A group of riders from the Waikato are touring the South Island again in February or March next year. I would appreciate ideas for the trip:
1. Best roads / routes. Prefer between 250 - 400 km per day. Love 70 kph - 100 kph sweepers! No gravel.
2. Best stops, hotels etc. Criteria: Affordable, comfortable, tidy, biker friendly. Walking distance to a pub.
All thoughts much appreciated!

Starting in Picton? Queen Charlotte drive to Nelson - carry on to West Coast. Down the coast to haast Pass, Wanaka, Crown Range, Queenstown, Down to Invercargill, Caitlins back to Dunedin for the best bits, east coast is pretty straight, boring and cop crowded. Plenty of good inland routes back to picton though

Starting in Picton? Queen Charlotte drive to Nelson -thru to Murcheson-Upper and lower Buller to Westport. Go up West Coast to Kumara. Retrace ride down Punikaikai coast- carry on down Glacier Hyway . Down the coast to haast Pass, Wanaka, Crown Range, Queenstown, Down towards Invercargill, turn towards Te Anau and Milford sound. Return the west route through Nightcaps, thru Invercargill then Caitlins back to main SH1, turn off up towards Roxbourgh, Alexandra , Clyde, Cromwell and through the Lindis pass, Mckenzie country to Fairlie, then Geraldine. Drop into Canturbury plains and use the scenic inland route to bypass ChCh or go to ChCh and Akaroa, and off up the east coast to Picton. Enjoy
A few more suggestions.

If you are going down the west coast (and you will if you pick a route with those criteria) stop with the good folks at the BeachView Motel in Rapahoe. Brilliant. Owners are riders. Walk along the beach to the local for a good feed and a few cold ones. Of all the passes do the Arthur’s without fail. Time it so you can make stops to just be gobsmacked by the views. You are welcome

I'd recommend stopping in Blackball on the West Coast too. Use the Formerly the Blackball Hilton. It is a pub as well as being an hotel too :2thumbsup
