Hi , having just purchased an xr200 ( yes it has the RFVC twin carb engine 😕) I had the semi clever idea of stripping it down to reco the engine and tidy it all up .
Can anyone tell me who might be the best option around the north shore to reco the engine for me ?
Also, I need a new throttle grip and possibly cables ... where would I find those ...? Repro or second hand ?

The North Shore is like a foreign country to me but if you care to venture as far as Grafton, Taylor Engineering have done good work for me on VW and BMW heads.
Trade Me used to be good but just a lot of Chinese crap these days.
There are some specialist UK shops for Hondas like https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/by-model/
If you want the parts vapour blasted Trustme on this forum is in Greenhithe and your parts will look like new :-)

Just the grips? Any bike shop will have a few options available in stock. Honda shop will have access to cables or international as noted above.

When you say strip it down to reco the engine then ask who can do the engine work, have you pulled the engine out of the frame or apart? And what needs doing to it. Don't take a box of bits to the reco company and say fix this' ......

Those Honda Singles are pretty easy to work on..started out my pull it apart to see how it works on an SL 125 ( now highly sought after and highly collectable :lol:). Can become slightly addictive.

The 200's were okay not as much trouble as the 250 re and RF's.
Best looking models Honda made Bailey colour scheme.
But why reco the engine are you sure it needs it?
Make sure you keep the oil clean and use decent oil. the later models had more oil a cooler and no more issues.
Grips any motobike shop will have cables get an cable oiler unless they are frayed they just need oil.lube ie spray chain lube

Ballards used to have a lot of generic Honda stuff nice cattledog as well.

The 250 of the same era disc front end bolts on.
Pretty sure the 200 had a 17 rear that really needs changing if you want to use it long term

i stripped and refreshed a few of those engines years ago, look for hairline cracks between the valve seats and the spark plug hole. dont actually know what you should do if you find any... i ignored them haha
theyre a fast reving motor with those twin carbs onboard. hotshot honda owners of the day used to file a slot in the linkage so one carb was further closed than the other..effectively just starting and idling on one carb...the avoid the starting problems when hot

Hey thank you to all who have replied and I appreciate the good advice .
I have pulled the engine out but not apart and have stripped the frame to repaint .
Unfortunately I don’t have the mechanical skills to do the engine reco myself .... but I will do as much to the rest of the bike as I can as a learning curve .
A lot of this will be new for me so am learning as I go .

I am still puzzled why you say it needs reconditioning?
What ever you do don't strip the engine down then expect to hand it to someone to put it together.

Ps: apparently the engine was run while without oil so it stopped and has not been able to be started again.

okay open up the tappet caps and have a look if its roasted cams and rockers in there its likely totally shagged.
Your cheapest option is to fit a Chinese 200.
The better option is to find a XL/XR200 2 valve engine.
the rolls royce option is to find a later XR250 engine.
If you have a masochist streak you might attempt to rebuild the roasted engine.
or try and find another one.

i cant find much on he net about putting in a post 86-96 XR250 engine but other than the carb airbox and maybe ignition
I would sugest its a bolt in I say this as
The mounts must be the same position as the crankcase gaskets are.

Haynes manual not everyone speaks or understands American
But by the time he buys a mag puller Manuals (ps on the small hondas the axle works as a flywheel puller)and a filter tools (ie cut down socket)and a set of rings he could have brought a running XR250 engine or a chinky copy

Clymers were always better, nice color pictures and better written instructions.

Colour is spelt with a U. Don't let them brainwash you with simplified spelling. It may seem logical but the English didn't conquer an Empire by being logical.

My Xr200RE was a grenade that used to find new and interesting ways of breaking on a regular basis, culminating in cracking a crankcase in an national enduro.
I think I pushed that POS further than I rode it.

Chain came off.
If memory serves, the sprocket guard/cover is shaped so that it gathers the chain under the countershaft sprocket.
Under the sprocket is a stupidly placed bolt head, so the chain gathers and jams between this and the guard - and then whooska! - cracked cases!.
It was a paragon of design, was the RE.
Let's see now - the head was replaced coz the the valve guides were at the wrong angle or leaked or summat.
The airbox leaked.
The twin carb setup was problematic (the hot wheeze was to swap the main jets).
There were other problems, but years of therapy have allowed me to block out this horror show...

Same with the Cb750 plus a lot of other bikes re cases they make case savers now
