I was unable to attend the preview screening (which Wayne attended and which had a Q & A session) a couple of weeks ago, but I will be making an effort to see this.

PS go see the Spitfire documentary as well.

Looks like a good movie to go and see.

Also, "Hurricane" is on the schedule, portraying the Polish 303 squadron in the BoB.

I've enjoyed all of Martin's programmes. Spitfire, Tank, The Boat that Guy Built, Our Guy in China/India, How Britain Worked, Speed, they're all good!

I'll have to see if anyone where I am is screening the Gardner doco!

I have seen that and it is good.

I basically have to go to the UK to see the battle of britain flight. There's a Lancaster in the shed where they keep the Spitfires. A Lancaster!

That one has been there for ever.
I remember a story that they rebuilt the engines and someone started one or more of them before oil was added.

I went to the Madras Oregon Airshow a couple of weeks ago and they had not one but 2 P51 Mustangs ripping around. Really very cool.

An uncle did, I think 12 missions as tail gunner on a Lancaster, (short bastard).

Don't think it was a record, but I believe the average missions survived was less than three.

Yes there is a Lanc at Motat. Sometimes you can crawl through it.

Random thing, my first boss was an RAF flight engineer on Lancs. They pretty much never slept, only time they had for sleep was when the aircraft were in the air. Then they were shit scared something they did failed so didnt sleep well. From memory he lost 5 crews.

Ive recently been up in a Spit. They are not kidding when they say you wear them. Very cool aircraft with stunning power.

Be like a Harley compared with new shit surely. Sound ace though.

You come away from the Wanaka air show with sore ears ;)

Well I dont make a habit of going for flights in fighters so my experience is limited to the Spit. You feel everything, you hear everything and you get a faceful of fuel each time it comes on power. Ive done some flying but this was next level for me. Direction change was amazing.

Most definitely not a harley, more like a Britton. :2thumbsup

In 2016 we went to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Conningsby (Lincolnshire) and took the tour through the hangar. At the time, their Lancaster was undergoing maintenance and was not in flyable condition, but we did see a stunning 15-minute Spitfire handling display over the airfield.

Last year, we attended the International Tattoo at RAF Fairford, and one of the highlights of the day was seeing the Lancaster in action, and in formation with four Spitfires - 8 V-12 engines together! There're only two (flyable) Lancasters in the world, with the other being in Canada.

cool!!

I didnt know there was a Lancaster at Motat so will make the trip next time I am in Orklind.

Another thing I didnt know (its a loooong list) is that there is a Spitfire in the Orklind museum. We had some time to kill last trip and decided to go for a looksee and I "found" it up on the second floor.

I was interested to read about Spitfires that the first few marks were much more manouverable than the later, higher powered versions because the Griffon engine was so much heavier than the Merlin. The happy medium seems to me to be the supercharged ones. Forced induction FTW on any piston engine!

Um, you have been to the Wigram museum aincha?

https://www.airforcemuseum.co.nz/aircraft/supermarine-spitfire-lf-mk-xvie/

The superchargers were two speed. Goosing the mechanically driven blower in the lower pressure at altitude gave them lots more height to contend with German planes that had been hammering them from much higher altitude.

They originally supplied those engines to the yanks, who were similarly disadvantaged. The yanks eventually made their own, somewhat better made version.

i've been playing a game called War Thunder, which is a (kind of) WWII-Korean war Sim. It started with just planes, but there is now tanks and boats. I was raised up on biggles books and reading about fighter aces and so on - one of my earliest memories is watching the movie, the battle of midway, with my dad when I was a kid. The beginning sequence with the mosquito coming over and dropping a bomb is etched in my memory - so I really enjoy flying (well, with a mouse and keyboard) in a battle with Mosquitos, spitfires, hurricanes, Bf109s, FW190's, Lancasters, wellingtons, and even such things as venoms, meteors, migs and some experimental planes.

You soon learn how terrifying it must have been, and how hard, even though its just a game. Flying a 109F vs a MkV Spit is hard.. and you realise that the p51 mustang while great to fly doesnt compare to a Spit in battle.. and Zeros.. if they were faster and not made of rice paper would have been sublime...

Yes, I realise it is a game, but its meant to be as close to realistic as an arcade type thing can get - you can play a realistic mode, where your wings fall off, and a proper sim mode, where you need a full set of controls as well. They follow the specs sheets for the planes and guns etc. Its pretty fun if you are into that kinda thing.

You can have fun trolling people in pre-war ('33-38 ish) biplanes too.. they are flippin awesome.. I dont recommend the Japanese ones though, I've seen crickets sneeze with more firepower.

I can remember seeing engines running on the Lanc when it was right next to the main entrance to MOTAT on the main road. Impressive!

Soon to be three, with Just Jane located in England.

Did you find the very rare Zero fighter there as well?

I mean, we're straying pretty far from the original topic but all this chat about Lancasters reminded me of this Australian company, based in Queensland..

I kinda want one!

Anywho, back to the Wayne Gardner film. I'm going to see it with a bunch of mates on Wednesday night. Looks like it should be pretty good!

I saw (and heard) that particular Lancaster when it was flying for the French Marines. Picture was taken at Nadi c'58. Box Brownie pic.

Was at MOTAT some years back with the VCC and Bob Tizzard gave a talk about Lancasters as he was crew on one, and as mentioned that one was French from the Pacific.
Back in 2002 was camped up in London for a few months with the kids and took my oldest Son to Biggin Hill for an air show. They had a Lancaster and B17 in the air along with Hurricanes and Spitfires and some pretty amazing US jet displays.
Years earlier went to a Museum in the South of England and was surprised to see a Concord there that you could walk thru, all done out with silver service seating. They are pretty small inside compared to your usual airliners.

Unless that happened on a regular basis, then I was there that same day. Would have been about 42-43 years ago? IIRC that particular Lanc came from Canada.

It came from the French & was based in New Caledonia.

Yup, that time frame ago would be close. I thought they ran them on random occasions. No "hi-viz" shit or cones anywhere. Just the public standing back a bit to avoid the prop!

Some old chap who used to ride murdercycles.

It was a really good night. Doco was well done. There are longer cuts possibly on the way but doubt we'll see them here. Go see it.

Because I'm a bit dim and I didn't know that he was a local, it took me a while to work out who the other chap was.

Fortunately I'd read Mike Sinclairs book a while back.
