Hi all

I have a 1991 gsf250 that has been running pretty great up until now (minus a small charging issue).
However I went to go for a ride today and went to start the bike, it started fine, but was making a loud noise that sounded as if the starter was still engaged after the engine has started.
I turned it off pretty quickly.

The starter is not running when I turn it off and the key is just on the on position.

Im not sure that it is the starter motor exactly, but I'm not sure what else it could be?
Maybe the starter solenoid is starting to go?

EDIT: Never mind, pretty sure this is a mechanical issue now. Engine isnt turning over, pretty sure its seized

Caaaaallllmmmm!!! Its probably the starter solenoid sticking give it a clout with a hammer see if it frees up, if it works after, it was stuck, just replace it.

id think so too, if the back wheel wasn't skidding when trying to crash start it, and the oil wasnt sparkly with the occasional metal bits.

This'd happen if the starter clutch refused to disengage. I'm not familiar with your specific bike, how easy is it to get at the starter motor and pull the thing?

It is sounding more and more like you'll have to get into the cases.

Its just behind the cylinders, on top of the transmission, reasonably easy to get to.

Ok, then I'd suggest pulling the starter motor and the spark plugs, then try (gently) turning the engine over via the back wheel while having the ignition switched off.

Just pulled the starter (easier than i thought), tried turning over the engine, Nothing, no play at all, wouldn't turn even a millimeter

Ok, take the side cover off and try turn it over with a socket

Sounds like you're going to be needing my GPZ500s for a great price!

But you don't even know how much yet.:msn-wink:
I'd take the broken bike as a part trade. Very small part that is.

So good news and bad news...

Good news is that the motor still spins and seems to still hold compression well.

Bad news is that the magnets on the charging coils (Alternator? Not sure exactly what its called on a motorbike) have completely disintegrated and have probably sent metal throughout the engine.
Im probably going to have to strip the motor down, clean it, and rebuild it (yay...) before I will be comfortable running it again.

In other news, anyone know where to find a 91 GSF250 service manual?

I have a total of 50 dollars in my account atm lol. I think im going to try and fix my bike. Thanks for the offer though.

So the stator shat itself huh, not ideal... Replace it run some cheap oil for a short ride replace oil and filter with quality stuff and wallah fixeddd?

I guess there was a chunk in the starting gears locking the whole system up

Yeah pretty much. Im going to rebuild the engine and make sure that theres nothing gone through the engine. Theres a couple other issues I want to address at the same time, so kinda killing two birds with one stone. Also gives me piece of mind rather than hoping theres no metal getting where I really don't want it.

You will need lots of those $50s to "rebuild" a motor! What's wrong with it?

Oil leak from one of the gaskets, running too rich, terrible paint on the chassis, general age stuff. Im going to turn it into a more long term project, hence why im not too concerned about the price of a rebuild atm, leaves time to save and research.

+1 to the cost but well... it's an unusual situation because it's bits of magnet. They'll stick to things so they won't do the usual and migrate down to the sump.

Exactly, may as well take the time and do it right, by the end I may have a basically brand new bike lol
