Vapourblasting in Christchurch

Hi guys, thought I'd give you all a heads up that I've just set up a vapourblast operation in Burwood, Chch.
Doing a GSX engine for Grumph at the moment. There have been previous discussions in this section re getting media into oil galleries, etc, so this is one area that requires a lot of care.
After blasting, I am painting the cases, block, head and covers in a 2 pack satin epoxy paint. I did this to my own GS1000S about 6 years ago, I have done numerous trips around both islands since, and I continue to be impressed at how well the epoxy is holding up. Still looks great.343307

I had an engine vapour blasted here in Tauranga and the result was outstanding. It's such a great process for bike parts.

The 'Macchi is still in the same state it's been in for the past 4 years!! Sad, eh.

The plan is to rebuild it early next year, restore my NC30, fix up the grandkids' monkey bike, etc, etc ...... Don't want to 'restore' the 'macchi- love the patina of 35 years use.

Currently blasting and epoxying a GSX750 engine for one of Grumph's Customers. Engine vapourblasted to slightly rough surface to give paint good key.

Tonight's job is to cut out some templates from customwood to block off all the orifices that we don't want paint in... 343695343696
Just got to drill holes and attach templates. Hopefully be nice and hot this weekend to get painting done.

What paint brand do you use for engine casings? And is it easy to spray or a bit of an arse? Thanks...

Hi Laava, sorry, haven't been on site for a while....
The paint I use is available from Resene Automotive Paints and is called Durapox. It's a 2-pack, (so contains isocyanates), but dries as hard as. The only area I've had an issue is the starter cover beneath the carbs where petrol leaked onto it. It's bubbled, so I need to redo that bit.

Hi guys, the GSX engine for Grumph's client is all done and looking good.
After vapourblasting, degreasing it has been treated to 2 coats of satin black 2 pack epoxy, which is an etch primer as well. This paint is used on the Americas Cup yachts, so should stand up to NZ shore based conditions, eh?
I've had good service out of it for the last 6 years on my GS thou.

According to your mate Mr G Martin, the ace finish is vaporblast the frame and rub down with scotchbrite....

But learn from his mistake and block all the holes in the frame first.

I've simply got to assemble it without fucking the finish.....A layer of shop rags on the bench about 2in thick usually works.

Well, finally got onto my own NC....
Vapourblasted frame/ swingarm this weekend, starting to get keen again! Did valve clearances this arvo- all on the tight side, so set gaps to the 'loose' spec to save me having to do it for a few years!
