Anybody else with me?
I think this comments sums it up nicely........
"Ban it! I find it is usually used offensively. It is a derogative term and has been for many decades. Would I be in trouble at work or in public if I called non white oeople words that were acceptable in the USA 150 years ago but not acceptable now, to have the extent appeals of great offence are raised if someone dare mention even the beginning letter of the words. Ban it. And do it now."

‘PAKEHA’, ITS ORIGIN AND MEANING
by Jodie Ranford

I don't want to punch anyone in the face but whoever gave that twat space needs a kick up the arse.
He refers to a Kiwi fiction writer and nominates Agatha Christie. Dame Agatha was English, Dame Ngaio Marsh was the Kiwi.
"The game is afoot" though is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and is spoken by his creation Sherlock Holmes. All of which is an indication of how little this turkey actually knows.
RDR2 is apparently an amazing experience and is raking in millions, despite the fact that the people employed to create it were badly treated and some will be living in penury.
The jury is still out on the word pakeha, I was told by a native Maori speaker that it translated as "stink house" which isn't very flattering. I'm not going to get in an argument with Ross Himona though, so while it's not my favourite word I'll just live with it.
The author of the Stuff article ascribing any dislike of the word to racism is simply ridiculous.
The word 'Maori' did indeed mean normal. Prior to the arrival of Europeans there was no collective noun for Maori, they identified as Ngati Porou, Tainui, Atiawa, or whatever iwi they belonged to. It was only when there were people who were different, that they needed a word to describe themselves beyond just their iwi.
Whatever, the guy who wrote that rubbish is a twat.

its not.. actually.
It's meaning is, effectively "those pale skinned people who came on a boat", or nowadays "anyone not a Maori". It is no more offensive than you calling someone from Australia an Australian.. or calling someone a tourist, or anything else. It is only offensive if it is used in an offensive context, but that is the same for any word describing something.

Well, I was raised up in a small town with a lot of Maori and they always explained to me that it just meant "white people" and they never used it disrespectfully. And if you read the article, if it was used to mean "white pig", it wasnt being used correctly. Either they were pulling your leg, or rarking you up, or they just didnt know and wanted to insult you cuz you pissed them off.. I'd suspect the latter.
You can use what ever term you like to refer to a brown person... but since you know where the word comes from and for what it referred to, i'd advise not to.

The funny thing is, that if you ask 10 different Maori as to the meaning of "Pakeha" the will mostly likely give you 10 different answers.
When I was at 13, at intermediate, there were 3 Maori guys in my class who used to snigger the word "Pakeha" whenever I would walk past them.
According to them, I should not be offended at this.

No.
But then, I don't think people should get all bent out of shape when called names.
I do, however, get annoyed at a certain group who would crucify someone at a moments notice, for using an incorrect/improper/'offensive' terms if they come from one perceived 'oppressive' group to one perceived 'victim' group - who then proceed to defend prejudicial from their preferred 'victim' group...

it shouldnt surprise me, i guess, that you guys do not understand etymology of words:
etymology/ˌɛtɪˈmɒlədʒi/
noun
the study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history.
"the decline of etymology as a linguistic discipline"
the origin of a word and the historical development of its meaning.
plural noun: etymologies
"the etymology of the word ‘devil’"

synonyms:
derivation, word history, development, origin, source

Whilst the word to which you refer once was used without racism, it now is racist... The word Pakeha has NEVER meant anything racist, according to experts. Some people might use it in a bad way, but it is not generally thought of, in common use as racist. In fact, this is the first bunch of people I've heard of in a long time who think it is.
Its a bit of a laugh really... welcome to 1979.

Well I think it's racist, but I guess that doesn't count, because I'm essentially white, which can be a real set back most of the time.
Can't I have an opinion on it or be allowed to be offended without being mocked?
That makes you an intolerant racist doesn't it?
Try spelling Wanganui wrong to a people that didn't even have a written language.

Without commenting specifically on anything that has been said so far, I hope you Kiwis (of any ancestry or whatever) will NOT go the way of my country, in which political/social correctness has come to such an extreme that people have gotten very thin-skinned and take offence at anything that they imagine can be interpreted as a possible slur, whether intended or not. Certainly one can find a (fairly small) number of genuine unreconstructed racists, sexists, homophobes, xenophobes, and such, and they deserve to be scorned. But far more often, the "offender" has had a momentary brain fade, a moment of clumsiness, or is genuinely socially inept (a problem for a lot of us, related to shyness, and seemingly inborn), or was trying to make a joke. Unless and until you are sure the offender is intentionally malicious, consider these other possibilities and cut the guy a little slack. But that doesn't happen here. Especially on college campuses, and especially among younger generations, people have become hypersenitive to imagined slights. Indeed, claims to have been disrespected and worse seem to be a badge of honor in a country which has come to a point where victimhood has become a status symbol . . . often with legal and political support. Where historical racism, and the related isms, was despicable and is embarrassing even to those of us who were never part of it, today's exquisite hypersensitivity to insult and bragging about victimhood is pathetic, something for a society of weaklings.

Oh don't get me wrong, I've never, and never will, get offended at anything anybody calls me. (I'm half Chinese, born to a Chinese mum, but look like a native kiwi, what ever that is these days)
Call me a cracker/snowman/whitey/white face/Pakeha/white man/ghosty/pasty white dude/white devil, and I'll just laugh.
I honestly don't care, but the double standard if I ever said anything "race related" to anybody other than a white man (racist) kind of irks me somewhat....

Although I was born in North Island NZ, there's a member on there that randomly posts me red rep, always at completely harmless posts that are in no way offensive to anyone, or ever directd at him, I assume it's a him.
They usually go something like " I hope you choke on a clog & die you Dutch cunt" what the fuck? A clog is not a food group & it would be most unusual to even get one close to your mouth. A Frickandel or Oliebollen I could understand.
I really can't fathom it, but hey, he gets to stroke his cock for a minute or two & somehow feel superior & I really couldn't care less. I've tried to nut it out with him/her, but they're not really talking.
But yeah, racism is his immediate go to, regardless of wether it makes him right or wrong.
I hope he doesn't ever call me a Pakeha, now that would really wind me up.

But apparently genetics doesn't play that nicely and either does groups of people who all play exclusion games.

The most cringe-worthy bit of innocent racism I ever saw was my own father....
At a club meeting at Levels in the very late 60's. A very nice young guy had made the mistake of buying the Greeves Silverstone that old Tom Mccleary had tuned to a standstill. It had of course seized on him first time out...
Anyway, a bunch of us were standing comiserating with him when my old man speaks up...
"Paint the bloody thing brown and get one of your witch doctors to design good luck symbols to paint all over it"......
The poor guy was of course one of the very few Maori I've ever seen race bikes.
Given the condition of the damm thing, it was as good a suggestion as any. Thank fuck he had a sense of humour. I've seen him a few times since and we have a laugh about it now.

what I have learnt on the way to having a fairly full chrome topknot is that the only way something can be offensive is if a person allows it to be offensive.

When I was learning Maori (in Taranaki) we were taught that Taranaki and Whanganui Maori don't do the f sound, they pronounce wh as w. So although it's written Whanganui now, the correct pronunciation is still Wanganui.
The TV news readers and weather forecasters may have trouble getting their heads around that though.
