Hi Guys

I have just bought a FZR 1000 1992 , which is in genuinely mint conidtion, only has 11000km on it. I took it for a test ride around some streets and bought it on the strength of reputation and the awesome condition and the colours match my helmet:rolleyes:; also the price was very sharp.

However I noticed the front end seemed to want to tuck in very quickly around the slow corners that I took. The owner seemed to be the genuine guy who had hardly touched the bike since buying it 3 yrs ago and hadn't even checked tyre pressures and stuff. So there could be something very simple to adjust to fix this issue.

I currently own a YZF 750 and the handling on that is spot on, very neutral and confidence inspiring so I know how good these bikes can be.

I checked the head and there was no movement at all, the disks are straight with no noise, the tyre wasn't flat or particlualry soft. So what should the settings for the front end be, compression, preload, rebound, tryre pressure etc etc. Anything else I should be aware of? To repeat this bike is truly mint, so there is no hint of crash damage or wear etc.

I pick up the bike from the current owner next week so it would be nice to be informed beofre I start using the bike in anger.

Looking forward to riding this bike for the summer!!!:niceone:

Good looking bike there. TonyB pulled up next to me on his FZR1000 last night, I did a double take as I thought it was a very good looking bike. Congrats!

I love that era of jap bikes.. 1988-98 or so. Just look so darn cool, especially that FZR1k!.
Reminds me of a binned old-school square/chunky gsxr1100 down at the wreckers, would be lovely to get restored if I knew how...

Have fun riding her, those older bikes know a thing or two the young ones don't

everyone knows Im a retard, Im comfortable with that though, but first thing I would do is check the tyres, does the front trear match ie same profile same roundness ? is the front particulary worn ?
this could be the reason it is unsteady, most likely it is anyway I think , I hope

Fuck off dont you cunts laugh at me ........................ wankers

Congrats on the new bike. :niceone:
Did the CBR900 deal fall through?

Check again Frosty- this one has USD's. I have heard that the later ones with USD's have a tendency to fall into corners. But I suspect it will have something to do with the front tyre- inthe photo it has a huuuuuge chicken strip, so either to profile is all wrong or it's never been tipped over very far with that rim protector on and you are striking manky old rubber that's never been used.

Nice bike by the way!

Both tyres (sportmaxes) are in good nick with loads of tread. They are 3 yrs old and the owner has obviously never pushed them at all as they have inch wide chicken strips on them. I reckon first thing I'll do is check tyre pressures, then suspension then give it some go and see what happens.

Well I picked the bike up today and took it for a quick spin on Silverdale Albany highway. Before I did that I checked the tyre pressures, OMG there were about 17psi. So pumped up and left. Straight away the handling was spot on.

So initial impressions, the bike is mint, I mean mint. Good torque, good thrust, good handling good brakes good gears. Top end was not as strong as I thought it'd be and there are only 5 gears. Some small wheelies in first, yes I can feel that coming on. On arrival at home I wipped off the tank and checked the carbs, no rubber restrictors, hmm ok, I really was spoiled by that R1! Everything feels slow in comparison.

Actualy the bike felt quite a lot like the yzf 750, bit heavier and a gruntier but kinda the same. Funnily enough the R1 felt a bit like these bikes too just more modern. mmmm maybe there is some sort of link here.

So far so good.

On 91 it should dyno at 120-130 hp at the wheel. I have recently discovered that my one prefers 98 or 96. Runs HEAPS better, but you are never going to get away from the fact that the bike is 20 to 30kg heavier than the R1.

I'll throw it on the dyno at red baron soon and see what its putting out. The previous owner said it was running rich so maybe I'll get it balanced/tuned as well.

Well put it on the dyno, and 121ps at rear. I have booked it in for a tune and service today so maybe get a few more hp out of it. Me and bugjuice went for a run yesterday evening and the bike went bloody well, so so far I am a very happy camper. :niceone:

yep, tis a good bike there.. Good run last night, cheers.
Haven't checked the bike this morning, hopefully that wasn't a puncture in the rear!

That's bloody close to a 1st gen R1 rear wheel figure.

Very good score there.

I used to hate those things. Their grunt out of a corner always undid all my good work in and through on the RC30. Steam in first to a corner and then duck as all the FZR1000s swarmed around you on the way out. Rinse and repeat all the way around the track.

Had the bike fully serviced at Red Baron, bike feels even faster, and tighter handling! Goes harder and longer at top end. The mechanic said the carbs where way out of balance. Apart from that he said the bike was in excellent condition. He put it back on the dyno, but he's a bit of young fella, and he kept getting wheel spin on the dyno drum, so couldn't get an accurate reading. Awesome.

Met Gareth down there, he's looking to organise a Kiwi Biker dyno session.

BTW, Red Baron are fuckin expensive! Least I know the bike is ready for the summer, bring it on! :woohoo:
