Hi all , new member and first post.
My boys aged 9 and 11 have always wanted dirt bikes. I'm almost 50 and biked last when in my twenties. I'm pretty keen to get one myself if it takes off with the boys.
Last Saturday I took the plunge and now the boys will be getting their bikes and gear this coming Saturday.

Question:
I'm loathe to take them somewhere on their first time that is high pressure and hard terrain. Bike , helmet, gloves and boots its going to be a lot to handle.
I'm based in Rodney so my options will be Sandpit or Muriwai beach.

Can anyone recommend somewhere else that may be forgiving ?

For now the boys only want to trail ride but who knows , maybe the MX style will bite.

Cheers All!

there is not many other options up your way unless you know someone with a paddock,

What Scott said, but sand is hard to learn on. Actually, sand is just hard...

Waitemata MCC run taril rides in the forest, which are a lot easier as the tracks aren't so cut up. There are a few different levels of track to try out, from a pee-wee oval to a green beginners to not-too-hard yellows. They get a bit harder and longer each time you move up, so remember not to let tired people ride bikes. And leave the reds til next time!

This is probably the easiest way to find a place to ride. Have a look at WMCC http://www.waitematamcc.co.nz/ and see when they're up next.

Good luck!

Keep an eye on here, http://silverbullet.co.nz/events.php

The farm rides are excellent and often have a kids track.

The downside to sand is that it does "Get in" ... and sticks to grease/oil where ever it is ... and it becomes grinding paste. Axles, chains, air filters, and throttle/clutch/brake/speedo etc cables if they are damaged. Check the air filter is fitting correctly and has no holes even fine sand can get through. Sand in the bore can ruin your day.

Keep an eye on the papers/internet's for organised trail rides. Many clubs run them for their fundraiser. Most have rides for different age/skill levels ...

If you fancy a weekend away there is always The Farm (http://www.thefarm.co.nz/), oop north. Exceedingly back to basics accommodation or BYO, bring a tent or caravan.

Lots of riding for the kids and a great place to train, have a BBQ and do some fishing or horse riding.

During the summer there are a lot of families turn up for short holidays or weekends and have a great time.

It's great, though be aware it's clay base, so this time of year it's slippery enough.
