Hello,

I was wondering if the suzuki RV50 can be classed as a moped. Or is it classed as a motorcycle? The engine doesn't exceed 50cc and hasnt been registered in new zealand.

Thanks.

There are a few other conditions before it is allowed to be classed as a moped.

Do you know what those conditions could be?

Thanks.

Thanks.clearly explained on the ltsa website. My sister had a Suzi fatwheel RV50 in the late 70s, a pussy but not to be underestimated, both the rv50 and my sister.

I have talked to other rv50 owners and they have their rv registered as a moped. Could this be because they registered/vinned it 30+ years ago?

The people you'll have to talk to are NZTA.

Why the problem if it's registered as a motorcycle?

1. It will cost more for vin, rego, registration and wof.
2. I will require indicators, mirrors and more safety features.
3. You need a motorcycle license, having a drivers license only required is more friendly to the market.

If I could make it a moped, its a steal. If it is classed as a motorcycle more $$$$$

Is it capable of traveling faster than 50 km/hr ... ??? ... this is the clincher question ...

But ... have you taken it to VTNZ ... filled out the forms ... paid the testing fee ... got a pass/fail result ... ???

Try ... what could possibly go wrong ... ???

It's a can of worms Bro. Put it to bed.

The clue is in the name. Mo-Ped, Short for motor-pedals. Does it have a motor & pedals? If not then it's not a Moped.
it's not a powered bicycle, it's a motorbike. Get over it.

Not actually correct. A moped needs to be 50cc or less, and not be capable of exceeding 50kph, and have no more than 2kw of power.

Well they need to think up a new name. Moped is already taken by motor/pedal combo machines. :msn-wink:

Absolutely agree - the French made thousands of the things...

Unfortunately NZTA use "AB (power-assisted pedal cycle)" for what sidecar bob calls a "mo-ped" and the expression "moped" for what Crasher describes - under 50cc, under 50km/h under 2kw...

Like you sidecar bob I consider a 50cc twist-and-go a motorcycle and that you should have a motorcycle licence to ride it. As for the thinking behind the Yamaha Tricity being registered as a car... Makes one wonder if the whole registration/licencing of small powered two/three wheelers needs to be re-evaluated...

Read the "moped" section of this: Mopeds (classes LA and LB) (https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/vehicle-types/motorcycles-and-mopeds/#Classes-LA-and-LB)

...I have a 60 Series Landcruiser...I'm fucked off with the costs involved in rego and shit...can I register it as a moped?...I can't seem to find the relevant clauses that would allow me to do this...

Only if you can add pedals to it to make it go faster...

Couldn't agree more. It's a fucking stupid name, and the cunting things should need reg wof checks.
