This is a little long winded so you're gonna have to bear with me....
First it starts the week b4 last when I dropped the bike, nothin major, just coming to a stop on a sideroad and so busy trying to avoid some nasty potholes I didn't see the patch of gravel. Front wheel went out and next thing I know I'm sitting beside the bike cursing myself. Damage is mostly cosmetic tho I did manage to crack the footpeg mount so it must've hit hard.
Anyway, took it in to Bayride to price it up, hoping it wouldn't be over $1500. Decided to claim insurance once the bill got over $3000 (ended up close to $4500) $104 for an indicator and just the nose cone alone costs $1232!!!! :eek5: WTF?
Anyway that's all good, claim is approved no worries, however, it takes 10 weeks to get the new panels in!!! WTF?? this is getting pretty bad. Guess I'll just have to ride around on a pretty 2nd hand looking bike for a while.
But that's not the end of it...... Friday went for a ride with Saul and a mate of his (awesome ride btw :niceone: ). Just out of Whangamata hear one the guys tooting behind me. look back then down to see steam pissin out of my bike. Pulled over and discovered a split coolant hose.
Rang AA, the woman I spoke to wasn't the sharpest.... I shoulda known what I was in for when she asked me "Is you're bike a manuel or auto?" :slap: , and it got worse from there. Anyway, got towed home finally (still waiting for the $120 bill). While standing on the side of the road for 1 1/4 hrs rang Bayride to order a new hose......
None in the country, so a 2 week wait!!! :brick: WTF??? For a f^%$en hose! I need a jappa.
Anyway, now I've had my bitch....
They're gonna replace the muffler cause it's a bit scratched. I had a genuine Triumph aftermarket carbon can on there, loved the sound and look but build quality is shit, it leaked between the carbonfibre and the chrome ends. Lookin at a Micron carbon can, Anyone got one? how do you find it.
Also, anyone out there with a Daytona 6/6.5 or TT600 with an aftermarket can? What have you got and how do you find it???
cheers

Have heard of afew Triumph's cracking their case's after been dropped .One up here spat the Balance shaft out the front after been slid down the road . Was told they should have the Engine bolts loosened & then retightend so as to Releave any stress caused by the inpack of hitting the ground . My be worth checking this out doesn't take long to undo then do back up a couple of bolts . Could save alot of money in the long run

I think you're being extraordinarily harsh on Triumph. I'm waiting six weeks for a Hex head FMA4 bolt and threaded insert for my gas cap on the CB400, ex-Japan. If you want to curse anything, curse JIT spares stocking practices, and the management "discipline" that spawned them.
Stay away from Carbon cans. They're in reality used as "throw away" race spares, not for long term use. Carbon fibre is really strong but very brittle and constant vibration makes it fray. V-Twins absolutely murder Carbon Fibre end cans. Micron are an excellent brand, but do consider Neptune.
I wouldn't expect you'd get better original spares service from a Japanese company. Don't forget that NZ is a tiny, tiny, miniscule market, as far away from anywhere as you can get.
Bugger about the off though, and such a lovely bike to do it too! You're all OK I hope?

That's actually good advice for ANY bike that's smacked the ground hard.

Yeah thanks Jim I was fine.... might have hurt my fist had there been something to punch nearby, but alas, nothing but a broken bike.... and I ain't about to hit her.
Perhaps you're right about the wait but I bet your bolt is alot cheaper than a triumph one!!

Good to hear you're OK and I know what you mean about the fist thing.
Bet my bolt isn't. Bet it's about $40. I tried Schroderco too, but they didn't have anything that matched.

Ahh, now I'm with you. Cheers for the tip Sensei, it will be done (tho I might just get the settings and do it myself, got a quality torque wrench and f@ck paying a mechanic $60/hr to do such a simple job)

Torque ,,its a funny ole game No seriously That a sound bit of advice ,,especially for thin walled castings .and bikes that use the cases as a stressed member ...CBR s fall into the above ,,,very easy to warp the cases on those ..
Now Torque wrenches and Torque ...I have a expensive superduper wrench and I use a bendy bar cheapy ..one from repco ..more accurate ...
Now onto torque .... the tourque on a bolt can change widely depending on the state at which it is used ..lubed and un lubed ..even the type of lube used ....so while the manual will say 60 foot lb u could be well under that if the threads are dry and not perfect ...
You can go up to the 90 % proof stress of the nut ...So 10 percent over the manuals recomendation ( on a dry thread, nut and bolt ) wont hurt things you could go 20 percent easily .....
What I do is go 10 percent over and use Loctitie 242 ,,,,( better to overtighten than to under tighten ,,,,( NOT in aluminium ,,,,same rules apply but the proof stress of aluminium is a LOT LESS!!!! )
Engine mounts DO come loose ,,,I have lost one front engine mount this year ...It was tight ,,,I remember clearly ,,,but the things shift ..Metals creep and the nut will fall off,
So a touch of BLUE 242 ,,,fixes that
Nuts and bolts ,,,interesting subject .....
BTW ...HOW much for an indicator thats daylight robbery ...Hope its all sorted now and you are back on the road ...life is dull without a bike .........
Stephen ..
Jim if you are ever quoted 4 weeks and 40 dollars for a bolt Email me I will see what it really costs and the postage takes 5 day door to door oh and cost 1.50 for a letter .....

Any importer is being derelict by not carrying commonly damaged parts, let alone normal service items like a water hose, in NZ. It's has nothing to do with JIT, it's all about these guys keeping their stock figures low.

Cheers Stephen, Agree with using loctite, magic stuff... Although I'm inclined to be weary bout that overtightening, as you say with the aluminium and I hate trying to use easyouts to remove broken bolts (been there many times!)
Before I claimed was gonna go for some of those LED mini indicators or flush mounts..... it's just wrong when you can get a pair of aftermarket indicators for half the price of one factory one!!!
Gonna try to patch it together today.....

Nuts ....and bolts ...Dont worry ,,, There is a good book on the subject ,,,Carrol Shelly , nuts bolts fasteners and plumbing ...very informative read ...I have it in me workshop aind use it when I am working ,,,reminds me of whats what ....
Tou are scard of over tightening because most of our stuff is steel in to Jap butter ,,errr aluminium ,,,and its the proof strength of the aluminium that we are concerned with ,,,AND on older bikes the threads may have been assembled many times ,,,,,ie worn ,,,In this case tread carefully ..( the race bike added a ton of wieght with all the Helicoils I used As the engine comes apart often , :crybaby:
But Steel bolt and a steel nut it will be the nut that will go first ..and the bolt itself will be of a low quality ...
But even after that you can tighten a 13 mm unc nut to something like 40 ft/lb on a clean dry thread ...( thats quite tight !!!!)
Right I must do something ....what with chatting to friends on skype ...and here I is getting nought done !!!

Well, Here's the latest......
Managed to temporarily fix the water (cut it at the slit, then connected the 2 ends with a bit of copper pipe and a couple of hose clamps) worked a treat! :niceone:
Took off for bayride as they wanted to check some stuff for the insurance claim. Everything was going sweet so decided to give it some stick out of the baypark roundabout, got maybe 600 meters when I checked the temp reading and saw it at 100c. About the same time I felt the hot coolant seep thru my jeans. :argh:
Killed the engine and came to a rolling stop with coolant pissing out all over the place. Checked my repair and it was sweet, turned out a steel pipe another water hose connected to has removed itself from the alloy head...WTF??? :brick:
So tow number 2 in 5 days! thank god for AA. Dropped it off at Bayride, booted it and got a ride home with one of the young fullas.... full credit to the guys at bayride, they've been really helpful and understanding....
But I'm gettin really pissed with triumph and this lemon of a bike..... unless I damaged something when i dropped it that's causing the cooling system to over pressurise then I might have to forgive them. :angry2:
Oh and cheers to the guy on the mint blue SV that turned around and came back to check I was alright... Wanna swap bikes???
:niceone:

"Is you're bike a manuel or auto?"
It would have to be a Bultaco or a Montesa to be a Manuel
