We went to the bucket racing on Sunday. The boy took the van and I went on da bike with one of my other sons to Waipawa. On the first passing lane south of Hastings, an up hill, I noted a few cars blocking the slow lane and backed off the gas a bit. People waving to slow us down. Got to the seen and saw a bike down. So stopped and went to help. The bike rider was ok but had a rather painful shoulder. It turns out he passed a vehicle going up the passing lane and then moved back in to the slow lane. As you do. But must have go distracted and ran on to the grass verge. Then it all turned pear shaped. Got back to the black stuff but got tossed off the high side. The bike was a 1200 Bandit from memory. The point is he had a clean road and clear lane but it is dangerous to relax when riding. Always stay alert.

Ummmm....sympathetic, but...on the details here...HTF do you switch so far back in to the slow lane that you hit the grass verge? Definitely had his mind on something totally not his riding (of his bike)

I did it [lost concentration] once, many years ago - scared the bejesus out of me - havnt done it since.

Basically was doing a 50 mile commute every day. One day I head a bang (it was a stone bouncing off the zorst), so looked down to see what it was. Next thing I knew, the road was green and there were white posts on my right side. I'd been sitting at about 90mph. Managed to edge the bike back onto the road - lucky there were no hidden ditches.

Still makes me sweat when I think about it...

Yup, my one and only off on a road was due to getting distracted. I allowed a tailgater to get my attention, and failed to see a corner until it was too late. Had a pillion on and all, and from the state of the bike, the two of us were lucky to walk (limp) away.

Stay focused guys . . . if you feel your self loosing concentration, take a rest.

To some degree. That look that one has when in a lot of pain makes us all think about our last half hours riding at warp speed. This is the very reason I didn't continue on and set the MP3 player up with the Escort radar detector. A good choice I think. Stay focused and enjoy the ride.

True...I know what you mean...

Maybe I'm being too harsh on the dude...I nearly rear-ended a bus which had stopped for a right turn out in the country 'cos I was checking out some hottie standing on the side of the road...

seeing a white wall approaching at 100km/h all of a sudden gives me that sweat effect.

As for the bloke who came off, he didnt look so comfortable, good warning to fella's like me who are contemplating road riding or just starting that it's no game and getting distracted is not an option.
Not such a great way to start the day just before the bucket races, I must say my first couple of laps were pretty quiet. After that, well what can i say, I've had to get new footpegs

Sometimes if you push too far before a break you can become inflicted with the mesmerization disease. This disease strikes the 'unwary' instantly. It can cause palpitations of the heart, sweats, shaking and foul language all in an instant. The throttle wrist tends to unwind as the rest of the body struggles to cope the centrline being on the wrong side of the road. It has been called the American disease for this reason.

Body coordination is at best slapstick. However upon recovery the memory cells are fully charged with the incident and if the odd finger is give in your direction or a cages hooter do not retaliate just thank god that you can still see and hear.
