Well at that pace they hardly need a speed rating anyway...:devil2:

Well for starters we don't run 11R's on anything anymore, as far as I'm aware. Most of the rubber is rated L which translates to 120 km/h and some of new size super singles are rated M which is 130 km/h. Moot point since we're limited at 90 km/h. Oh, and all clean skins by Mr Bridgestone.

Was watching a vid on EweChoob recently...
A few chaps were on rented scroters in Africaland, on a dirt road full of potholes.
These guys were doing "OK" I guess until a downhill part, where they got passed by a local chap on a pushbike.
I had to laugh when the psychlist was filmed cradling a live, large chicken in his left arm.
Awesome skills taking dinner home to the family!

He reckoned the scariest thing was descending European alps in the Peloton with 300 ex pro cyclists at warp factor 5 with these guys literally cm away and him just praying please don't let me fuck this up....
Having just graduated to semi road bikes and riding feckin miles on mountain bikes now... You get all the thrills and scares without the tickets...

I had a nosey while getting some bits for my mountain bike awhile ago... they do have "not for highway use" stamped on the sidewalls....
So take a note of that and some photos if your ever in an accident involving one of these boy racer cyclists. A few pics of the sidewalls, the pedals without any reflectors and no front or rear reflectors and should end any court case pretty quick...
Also if its part of an event id be having the organisors under OSH. Doesn't matter that its a tradition to be unprotected, racing cars used to have no fireproof suits or neck braces etc but they upped their game
Just watch out for this new fad.... riding around with no brakes is apparently a cool thing....

Sounds like that particular twat got what he earned.
Fixies - and guys bombing downhill streets like say Wellington's The Terrace on longboards - it's been happening for a while. That and drift trikes for suburban downhills. Not much chance of stopping safely on any of them in an emergency situation but then again the risk is most of the point. It's just young guys proving themselves, that's nothing new and it's not going to go away.
E-bikes are starting to be a bit more common downtown but they're being ridden by long-term commuters, they tend to be a lot more considerate.

The "Not for highway use" may just be there to stop the manufacturer being sued in the US of A. It could well be completely be completely meaningless here. Cycle tyres are not manufactured specifically for this market.
I just took a look at pedals on a major cycling retail website. Very few road bike pedals have reflectors. Most clip-in pedals have nowhere to put them anyway.
Fixed wheel bikes have been around forever.
By all means take your photos, the court case may well be over quickly but not necessarily how you expect.
Bugga! Got sidetracked. Was going to mention that some years back the cops here had a blitz on bikes and scooters, and after checking licence and rego they delivered a lecture on appropriate riding gear. So I'm sitting there on my moped, fully dressed but not specifically motorcycle dressed, getting a lecture about riding gear while cyclists are riding past with no protective gear but their helmet. And some of them go the same speed as a moped in places.
I guess expecting logic is a bit unrealistic.

Someone told me the other day that there were plans to change the rules for E-bikes, moving away from the simple <600W rule to a requirement to have no hand throttle, simply a power assist function. All sounds very killjoy.

Someone I know recently imported a 1kw hub/wheel assembly, battery, controller and instrument display through AliExpress. Cost just over NZ1,000 inc freight. He's put it in his old mountain bike. How is officialdom going to deal with this? Short of stopping all imports, I can't see how it can be controlled.

A throttle is the clear definition of difference between a bicycle and a scooter. Most sold here are the 300w standard as used in the EU. And assistance up to 32kph.
And there are shit tons being sold.

I cant see how you would control a 1kw motor on a standard mtb either. It will pull itself apart.

The wife's is both, you set what assist you want but you have to pedal to get it, but the LH half-grip throttle over-rides that. I've seen a lot like that.
Removing the throttle option sound very like the sort of PC bullshit the various green lobby groups indulge in. Like, "if you don't HAVE to pedal then it must be an evel motorcycle and must be banned.

By the usual methods ... A ticket from a nice Police officer.
The rules ...
1. there is no speed limit other than the limit posted on the road
2. power is limited to 300W
3. most places you can ride a MTB are considered roads (anywhere public have access)
https://electricbikesnz.com/2016/08/17/what-are-the-e-bike-laws-in-nz/
Ride it on the road and you may get charged under the moped rules (if it is capable of more than 50 km/hr)
Exceeding that on the road will probably mean much more serious (expensive) charges.

It's the model developed for NZ Post, so you'd fucking hope it was road legal.
Because she wants the exercise, but most of the rides she does from home, (so not having to load the bike up onto the SUV) are longer than she's comfortable doing or involve sections she can only ride with a little help. Like, if she rides the length of the Hutt valley to visit friends and the wind picks up before she returns then she doesn't end up walking 20k home.

Can't miss a chance to set up some committee to look into it then drag out a new tax.
Filling up the car for the week ahead this afternoon I notice it's gone up again - $2.33 a liter for 95 :weird: I may need to park up the XR6 soon and take the lads wee 1986 Ford Laser - it's cheaper to run.
On that subject, I sat in the passenger seat some weeks back while my daughter drove back to Dunedin. She has a 1999 Toyota Corolla 1.8 auto. Darn thing got smack on 6.0 l per 100 kms on that trip.

I've been looking very carefully at them myself. I have a decent commuter bike and have been going down the mid-drive Bafang BB02 route with a 48V battery.... yes it will be more than 300W, and no I'm not too stressed about it.
Drove my first electric car a couple weeks back too. It was great. Perfect as a town car... so much so that I am seriously considering one.

Cool! My mate said that he got a peak top speed of 45 km/hr on the flat from his yesterday. It would hardly attract unwanted attention, especially where we live 😁.
At the last IAM conference, I got to ride a Scott electric pedal-assist bike which was really impressive. Also drove a Nissan Leaf and the Renault equivalent. It was the torque off the line which impressed the heck out of me. One of the Wellington members has a Tesla. It's hellishly expensive but has serious performance and range, despite the odd bit of adverse press.
