Following some comments on the thread "Is it illegal to ZING on your bike?" http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=18530&page=11&pp=15 , Could I suggest that where moderators feel that a post should be deleted for whatever reason, that they insert a new post along the lines of "<Username>'s post on xxxxxx deleted because of......."

That would give the owner of that post an idea of where they have transgressed, and the rest of us at least would have some inkling of what was going on.

cencorship is EVIL--praticed only in worst case situations--and usuallyb a Pm is sent to the person whose post is edited

Now I didn't think of that, I posted something recently that wasn't there the next time I checked the thread, just thought my computer had crashed. (Quite often I post something and not check the thread). I suppose what I thought I had posted could of been taken the wrong way, but it was by no means a piss take, the situation was fact based.

So have any mod's deleted any of my posts? Say in Korea's first thread?

So have any mod's deleted any of my posts? Say in Korea's first thread?Fraser if anyone has deleted any of your posts they would have informed you of that. Editing of thread/posts are not that common. Moderators work on guidelines that have been set out for them, a general delete would not happen.

:spudwave:

Joni - I know that I had a thread edited and was not informed of this fact by the moderator.

It was in Gareth_D's thread about washing bikes..
I had in fact QUOTED his whole message.. and yes I checked it.
Then later on it was edited down to just what he was quoting to do the job.
Now I did not edit it myself...

I have since gone back in and in the EDIT and reason why I have stated that my post was edited but not by me.

Im not making a issue over it, as its long gone... but some one did edit my post, and I just wanted to let you know that not all moderators let the person know that they have edited it.

Cheers.

I can answer some of that Crashe. Not sure if I've edited one of yours but I go in every now and then and remove unneccesary quoting (quoteing the post directly above or the whole post when only responding to part of it ect, ect.) That's all I do without telling the originator first and I hardly ever change the actuall content of the post.

I don't edit for content like cursing and that unless I get 3 reported messages things and usually someone else gets to it before me. I also tend to send a PM for the first report giving them a sort of warning and the second one I ask them to edit it. Third one is where I go and do it.

Reported messages ?? what are these "reported messages " ?? Is there some sort of reporting system ?? Or are some people running off to find a mod and crying "oh oh oh he said a rude word wahhhhh " ?

Usually a bit more serious than that Ixion. An example, that vid that LiazTZ posted a while back that so many peaple got upset about the one where the cats were being tortured or something like that (never watched it)

And thanks for that John, ya beat me cause my net speed is crap right now lol.

TOO MUCH PORN EH?

Whoops I quoted the whole thing.

/runs away laughing.

That was just an example of not what to do on kb or else the deadly doomclouds of moderation will absorb your post.

quoting the last post is usually deleted --the reason being quite simply because it all uses up space in the bosses puter-Hey Im no technogeek I dont know the right words.
One other reason is a newer member giving out personal details without thinking about what they are doing. -A PM is sent to the poster and if they are still happy to post the personal stuff then they are welcolm to.
Keep in mind folks --admin aint a paid job and its usually pretty darned thankless. dambed if we do dambed if we don't

Well, bugger me! I never knew that. Hm, better check out all these other ones too.

EDIT: Well, I never. I've now discovered that the little page that comes up that has all the emoticons listed, isn't just an aide-memoire for the codes - if you click the icon it transfers the code directly to you post. Nice.

Can't say anyone is doing much wrong. I did have a problem for a while much like Winja stated earlier, which I thought myself was unacceptable and a gross mis-use of control. Yes, sometime people will post things here on this site that may upset others. But the last time I checked the legislation, its called freedom of speech. This contry is by far way too concirned with being PC and individual rights, to the extent when others' rights, morals and responsibility has been forgotten or ignored. The fastest way to get me off this site is to also adopt a PC stratigy(sp). I'm weel known in my place of work as the one who challenges PC thinking, its great as it generally is a load of rubbish when I consider: why I work there, who I'm helping, logic and most importantly, common sense. :spudwave:

Waylander
16th October 2005, 09:36
Not attacking you or anything just that you're arguments about rights and such can go both ways. So we promote just the rights of the person posting the stuff and ignore the rights of the ones reading it? There really is no middle ground though the majority of us Mods constantly try to find it. As Frosty said, damned if we do damned if we dont.

Ixion
16th October 2005, 09:58
I don't have a problem per se with the mods keeping things from going "too far" (worth bearing in mind that there are some young folk hang out here, too).

But i do think that maybe there should be a note made when it's done - just "Post moderated" or some such. Gets jolly confusing otherwise - in the ZINGing thread I thought at first I'd posted into the wrong thread , and part of my post made no sense because the posts it referred to were now gone.

Ixion
16th October 2005, 10:03
quoting the last post is usually deleted --the reason being quite simply because it all uses up space in the bosses puter-Hey Im no technogeek I dont know the right words.
..

There is sometimes a reason behind that though. Some folk, like me, take quite a while assembling a post - because I have to keep stopping through the process when pesky people want me to do werk - just cos I get paid for it, unreasonable ain't it.

So when I start a post I don't know whether it's going to end up directly after the post I'm responding to or not. While I'm putting it together , another half dozen quicker off the mark folk may get in ahead of me. And if I don't quote , it can end up with the post being unintelligable or confusing. (OK, more unintelligable and confusing than usual)

Which said , if it does end up immediately after the post it refers to, and the quote is long, I'll go back and edit it.

I totally agree, that if a moderater alters someones thread, then they should state it they have altered the thread. Then the person in question can then PM the moderator and find out the real reason why, if they are not happy with the changes.

THERES LOTS OF THINGS THAT WOULD BE FAIR AND NICE BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS THIS IS SPANKMES HOUSE , ITS HIS RULES , HE CAN DO WHAT HE WANTS , HE CAN CLOSE ACCOUNTS , HE CAN CLOSE THE SITE , HE CAN CHANGE THE RULES THEN CHANGE THEM BACK , HE CAN APPLY DIFFERENT RULES TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE CAUSE WE ARE ALL GUESTS

But on a more serious note, perhaps we should keep in mind when posting that kids have access to this too. Would you want your 12 year old son/daughter reading what you're about to write?????

Hey just keep in mind guys--mods are human. They can't get it right every time. Ya make the best call ya can at the time.
I know one mod who was getting some pretty nasty stuff flung at them but still had to respond in an impartial way. Can be a tadd tough.
RE IXIONS point--Can I suggest you still quote so you remember what that person says -then phrase ya answer so you no longer need to quote --sorta like I just did. Reason being as I understand it --as the site grows bigger we use more band width -which cost mooolah- therefore by cutting back on quoting -slightly less band width -less moolah

Moderators: If you move a thread to a different section, can you please let the person know where it is moved to. THANKS.

I started a thread in General ravings "Yikes 9 cops and only 1 stopped me" now it is no longer there and I cant find it.... to post a link to it into another thread.

Update... someone moved it to "Meetings and Events" section...huh !!!!!

Crashe - I can undertsand where you are coming from. HOWEVER I do as I am sure the other moderators do a lot on this site every day. If I do something that will impact someone like the other day, I let all the people involved know as well as SpankMe. Not every little thing I do is announced to the entire site tho.

How about if you have a question ask. The forum you placed it in will only have one or two mods. PM us and ask us what we have done if you are concerned. :spudwhat:

IMO the tasks of the Mods is a thankless one... and full credit to them for that. But announcing that something has been edited would at least be common decency. How am I to know what is considered offensive unless I am told? I'm hardly a shrinking violet, and offending me is a pretty hard act. Winja would need an extra dose of viagra to achieve that. But there's plenty of softer folk out there who lose the plot over things I wouldn't even notice.

Point taken about younguns viewing the site, but I reckon the adults should grow a brain sometimes... discussions on pigs, runners and the Iraq war usually bring the polar opposites into the discussion. I think it should be a case of if you don't like it, move along to the next post.
