I just bought a GN 250 (1984) for some fun. It needed a little bit of a re wiring, no problems there. But when I push the go button, I can hear the starter motor running, but the engine doesn't turn over. It did turn over a couple of times but resorted back to nothing.
I don't have a manual and wondered if anyone out there has had a problem like this before on any bike ( I'm sure this is a generic type fault).
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

i have a mate in welly with an older gn, he had a similar problem. he said the starter teeth were worn out and he fitted a new starter motor from the wrekers for about 10 bucks and the problem was solved. :niceone:

If you can hear the starter motor spinning and the engine isn't turning over, then it sounds like a starter clutch problem. My memory is bad but i think the starter clutch ( a big one-way bearing ) is behind the flywheel in the left side crank case cover.

just to clear up what you are saying.
The startr motor makes a whirring sound and doesnt make the motor turn over or -the starter turns the motor over but then stops ??
if its the first -Id bung a new starter clutch i --behind left hand side cover --if its the latter id first try connecting up some jumper leads and see if it turns over then

Email me and I'll send you a copy of as much of the manual as I have scanned.
From a 1984 manual too
