theres some actual old school for you: from an album from 2005, that live performance from 2009
As for Tay Tay:
She writes her own material
She owns her own material
She bullied Universal when she changed labels that its windfall gains from selling its Spotify stake be shared among the artists not trousered by the label
She was gracious when that CUNT kanye west (a talentless motherfucker if ever there was one) stole her stage at that awards.
Also, she is a talented songwriter. None of us are her audience, but some of you at least will have heard of Whiskeytown, and Ryan Adams. Ryan covered her 1989 album in its entirity track for track. It is absolutely brilliant. Shows you that a good song is a good song pretty much regardless of instrumentation or affectation.
Her pop music I can take in only small doses, but hey, its way better than what they call rap and r n b these days.

What defines "Old Skool"?
From what teh interwebz says she's been doing the big time sing thing since 2004 so that's 14yrs
10yrs is often considered "old"

Only the yoof of any given generation consider 10 years as old, history, past it.
Then they grow up.
Shirley any debate on this, "back in the day", "when I was lad", "the old 'skool'", must be over a considerable swathe of at least one generation?
I think Deborah Harry has more context, she is no longer a prominent performer but has inspired many. As an example of my feel, anyways.

At the time of Punk rock( 1976/77) I was searching out stuff from the late 60's and early 70's and was really old ( which is all the Punk Rockers did anyway). The Rolling Stones were called the Strolling Bones and they were in their late 30's.
Its interesting all the 90's bands are on the revival circuit.
Blondie was a bit lightweight...

Eerie, I was dipping my toes into West Coast US acid rock in the early 80's, more or less when my pubes where at their fluffiest.
I have since dived in with the advent of the internets.
I sometimes use music to gain the focus of a class. The stuff that focus' me gives my students focus. Very few know what I'm playing but quite often a lot of jaws are on the floor. A whole new energy ensues. The world gets a bit bigger, we have new conversations.
On with learning.

Eminem didn't shoot rappity hip hop to the top of the charts till 99. I guess Vanilla Ice was 1990 but I wouldn't consider the 90's to be rappity hip hops time that came in the 00's.
90's was more the time of the boy/girl bands - Spice Girls, N*Sync, Backstreet Boyz, 5ive etc etc

They've got a huge catalogue with a lot of commercially successful tracks but you've got to admit that the one that stands out head and shoulders above the rest is undoubtedly Wonderwall. They weren't one hit wonders but they may as well be for an awful lot of people.

Wonderwall sure had a huge impact on release. I watched a doco on Oasis recently so I guess they are more prominent in my head than they would be normally.
And yeah, they appealed to a lot of awful people.
Variety is the spice of life which is what makes music so fascinating. Stumbling across something decades old, but new to me, is still a buzz. Same with new but yet to be famous bands.
I really hope I can get to Glastonbury again before I move into a rest home.

Fuck no, the 90's was all about industrial metal and rock and roll (aka "grunge") (and country) for me. White Zombie/Rob Zombie/NIN/Soundgarden/Nirvana/Whiskeytown/Uncle Tupelo/Lucinda etc etc.
Oh yeah, 90's was all about the rise of EDM and raves and those happy faces and shit.

We had a resident Blues singer in Max but I don't know if there are any others. Anyhoo wise words of guidance for any in need.
REQUIREMENTS FOR SINGING THE BLUES
1. Most Blues begin, "Woke up this morning..."
2. "I got a good woman" is a bad way to begin the Blues, 'less you stick something nasty in the next line like, "I got a good woman, with the meanest face in town."
3. The Blues is simple. After you get the first line right, repeat it. Then find something that rhymes...sort of:
"Got a good woman with the meanest face in town.
Yes, I got a good woman with the meanest face in town.
Got teeth like Margaret Thatcher, and she weigh 500 pounds."
4. The Blues is not about choice. You stuck in a ditch, you stuck in a ditch - ain't no way out.
5. Blues cars: Chevys, Fords, Cadillacs and broken-down trucks.
Blues don't travel in Volvos, BMWs, or Sport Utility Vehicles.
Most Blues transportation is a Greyhound bus or a southbound train.
Jet aircraft an' state-sponsored motor pools ain't even in the running.
Walkin' plays a major part in the blues lifestyle. So does fixin' to die.
6. Teenagers can't sing the Blues. They ain't fixin' to die yet. Adults sing the Blues.
In Blues, "adulthood" means being old enough for the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis.
7. Blues can take place in New York City but not in Hawaii or any place in Canada.
Hard times in Minneapolis or Seattle is probably just clinical depression.
Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City are still the best place to have the Blues.
You cannot have the blues in any place that don't get rain.
8. A man with male pattern baldness ain't the blues. A woman with male pattern baldness is.
Breaking your leg cause you skiing is not the blues.
Breaking your leg 'cause a alligator be chomping on it is.
9. You can't have no Blues in a office or a shopping mall. The lighting is wrong.
Go outside to the parking lot or sit by the dumpster.
10. Good places for the Blues:
a. Highway
b. Jailhouse
c. Empty bed
d. Bottom of a whiskey glass
Bad places:
a. Dillard's
b. Gallery Openings
c. Ivy League Institutions
d. Golf Courses
11. No one will believe it's the Blues if you wear a suit, 'less you happen to be a old ethnic person, and you slept in it.
12. Do you have the right to sing the Blues?
Yes, if:
a. You older than dirt
b. You blind
c. You shot a man in Memphis
d. You can't be satisfied
No, if:
a. you have all your teeth
b. you were once blind but now can see
c. the man in Memphis lived
d. you have a 401K or trust fund
13. Blues is not a matter of color. It's a matter of bad luck.
Tiger Woods cannot sing the blues. Sonny Liston could.
Ugly white people also got a leg up on the blues.
14. If you ask for water and your darlin' give you gasoline, it's the Blues.
Other acceptable Blues beverages are:
a. Cheap Wine
b. Whiskey or Bourbon
c. Muddy Water
d. Nasty Black Coffee
The following are NOT Blues beverages:
a. Perrier
b. Chardonnay
c. Snapple
d. Slim Fast
15. If death occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it's a Blues death.
Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is another Blues way to die.
So is the electric chair, substance abuse, and dying lonely on a broke down cot.
You can't have a Blues death if you die during a tennis match or getting liposuction.
16. Some Blues names for women:
a. Sadie
b. Big Mama
c. Bessie
d. Fat River Dumpling
17. Some Blues names for men:
a. Joe
b. Willie
c. Little Willie
d. Big Willie
18. Persons with names like Michelle, Amber, Debbie, and Heather cannot sing the Blues, no matter how many men they shoot in Memphis.
19. Make your own Blues name Starter Kit:
a. name of physical infirmity (Blind, Cripple, Lame, etc)
b. first name (see above) plus name of fruit (Lemon, Lime, Kiwi, etc)
c. last name of President (Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore, etc)
For example, Blind Lime Jefferson, Jakeleg Lemon Johnson or Cripple Kiwi Fillmore, etc. (Well, maybe not "Kiwi.")
20. I don't care how tragic your life: if you own a computer, you cannot sing the blues.

[Spoken]
We want information, information, information
Who are you?
The new number 2
Who is number 1?
You are number 6
I am not a number, I am a free man!
[Laughter]
[Verse 1]
I'm on the run, I kill to eat
I'm starving now, feelin' dead on my feet
Goin' all the way, I'm nature's beast
Do what I want and do as I please
[Pre-Chorus]
Run, fight to breathe, it's tough
Now you see me, now you don't
Break the walls, I'm comin' out
[Chorus]
Not a prisoner, I'm a free man
And my blood is my own now
Don't care where the past was
I know where I'm going
Out!
[Verse 2]
If you kill me, it's self defense
But if I kill you then I call it vengeance
Spit in your eye I will defy
You'll be afraid when I call out your name
[Pre-Chorus]
Run, fight to breathe, it's gonna be tough
Now you see me, now you don't
Break the walls, I'm comin' out
[Chorus]
Not a prisoner, I'm a free man
And my blood is my own now
Don't care where the past was
I know where I'm going
[Chorus 2]
I'm not a number, I'm a free man
Live my life where I want to
You'd better scratch me from your black book
'Cos I'll run rings around you
[Chorus]
Not a prisoner, I'm a free man
And my blood is my own now
Don't care where the past was
I know where I'm going
[Chorus 2]
I'm not a number, I'm a free man
Live my life where I want to
You'd better scratch me from your black book
'Cos I'll run rings around you
[Chorus]
Not a prisoner, I'm a free man
And my blood is my own now
Don't care where the past was
I know where I'm going
