Well, you know how I told you she bought a new bike, well she dropped it :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:

not really any speed, just forgot to put the side stand down, before dismounting.......

Had to spend at least an hour telling her it was ok , that we had all done it......

Hope it doesnt put her off................She was doing so well.

It happens to the best of us. Look on the bright side, she will NEVER, EVER forget to put her stand down again. It may even stop her from making the fatal mistake of leaving it down..............

That is an utterly normal learning event and one reason why an unfaired bike is a good idea for a noobie. Sorry.

Tell her not to sweat it from me and no way do I think she's stupid.

We have indeed, all done it.

Every biker is intitled to at least one dumb incident without too much ribbing. Consider part of the intiation process!
Mine... I lowsided on the side of a hill while being distracted by another rider. Both bike and me ended up flat down on the road.
I looked at all the gas coming up and thought F**K that's $5 of gas that I'm losing so I jumped up and picked the bike up. The challenge was to stop it going over on the other side because of all the adrenlian I had pumping.
One red face and no other injuries to me or the bike later, I P***ed myself laughing, got back on and enjoyed the rest of the day riding.

Sweet! I was christened as being a real rider that day!

never has a road been more aptly named ,unless you want to peddle a quad or paris-dakar FORGET IT .
I ride an Aprillia rsv & live near Taumaranui , if youd like a major rave on it
drop me a line . it was the best test of my riding skills i've had in a decade.

Can't say I've ever dropped a bike... had it lean pretty far a couple of times, but at 6'4" and 130kgs I can hold it fairly solid until about 30-40degrees from vertical.

Must admit the kill switch for leaving the side stand down is invaluable on my bike, still havn't got used to knocking the side stand up, and takes me at least two cut-outs to remember the bloody thing is still down!

Less than a year ago I dropped my VTR250 in front of my CBTA class and instructor... that was a great start of a day I tell u.

And then dropping my SV650S on the 2nd day I have it while looking up at the wind farms.

Feel better?

Bugger. That's biking life for ya. Just when you think you have it all sorted, you forget the daftest of things. Onwards and upwards, and I hope your good lady brushes this hiccup off as a mere 'experience' and continues to enjoy the many joys of motormacycling for years to come.

hmm, I can come off in corners fine, but haven't managed to simply let it fall over. Touch wood.

Then again, if I'm sitting on it, it can't just fall over, 6"3 I'm just about sitting on a normal chair. Have almost fallen over from not putting my feet down, but that's because I was having fun seeing how slow I could go balancing, then I was seeing if I could balance when stopped as well.

Knowing my luck, my next bike will probably fall over, being more expensive and pretty... :crybaby:

Everyone has done it at one stage or another. Wether they want to admit it or not. She will get over it and start riding again, but you need to give her all the encouragement she needs.

You're probably right there. I Think its because of the strength thing. I have 21 years experience on roadbikes and dropped my bike at the gas station just last Saturday. But in all honesty I avoided hitting a car and my steering head bearing is stuffed. The bike got to the point of no return and I couldnt turn the bars to hold it up and over we went. Only damage was to my pride as it was right in front of my Rossi. :slap: and he had to help me pick it up.

Jeez, I saw some footage a few weeks back of a GP racer dropping his bike while just sitting on it and nearly stationary. Silly shit can happen to anyone. It's how we learn.

my favorite trick is to pull the clutch in (while still in first), put the stand down, lean the bike onto the stand, then let the clutch out. the kill switch kills the engine, but not before the bike jumps forward enough to break the over centre on the stand, and lose balance. i think i posted photos of my effort to save the bike from the garge floor...(which i did, at the expense of some skin)

Please thank your woman for me.

I've never done the stand trick - my efforts were far more spectacular! When learning to ride I would try to flick my bike into neutral as I approached a red light, but once or twice I was concentrating so hard on finding neutral (which wasn't that easy on the RG150) that I completely forgot to put either foot down and the bike just fell over, taking me with it! I also dropped the bike once when the rider in front of me stopped just around a corner - put my foot down and found a deep pothole. Thankfully the bike landed on my flabby thighs so no damage other than to my leg and pride!

Tell her EVERYONE does dumb things at some stage in their riding life and now she's done it, she can move on!

Not me. The only stupid thing I did with the NTV650, was when I was putting it on the centre stand. There was a wall behind and I didn't leave enuf clearance. :argh:

I dont think its a strength thing... for most people if a bike is going down, its going down...

Here's my 19yo male thought on why I reckon it happens more to females... They are thinking to much about whats around them when they stop, is it safe to stop, have I turned everything off... good way to miss something... like the side stand.

I think guys are less prone to it because they just stop... don't care as much whats around or who they are blocking...

Only my young minded theory btw

Bugger.
Had a stand completely break in two once on the farm. not so cool to pick up with all the work gear piled up on it. Almost had me a hernia! :argh:

Well I have never forgotten to put my sidestand down, but in saying that I'll probably do it now. After 21 years I think I can safely say I dont really have to think about turning things off or if its safe to stop etc, pretty much automatic now. Easy enough to do when you are learning to ride though, when you're all nervous and anxious.
I have seen plenty of men drop their bike at zero kph....shouldn't laugh but sometimes its funny. :devil2:

Um, this prompts me to ask a question.

I've never dropped a bike forgetting to put the side stand down. (dropped 'em on cambers doing the "foot out , oh shit where's the ground gone" thing, and taking them off side and centre stand, and various other ways. Just not forgetting to put the side stand down).

That's because I always stop, put foot down, climb off bike, stand beside it holding the bike, THEN put the stand out and lean the bike onto it. Always have. Hard to forget the stand in this method, cos you're standing beside the bike, holding it and very aware of the weight.

But I've seen other people put the side stand out while still sitting on the bike. then lean the bike onto the stand, still sitting on it , THEN get off.

Am I unusual ?

the only time my SV650 has ever been other than vertical was when I kicked the stand when sitting on the bike, and it went to vertical but didnt over center.... stepped off the bike and took two steps and CRASH behind me as it tipped over. Crap.

outside work to so as to maximise the embarrassment factor.

new clutch lever, handle bars, indicator and gark in the GIVI fairing and handlebar weight. LUCKILY it didnt ding the tank or tailpeice.

curse these short legs and high seats.

SV650 for sale by the way :)
