Hi, as the title states I'm after a farm bike that can also be used for other things.
Primarily as a fully road registerable bike that can be ridden by someone on a learners motorcycle licence. Me and my dad will be using the bike up at the farm in the weekends to do odd jobs and also have a bit of fun in the dirt. Weekdays it'll come back down to Auckland to use as a commuter.
Ideally we're aiming for something that can do 80kmph comfortably so it can be used on the motorway, can cruise around a farm and is easy to learn to maintain.

Thanks
Jasper

A honda would be the best bet. There are a Portuguese brand for sale which seems quite good.

1982 XR200. Fuck everything else.

Hmmmm it's 2018 - looks like you need a 190 now days https://www.hondamotorbikes.co.nz/farm-off-road-bike/xr190

Why two wheels - Farmers are softer than they were 30-40 years back and rely on computers and automated farming - ie - sit on their arses more. Thus they love the 4 wheel bikes.

Progress is not always good.

The new government will not fix this.

My neighbours farm where they milk 1000+ cows, all the boys ride tf125's. No quads to be seen, apparently they are becoming less acceptable...

80km/hr on the motorway? Good luck with that.

As much as I loved my TF125, bugger that for what you’ve described. DR650, FTW!

Dude out our way is a relieving farm manager. He looks after peoples farms when they are away.

He has a BMW F800GSA. 150000 km on it, and it looks like it's been through a mincer. It just gets hammered, and it keeps on going.

I think a CT110 is a good bet too, though they are dear. I understand NZ Post pays $7500 for the ones they get, along with all the panniers, racks etc.

Just get something simple, that you can treat like shit, and it'll just keep going.

tf are sikk on farms. dont knw about road.

ts 185 wil go dual. and do sikk wheelies. longer suspension travel, taller stance so less comfy if doing time but easy manageable.

Lolz..... That Busa.....

Get a CRF. DR or WR 2fiddly. Mebbes a Djebbel or summit similar in green. A good XR 250.. Ooh look, I stood in some rocking horse poo.
Farm bikes are ok on farms, that's where they should stay. A leccy foot and kickstart will save loads of grief.
Back in the day, TY 175 2t Yamahas were the steed of choice on UK hill farms unless the snow was too deep and the horse had to be saddled up.
No, you won't find one.
Also, work or play? Will you have a dog on the rack or wheelie at every opportunity?

KL250 Stockman  for a straight out farm bike or if you can find one a KL250 Super Sherpa both will run circles around mudbugs, Ags, & Trojans and 10x more durable than the bloody poxy Brazilian built XR150s & 190s

stockman are hard if not impossible to make road legal as they are not registered with LTSA when imported,

if you could find a super sherpa and put the stockman racks on them then it would be perfect,

you could look at a KLX150, but maybe a bit small for open road use, but does come road ready and with a farm kit, all for under 5k new

Isn't impossible to get a stockman on the road, just awkward sorting a few minor details out.... over a couple of years one of our customers ended up with a fleet of them for their farms of which at least 4 of the bikes were legalised for road use and used to herd stock between farms and we also did one for a professional pest controller who worked on multiple high country stations around the canterbury foothills (that's why I did say a straight out farm bike and Scott you'll remember who I was working for and that our bread & butter were supplying the agricultural sector...we weren't at the sharp end of Kawasaki dealerships in NZ & #1 south island for total new vehicle sales for no reason ;) )

A Super Sherpa would be perfect but another bit of dumbfuckery by KHI to drop them in 2010

Both bikes were nigh on 30hp & good for 130km/h-ish flat-out

the last one we got through was a nightmare (thats why i think it still is a possibility, and it may depend on the person doing it at the testing station as if they dont want to help you its even harder)

but the owner did get it through, and that was over 10 years ago now, if its not on the system now they are hard to get through LTSA,

they got dropped because they didnt sell in big enough numbers, i am surprised that NZ and Aussie sell enough stockmans to keep them going as well, by far the best farm bike there, but you pay more at the start,

FOr what he wants - farm use and motorway, the KLR may be the best suggestion.

XTZ125 is a good option, though won't hold 100kph -- doesnt stop me commuting on the south western --- can definitely take a licking and keep on ticking --- a more farm version has more racks and a shitter front brake if thats what you need (costs ~1K more too lol)

Had a mate with one of those back in the early 70's - really sounded like a power saw, a sound at the time not heard since the Jawas and CZs of the 60's.

Had some great adventures.

Here it is stirring up the snow on the Summit Road above Akaroa in 1974:

It's a option!

I wonder if Suzuki will carry it for another year - long in the tooth now, must be due to be dumped or revised.

don't see why not, they chuck knobblies on the gn125 down these ways for all the philipino workers.

quads are less in favour these days because fuckwits cant ride them so they crash, they are also expensive to maintain because staff thrash them unless they are governed. using the screw on the throttle i governed all my quads to 40km/hr and halved my repair bills, then stuck all the staff on 125s and halved the bills again, they had a bike supplied each and had to answer to any damage, surprising how the riding changed.

as for OP, as a young fella i had a xr250 which was my only transport and used on the farm as well but the speed limit was only 80km/hr but i still got numerous speeding tickets on it and never one in town for speeding tho the mongrel mot in our town made me push my bike because i had broken the mirror and i even had the effen mirror strapped to the carrier, he was a prick tho.

personally wouldn't go less than 250 and there are numerous options out there in those ranges

 there's more of those GNs sold locally for the import workers than anything else, the corrosion resistance isn't to good though....cow shit eats the buggery out of them in no time (actually quicker than it eats the Ags & TFs).
Quads though mmm city-slicker motorcycle shops have no idea at the abuse & mistreatment that the rural shops have to deal with and repair... you get to see the whole spectrum of neglect.

But in all seriousness the OP should look at the likes of the current XT250 yamaha & DRZ250 to cover all their wants

Akzle you should get yourself a Rokon trailblazer :msn-wink:

With all the throw away plastic -bale wrap and seas of shopping bags about its a wonder a recycled plastic framed cow farm bike hasn't been invented.
