So, what does that mean for people buying a new bike after April next year? Probably just means a restriction to what bikes are sold here, any model that doesn't have ABS will not be available to NZ buyers. Dearer bikes won't be affected much at all, but some budget bikes will no longer be available here.

ABS was commonly available on European cars in 1985, if the motorcycle industry can't offer that kind of technology thirty five years later then they only have themselves to blame.
I'm sure we will all scrape by somehow.

Bikes need ABS in Europe already. Small bikes are equipped overseas, it's just a matter of having it as part of the package available here.

And even more relevant to us Australia has it already too.

My bad, I must've misread it as effective rather than passed. Cheers.

Yes, I'm sure there will be plenty of compliant bikes. It might make some cheaper bikes unavailable, but safer bikes will be a good thing.
There will still be lots of 2nd hand bikes without ABS for a long time to come.

Current-model motorcycles and imported used motorcycles will need to have ABS fitted as standard from 1 November 2021.

Several limited exceptions are included in the rule change, including the importation of classic and collectable motorcycles.

This worries me. Who gets to define classic or collectable?

Every time the government gets concerned about my safety, I seem to end up poorer.

ABS is nice to have, but who cares if its available or not. If you can't stop quickly on gravel with a single front disc with 2 pot caliper and a drum brake, maybe bikes are just not for you? I'd rather they made rider training compulsory rather than what kinda brakes you have.

Which is fucking stupid. I want to import a CBR954 which is a modern classic. I'm not waiting until 2042
