst bit of Rd. has to be Mt. Eden Rd. Parts of that are just covered in tar snakes such that they cannot be avoided...killer in the wet!

Past there you go past the Micrsoft building where the bumps are real bad and you whack your balls on the fast rising seat after it has disappeared down a hole and comes bac up again.
Can't say I ever had that problem ;)

I've told you, stop pulling bloody wheelies mate and you wont have a problem. Not to mentio those rolling coaster stoppies on your bird - respect.

Anyhow the intersection Qkchk was reffering too is a shocker alright. Any road thats 50K and has heaps of cars on it pretty much sucks.

Total agree with you there gareth, I drive a dirty 3 tonne truck for work, at the close of that turn I'm at 50kms in 3rd gear with less than 50m to get to 100k, can get a tad messy when busy :brick:
Definately a lot of fun on a bike/rwd cage. :niceone:

The above, also bus lanes in general, don't get me wrong its great that we can use them but has anyone else noticed how slippery the lane gets when wet? Prob the green paint or somethin?

I totally agree with you. I travel North on Mt. Eden Rd and turn left over the bus lane before the village. Even the work cage squirms when its damp. :(

Crossing on the bike is done very cautiously when that green paint even looks moist.

All roads in Auckland are good nowdays. Maybe an occasional one pockmarked by road works, but they soon fix them up.
