Just reading about CBTA and wondering how much longer we would be piloting it here in NZ and I found this about the Aussie one. Apparently the likelyhood of people who pass cbta crashing is the same as someone who just does the test (But usually has more experience as they have to wait longer)

Competency-based Assessment

South Australia has introduced a competency-based training and assessment (CBTA) system. The South Australian system is a multi-session cumulative assessment programme administered by approved commercial driving instructors, which drivers can elect to undertake instead of sitting a one-off test administered by testing officers or commercial driving instructors. Evaluation suggests little difference in post-assessment crash risk between graduates of CBTA and of one-off tests. CBTA is popular with South Australian learner drivers, with around 66% of drivers opting for this form of assessment instead of the one-off test - despite the CBTA being more expensive.
