View Full Version : Opinions on purchasing a new bike

So I am considering buying a new or second-hand bike :) My only real experience with the long term running of a bike is the gt250r which has been... an experience (I am much more mechanical now haha).
I know everyone has different opinions so love to hear them to make an informed decision.
I am thinking of moving to an approx 600, maybe larger though do not think I have any need for a 1000 in Auckland.
Just want your views on bikes around the 5k and 10k give or take mark.
It is my daily driver 82kms - 90kms Monday - Friday
My pref is sport bikes.
- Reliability is a big thing for me since owning this Hyosung.
- Accerlation is next as I do not care about top speed at all (as long as it can go 100ks).
- Fuel cost is next
- The noise it makes is also not an issue for me as I now realise that most people think your a tosser for having a loud car / bike haha but if its loud so be it (I'll enjoy it haha)
A lot of people say my bike is uncomfortable but I have found it fine so that is not an issue.
Was looking at second hand Yamaha r6, mt-07, CBR but there are a lot of other options out there of course.
Thanks

I'd encourage you to seriously look at Triumph 675 Daytona.
I absolutely loved riding my wife's one, got real soul & makes a beautiful sound to the rider even with the standard exhaust.
More torquey than a 600 four & great to look at too.
At no point will you wish you had a faster bike.
'08 '09 is a good model/price point.

You could have a chat to Tui on this board. He's got a Ninja he can't ride at the moment and is looking for a learner bike. You might be able to shift on the Hyosung.

Sv650 comes to mind.
Won’t win any beauty contests with it (naked one looks alright) but they seem adequate for most duties, hard to kill, and the parts network is there.

OK so here's what you need to do.
Buy a Triumph Street Triple R from 2009 through 2011. All the bike you will need on the road. You can do anything on it from trackdays to touring. They are very reliable and mine has only had one recall (reg/rec) - if yours has had that done you will be sweet. They are available in your price range.
Do eeeeeeeet.
If you want a left field choice buy a Buell XB12S

I'm not saying it's a great deal or anything, I tend to buy bikes just because of that slightly sexual feeling that you can get from a bike. The exception with this is a KLR650 - nothing sexual about it at all but it's still a great bike. Have fun, you're about to embark on a great chapter in motorcycling life.

Hornet 900. Pick them up cheap now and ultra reliable. Fit some low bars for better comfort.
Ideal move up bike to get that big bike feel (mid you pretty much the same size as the Hornet 600) and decent power.
Thrash it for a year or so while you save for that hyper sports bike and if you buy wisely you are likely to get the same money back when you sell.

Some nice bikes listed so will definitly keep these in mind tho alot seem to have quite high ks.
What sort of ks Max should i be looking at on a second hand bike before going no thanks. On a car if go over the 100k mark but I know a bike is no where near as high. Sadly so many variables I guess also as you never know how the old owner treated it

It's a pretty broad topic, you can get a BMW R1200gs with plenty of useful life left in it that's done over 100,000km, you probably wouldn't want to try that with a Hyosung 250.
The sweet spot between getting something that's a chunk cheaper than new & still having a decent amount of life in it would be 30 to 40,000km ish.

Noble covers all the things that a 1973 Kawasaki triple for example, mainly wasn't.
Reliable, low maintenance, fuel efficient, safe handling, easy starting, great brakes, low emission, comfortable, good lighting, durable & well. . . just bloody boring.

80-90 kms commuting daily in Auckland :(.
I used to commute daily with some motorway thrown in but been driving an old van for the last few years.
By the time I put my gear on , take the bike outside I'm already 10 mins down.
Must be why you see guys weaving in and out to make it up.
Have commuted on scooters, scramblers, classics and sports bikes.
If I was doing it now I'd pick something with quick steering, good acceleration, light with a loud horn.
I'd not waste my money buying anything too fancy for commuting, save the money to get a property.

just pick a bike you know that on your shittest day at work with the shittest weather how happy/comfortable/safe you'll be on the way home --- lane splitting for the first 15-30 mins too so its not like its super fun riding until you get south of bombay --- perhaps a gsx1250 they go pretty cheap and are nice commuters

There used to be an older guy who owned one of these and took part in the organised Rusty Nuts 1600km/24 hour and Southern Cross round NZ in 5 days endurance events. Did bloody well on it and always finished in very respectable times. As you say, not only good for commuting but serious rides too.

You wake up one day & you find you have stopped caring about what strangers make of you.
About your age I reckon.
Seriously though, I have a decent range of bikes I can choose from to ride each day, some would be perceived as cooler than this, but it's T max for the win every time if it's a commute type job.
But yeah, I followed a mate that was riding it on the weekend, it looked pretty retarded.

Love my SV650 for the kind of riding you do. I don't do a long daily commute, just once a week up and down to Hamilton, so sometimes I do have to get through Auckland traffic (CBD-Takanini). After Tak it opens right up and is much more enjoyable a ride.
I do love the MT09 I upgraded to, but practically, it doesn't really improve my life over the SV650. It has a bit more get-up-and-go when I want to pass, but I don't get to the other end any faster. It also sucks a lot more fuel (I can do 300kms to a tank on the SV - that's on 12L of fast dinosaurs or about $30-35 fuel per week).

Yes it does suck but gotta pay the bills (use to live 12mins from work not there fault i moved right). A loud horn is a definite. Already have a house but def can do more renos or more towards the mortgage right.

The hardest part is my wife is having some say in what I get (ofcourse it is a partnership). Her views are either "I don't care" when its is a sport looking bike like the Ninja Yamahas or Hyosung gts but if it is a naked or cruiser her view is "no not that one its ugly" so I dont care or its ugly haha. Just like the what do you want for dinner debate.
Dammit people! Why can you not be more helpful and be tell me that you can get the best bike in the world for really cheap haha. Why does everyone have to have there own opnion :)

So turns out this was useless. I am sitting my restricted and my reward was ditch the Hyosung that I have been using as my daily for a couple of years get a new fun bike... Then bam restricted is LAMS I assumed Learner approved Motorcycles only applied to well Learners but guess LRAMS sounds dumb. Teaches me to be lazy and not get my restricted then full.
I like insurance so got to follow the law.
I understand why of course just a little frustrating. So yea I believe nearly all Lams are about the same in the acceleration aspect so it really just comes down to comfort and reliability
Sorry for wasting time but any LAM opinions feel free to let me know.

OK so I come to this a bit late, that one seems a tad expensive for 2007 though. Apart from that, Mat Oxley, MotoGP journo, IoM winner and lap record holder and former GP rider, has a better riding CV than most, but he owns and uses a Yamaha Max.

The LAMS version is somewhat dialled back. For some may be, but MT-07 and XSR 700 the physical engine capacity is reduced to 655 cc from 689 cc (cylinders are narrower with intake changes). It's all about power to weight ratio up to max 660cc engine regardless of weight. Some makes use ECM trickery to limit power. Others use engine components.

Should be fine, be lucky if it has 50mm max movement. The seat/tank is a special set-up to reduce tank vibration - sit it on top of a padded seat <_<
