View Full Version : Beware of Protecta Insurance 5% discount offer

I recently used protecta's online quote system for calculating a motorcycle premium and made a mental note of the price. A few days later I saw an advertisment on Motomail's Web site advertising 5% off protecta motorcycle insurance. I followed the link and filled in the details for a quote. The quote with the 5% discount was exactly the same as the previous price as the "full" payment had been inflated. To check this I cleared my browser cookies and entered the information again from a fresh session. Without any "discount" the price was the same as the "discounted" price. The discount is a flat out lie. The attached file has the Motomail discount offer on the left and the non discounted standard quote on the right, all insurance details were identical for both quotes. I have reported it to the commerce commission.

Nice work that man, well done.
Now go screw their reps socks off and get an even better deal.

Excellent news.
Thought it might have been simpler to report the error to Protecta or Motomail and get your 5% discount anyway.

It is not an error. Protecta are inflating the price then taking 5% off the inflated price to end up with the original premium price. The 5% discount is bait to get you to sign up, when you fill in the forms they still say they are giving you a discount but they are not.

This place really needs a sarcasm font.
Either a quote is good enough and you take the insurance out or it isn't and you don't. If a company says there is a 5 percent discount and there actually isn't you either take the insurance because they have the best deal without it or you query them. If they don't honour the advertised discount when they are taking your money up front then I imagine you are going to get completely fucked over by them if you ever have to make a claim. But then you wouldn't know that if your first move is going to the commerce commission to complain and then register here to spread the word.
Never had any dealings with the company but I imagine there are quite a few valid reasons why this could occur. If you search on this forum they seem to have a few happy customers. Not Mr Gayner though apparently.

I was with Protecta for a few years, the premium was good and got a further discount for IAM qualifications. Last year, the renewal notice had increased by $100, despite never ever having made a claim. No idea for the rationale behind that but Dave Hewer at Kiwibike found me a great price with Star.

Shit I should read the fine print more carefully. I never realised that was part of the service.
Probably be outsourcing it to some Indian chap I guess.
Still. A free handy!

That is something the commerce commission and the insurance ombudsman would be very interested in....

Fairly sure another company got arse-raped for pulling the same trick recently in the pre-x-mas sales. Consumer NZ and Com Com don't take lightly to that crap.

AND I'm about to pull the trigger on a new insurance policy
Using 4 computers, so they don't inflate the price when I go back for a second look.
The free 'hand job' may be a factor in the final decision. Hope it doesn't smell of curry
