Mark Gardiner is one of the better motorcycling writers around and in this piece he considers what's wrong with motorcycle advertising. He also contemplates the anomoly that the best ads featuring motorcycles are not motorcycle ads and then he shows some of the best.

Keanu Reeves is amazing. I know he's a huge fan of Norton's, I couldn't make out a brand on the bike he was riding in the advert though :(

Oooh I don't know, that French lady... Shame about her books though, only available in French and really expensive second hand. I'da thunk her books were worth translating?

Well he's certainly got good taste. Just needs to make them not look like a limousine.

Yep - The article has a valid point. I'd forgotten about Keira Knightley and her motorcycle antics. That one brought a smile to my face

Like most things, its easier to copy and improve than come up with a new design.

Buy an MV Augusta 4 ...ta da Honda 4's

Buy a BSA.... make a Kawasaki

...a WW2 DKW make a Yamaha

Buy a BMW...make a Lilac

First make Harley under licence then copy it....lots of cookie cutter cruisers

Not everyone wants a bland appliance.

KeanuReeves rides a Norton Commando, there are some pics of him on the net...one trying to start it.

The Keira Knightley one with the diskless Ducati is interesting, especially the bit where it goes down the steps...look closely.

Ummm it's MV Agusta.

That copying thing is sooo 1960s. It should have been dead and buried long since.

Reeves may have had a Norton but as mentioned in the text of the item, and in HDC's link, he owns his own motorcycle manufacturing company Arch motorcycles.

Yes your right its Meccanica Verghera Agusta.

I can't see why they ( you old fellas) used to go on about Jap Crap as took my 53 Thunderbird for a spin today and they are pretty awful to

ride, and you can have as many Norton Girls on posters as you like but at the end of the day the bike was mutton dressed as lamb.

My first attempts at riding were on a sprung hub speed twin. When I got to ride a '59 model I was hugely impressed. I've had aftermarket suspension on my last four bikes but still look back at the Triumph fondly. I'm aware that is probably full blown "rose tinted glasses" but... Fortunately the nostalgia stops waaaay short of wanting to own one.

Yes, many a rose tinted purchase has ended up on Trademe with the reason for selling as 'I just don't ride it enough' - code for I wobbles around corners, doesn't stop and vibrated by left testicle permanently back up into my groin.

Then again if I had the coin I'd own a few oldies.

The true retro experience is probably why the likes of the 'new' Bonnie sells so well - the look without any associated issues.

Do you think a new proper homage to the CB750 would sell well - cradle frame, twin shock etc etc - shit even SOHC,. Classic colours and all. And a Brembo on the front disk please.

To answer your question - Yes I do reckon it'd sell.

I'm a classic target demographic for such bikes as the modern day Bonnie. I want the look and feel (Some of it at any rate) with modern rideability and convenience. I'd love a late T160 Trident but I simply don't have the Time/Patience/Expertise to go through with it. It'd be nice to look at though...
