View Full Version : CSL & Betty go for a sliiiiiiiiide

Ok well ya know how I've been riding out to Porirua 4 days a week? And ya know how yesterday morning it was really wet & horrid. Well there's this left hand sweeping bend at the top of the Ngauranga Gorge see, just before the J'Ville turn off heading North see...well Betty (she's my bike for those of you who don't know) & me we didn't make it see. We went sliding down the road instead, Betty on her side and me on my front (not quite sure how that happened!).
I've thought about it many times and all I could remember was riding along, in a more cautious fashion due to the wet, and Betty sliding, I didn't feel the back end or the front end go I just felt all of her start to slide and knew there was nothing I could do.
I'm ok but Betty a little worse for wear however it's all small stuff though, like tail light, clutch lever, gear shifter, indicator, instrument panel cover. Built like a tank is my Betty (not too disimilar to her owner). Some lovely chaps stopped and helped me and then a former work collegue that happened to be going South called the cops for me. 2 quite spunky cops came along and I got to sit in their car a while but then they had to go so I spent about 20 mins on the side of the raod in the pissing down rain waiting for the tow truck (which my man had organised). Paul_in_NZ had texted me as he had seen me after the event but was heading South also (thanks Paul). And another rider stopped to check I was ok.
I went to A&E to get checked out as my left shoulder is a little sore but it's just a bit of a strain and nothing is really painful.
Thanks to those who called me & texted me yesterday, it was a bit of a weird day as I went ono work b/c there was a court case I needed/wanted to attend and I had a fellow student coming in for a visit.
I finally had time last night to kinda get a bit upset, be grateful at how ok I am and realise how much worse it could've been.
For now it's back to public transport for a while, so thats gonna be fun going from Newtown to Porirua 4 days a week!
p.s Proctective riding gear works!!!

Wow. Good to hear you are ok. Was crappy yesterday morning eh? I hope you get your bike back soon so you can get out there on the road quickly.

Sorry to hear that. Good to hear you're ok though.
Some roads are unbelievably slippery in the rain, eh. On the last ride I was on, riding along a straight piece of road, the rear of the bike suddenly started fishtailing, sliding from side to side. If it had been on a corner, I'd have ended up sliding down the road too.

That's no good, Cathy! I'm glad to hear you're OK though.
Hope you and Betty get back to goodness really soon.

Damn those Weather Gods.
On the up side, before too long you'll have a whole new Betty if you keep replacing bits of her like this.

Doh that's unlucky. That corner up there can get pretty slick sometimes... Glad you're ok.

12th October 2005, 08:01
Argh! Cathie, what was all that about? That corner is a prick even on a fine day -- off camber, wind gusts, dickhead cagers realising they're in the wrong lane and baling out without indicating to avoid getting sucked into the Black Hole that is Johnsonville. It's good to know you're OK and that Betty is shaken but not stirred.

Bad luck CSL. That whole section of the m/way is pretty slippery when it gets wet. Must be all the diesel and crap dropped on the road by the HT boys.
What sort of tyres are you running on the CBRS? Perhaps it's time to get some better rubber (tyres!).
Anyway the main thing is you're ok, although that poor Honda must be wondering if you've got something against it.

Always terrible news to read on here. Thankfully you're not injured too badly and as most people will agree the bike is secondary to your health and can be fixed/replaced in time.
Keep your head up CSL, you'll be back on two wheels before you know it! :niceone:

Not good to hear, Cathy, but glad you are able to post about it and are not in worse shape. Take care of yourself and remember that the bike can be fixed/replaced, but YOU can't!

FANTASTIC NEWS CSL :niceone:
you are in one piece and betty has only cosmetic damage.
you could hardly hope for a better outcome except not to have slid at all
Ya might wanna check on the state of ya rim protectors just in case but it sounds like betty will be up and running in no time.

Sorry we could not get over to you Cathy...
We were stuck a couple of lanes away in rush hour traffic and on the wrong side of the motorway with no way of even changing lanes and 10mins late already...
I felt a right prick when we found out you actually fell off but when Em and I spotted the bike you were up and moving and parked by the side of the road so we thought you might have just run out of gas... (didn't see the slide)
Cheers

Yes agreed, that corner can be a bugger, I've felt the front give a few twitches in the wet there, so can sympathise.

Shit, bugger, I'm with Paul here, I feel like a prat too. I have a feeling I rode straight past you yesterday morning (until Fri I work in Jville!!). Just after 9ish? I don't know your bike, and since I was very late and you were standing and looking largely okay I figured you'd run outta gas too. Sorry.
That hill is bloody scary, any of those corners. I had a good slide this morning on the right hander before that one, but that was self-inflicted. Diesel from trucks, just a nightmare. I highly recommend the outside (fast) lanes - since that's the least likely lanes trucks have been dropping oil or diesel on.
Sorry mate, if I'd known you'd been for a slide I woulda stopped. Best of luck with the bumps and bruises (to the wallet too). Agree - the gear is worth it's weight in gold!!

Well apart from feeling sore I'm good and appreciate all your messages & offers of help. Cheers Cathy
was the traffic light?Yep, it always is heading North that time of the morning.
What sort of tyres are you running on the CBRS? Perhaps it's time to get some better rubber (tyres!).
I just got a new rear tyre a few weeks ago...I think it was just a wet day with a slippery road.
Glad you are OK, But I am wondering if somewhere there is a Betty doll with pins in it?
Starting to wonder that myself!
Sounds like you need some more bits off the old Rodent. PM me a complete list of broken bits and I'll check it against what's left in the gargre.
Will do ;) Thanks!
Sorry we could not get over to you Cathy...

Give us a yell if you want the bike picked up from the truck place/need a hand getting it back together.
Thanks, a hand when reassembling would be gratefully accepted. I'll let ya know when I have all the bits for Betty.

Thanks F5 Dave!!!

Where she is recovering & in a stable condition. She even got a sponge bath (well a $2 can of super cheap brand degreaser & a garden hose) & there was actually a bike under there.
Next the Physio & Mr Bump straightened the maligned bits. Dropped off the tail piece to be plastic welded last night so when I get all the bits back will be only a few min to sling them back on.

28th October 2005, 14:14
Well we’ve ended up with a new front tire to the list. I was tinkering & noticed the front tire was awfully bumpy. Now I’m not saying that this was the cause of the accident, it probably wasn’t, please don’t read this into it, but I’d be surprised if it didn’t feel somewhat bumpy riding along, which can’t be hugely good for traction.
I took a pic but have the wrong camera cable at work.
The good news is the distributor (who no longer distributes these) offered up a new tire of a better brand for really next to free, but suggested that it was delaminating & wouldn’t like to keep it in circulation. I won’t mention any brands or names, but just to say there are good people out there.
I'm getting the last of the bits shortly & it will be ready to go bar the plastic welding which may end up crossing fingers by end of weekend.
Ms Piggy
28th October 2005, 19:14
Dropped off the bits except I fogot the glass
Dave showed me the tyre, wow it looked weird! I can't thank you enough for all your help!!
ps. Thanks to Skunk as well who offered me the use of his little wee bike :2thumbsup
p.p.s :o about my dirty Betty.

31st October 2005, 09:18
Well she's pretty much back together but I need to pick up the tailpiece if it is finished & what to do about the sppedo glass.
PS: replaced the odd bulb that had fallen foul of the bang up. You'll of couse need to be carefull of the new tire for the first 200k as usual.

Ms Piggy
6th November 2005, 06:51
Well Betty is back in my arms  She doesn't have her seat at the moment so I have to organise to collect that from another very fabulous KBer.
I can't say enough how grateful I've been for all the help I've been given..."help" doesn't really describe what a few of you KB lads have done for me.
Bonez - turned up at my place with a whol lotta spare bits and expected nothing for them.
F5_DAve - did a whole lot of fixing, cleaning :o and sorting out of my bike...including sorting out a new front tyre cos the old one had a flaw, and he also took my tail peice over to another KBer for plastic welding and he picked my bike up from my mans place in Tawa and dropped it back at my place in Newtown! :2thumbsup
Pickle - plastic welded my tail peice & expects nothing for his time.
Skunk and Jim2 offered me bikes as loaners until Betty was up and running.
I owe you all BIG TIME, when I'm a rich social worker (although as Tui says....yeah right) I'll need to have a BIG party and invite along all the fab KBers who have assisted me so willingly....so keep a space in your diary for Jan 2007!!
Hey MSTRS I may be able to get those lovely stickers on now!

Hi Cathy
Sorry to hear that your Betty took a slide and am glad that you came out out okay.
It sounds as though the KB community in Wellington are fantastic!!! The level of support is simply WOW!
Give Betty a stern speaking too after she has finished her hospital stay and tell her never to do that to you again!!! Sometimes a bit of discipline is necessary! lol
I sold my Betty yesterday (Yes that was my Bike's name too...I named her after the red bike that Betty Boop rides :-)). She was naughty on occasion too.
Take care, I'm glad that everything is working out okay
