Julian Ryder has commented on Twitter to say that Ronnie Moore has passed away. I hadn't seen or heard anything in the local news. Moore was one of the riders from New Zealand's golden age of speedway, twice World Champion and a world pairs champion with Ivan Mauger.

I saw him ride at the Aranui speedway way back when.

Ronnie was probably the most naturally talented speedway rider we've ever produced. On his night, no one could match him.

He followed his father Les into car racing and could have made another career there if he'd wanted to.

Post his major accident, he found a lot of satisfaction assisting and training the juniors.

He will be missed.

I first saw Ronnie at the A&P show at Trentham memorial park must have been early '60s. He and another guy were running the Wall of Death. Had a large brit twin on rollers outside to get peoples attention, pretty sure the WoD bikes were bantams or similar - really loud two strokes (not expansion chamber-sort of noise, more like open pipe or even megaphone.) The climax of the show was the two of them riding in opposite directions, one high and one low then crossing over. Wasn't a very large diameter ring, so the timing had to be absolutely correct. No safety helmets of course, just a leather flying jacket and a fag in his lips. Impressed the hell out of a 10'ish year old, and the start of a long love of bikes.

He always had a dream to see another kiwi holding the world cup...

In the late 80s he did get 2 of his young riders, Mark Lyndon & Mark Thorpe into the British league
but they were unable to carry on the dream for him....

His passing is going to be a big blow for speedway in chch and NZ ....

you would have to go along way to find a nicer guy than Ronnie....

I hope Moore Park keeps going.....

I thought the complete lack of press coverage was remarkable but finally there was a clip on the TV1 news last night.

And pleased to see Briggo looks much the same. Larry Ross, though... he looks way older than I remember him as.
