View Full Version : Ride Forever course - Silver or Gold?

There's a few free course promotions at the moment, so thought I'd sign up for one. The main question I have is whether to do the Silver or Gold? I started riding again in 2010 but (foolishly) didn't do any training at the time. I'm now riding about 10,000 km a year.
Also, any recommendations on where to do the course? I live in central Auckland, so there's a good choice of locations I can get to fairly easily.

They have a graduated system, you’ll probably have to start at bronze
I’ve done all 3, there’s lots of practical learning and there decent way to spend the day on the bike

Good for some, but they wouldn’t let me do the silver before I did the bronze, I ride daily. Race some weekends.

Really? that's a bit stink. I guess some riders don't even know the basic techniques so the instructors want people to do all the courses regardless of experience.

Also applied to do Silver with Prorider and then they asked if I did Bronze before. Have done Urban, Bronze and Silver before with Passmasters in Takanini area but then wanted to do Silver again as the Silver done earlier in February was a disaster in some ways as it was extremely wet. It rained so hard that we stopped many times trying to find shelter.
Excellent courses though and looking forward to do Gold next.
Enjoy :lol::cool:

Whilst riders with reasonable experience can join IAM and really benefit from it, it's noticeable that those who have progressed through the Ride Forever programme first find progress to the Roadcraft Advanced Test a little easier to take on board. Of course, there's nothing to stop a rider doing both.

Or to take that one step further, seeing as the Rideforever courses are based on Roadcraft, think of the Rideforever stuff as the prep-work for IAM. A decent rider who has done one or two Gold courses will breeze thru the IAM version of Roadcraft in short order, whereas if you've not done any Rideforever courses it'll be a much longer process. Every day is a school day

Another option whilst more expensive than Ride Forever is a 1 day, 1:1 advanced riding course with Philip McDaid out in west Auckland. He will assess and tailor the coaching to your specific needs. He's a remarkable guy and quite a few people on KB will attest to that. Link: http://www.riderskills.co.nz/default.asp?pageref=advancedroadcraft&rightbar=ADVNews

I'm off to Pukekohe on Wednesday to do the silver course with Passmasters. They want us to wear earphones though, not sure how that will go as I've never worn them on a bike.
Might have to fit the quiet exhaust to the R1!

I did a silver with them the other year. Well worth the time and effort - reinforced those things you are doing well and reminds you of those you need to practise... always worth having someone critique your riding...
plus it's a day out of town on the bike

They supply the "earphones"-actually small buds that will fit you easily-need these as the instructor will talk to you as you ride along.

I'm pretty relaxed about most things but I'm not sure how I'll go with earphones while riding!

You will quickly have more other things to concentrate on than be concerned about the earphones
I have done a few courses with Passmasters already, Paul, Brian and Chris
You will learn a lot and relax and have fun:eek:

It was a good day, ended up being just me on the course. Nice ride to Huntly and back from Pukekohe, and a fine day despite the shitty looking weather when I rode out there in the morning.
Some Important Stuff - coffee at Pukekohe Maccas is shit, and the best place for a feed in Huntly is still the KFC.

Star and Protecta will refund part or all of the course fee, and Star will halve your excess for 12 months after the course. Other insurers may also do something similar.

If you get insurance discounts for training, there should be benefits in being a member of the Advanced Motorists, right?

Well, my insurer gave me a discount for the Advanced Test pass and another when I passed my Observer Test. Unfortunately, they only applied for the year of the passes. Your biggest benefit is being a better rider :innocent:

I can't imagine protecta offering anything these days. It's like pulling teeth no matter how obvious it is you weren't in the wrong. They used to be about bikers. Not anymore.

Protecta did offer to pay the cost of one Ride Forever course per year (max $50).
Star give you 50% of the cost back up to $30 and halve your excess - you can submit this once per year - so you just have to do one course every year to keep up with it.
I saved $500 (reduction in excess) by doing a course that was a freebie (through a RF promo). Best $0 I ever spent.

My course instructor said that the Rideforever courses will become part of the licensing system in about 2 years. I don't know what that will mean for costs or content, but it might pay to do the courses sooner rather than later if you're thinking about it.

I'm surprised that's not the case already to be honest. It'll help for sure.
If you enjoyed your day on the Ride Forever course then I can recommend doing your IAM advanced test too. You'll be doing your lovely machine justice by being a better rider - Not necessarily faster mind but better all round. A good bunch of people too who love their riding and want to help others improve too. Give Blackbird a PM if you want to know more or check out the IAM website. :ride:

Thanks for the suggestion. I will probably do another Ride Forever course after Christmas, then look into IAM.

When CBTA / Ride Forever was set up, the thought is that it would totally replace the old system. But that would be reliant upon everyone having access to a Ride Forever trainer, who is CBTA qualified.
They aren't thick on the ground outside of the main populated areas.
Out of interest, I'm a Ride Forever trainer who is CBTA qualified, and I have a full time job doing something else.

Whose in charge of making the promo vids for this outfit depicting bad riding as good. EVERYTIME this crap comes up in FB ads I’m left wondering what they are smoking at Ride forever.
The latest garbage shows a group ride and advocates a staggered formation.... which is NEVER needed if you are following at a safe distance (I recommend 4 sec min)....in their vid the second bike is hard left primed to snot a sheep running out of grass scared by first bike...
They then go on to say ride single file through corner, once again irrelevant if a proper following distance is observed.... which in the short ad looks to be only one second!!!!
Awhile ago they had an add showing gravel from a farm driveway creeping out onto a rural Rd. Really you shouldn’t be on a bike at all if your not expecting that as everyday hazard.
Oh well nice to see how ACC is wasting my rego fees while grass verges go unmoved again
