The short answer is "Mark Zuckerbot". All these forums are pretty much dead or at least a shadow of their former selves and there is a direct correlation between the rise of Arsebook and the decline of everything else.

Yeah shame eh. We used to organise rides and do all sort of things here, then Facebook came along and we started doing it on there. However, since then Facebook is just bogged down with ads, sponsored posts, posts they think you might like to see etc and friends just seem to have slunk off into no man's land as they are so lost in the mire on your feed.

So I still drop in here regularly to see what's up.

I detest all things facebook and social media and hopefully the old fashioned forums will come back in popularity.

It started off well Bob, but once Zuckerburg and his mates saw the money from advertising and they got greedy it was doomed, and the way it is structured now it is killing it and they'll have to think of another way to make money eventually.

To go out for dinner and see a table of young people together, but not talking to each other, but stuck on their phones telling everyone else they know what a great time they are having is just beyond silly.

One of the best aspects of KB was that someone would post a ride, and anyone who was interested could come along and meet some people.

Now things are arranged in private on 'social' media, so the opportunity for people who don't already know those involved to join in and be social is much less.

Oh the irony.

That is true in some cases, and thankfully the recurring subject of group rides seems to have died a natural death.

In my experience that was the exception and those people were dealt with as required or politely invited not to bother turning up again, however there were a hell of a lot of people who made new friends thanks to an open invitation on KB.

So, it's not really who Ruined Kiwibiker. It is the same place with the same pitfalls but also the same advantage. It's more who Killed Kiwibiker. And that is more clear. I'm still a fan and come here every day. Maybe people will realise the platform is suitable again . Maybe they won't.

We all scoffed when Carver started a similar thread, probably prematurely about 10 years back.

The get togethers were good . The rides got huge and weren't the best idea.

Yep, through KB, some riders I've met have become cherished friends with wider interests than just motorcycles and their whole families have become friends too. In my case, first contact was through a shared interest in a particular bike, living in the same area etc, never group rides. KB has grown up & found its own identity.
All the posers took off to facebook, where posing & self promotion for the secretly insecure is the way.
A lot of the shallow & easily offended left, because. . .the obvious.
A bunch of tired sluts hoping to exchange some worn out pussy for something useful were also weeded out & the PM system often exposed just how worn out the pussy actually was.
It left a group of mainly decent, straight shooting bike enthusiasts, and a few non riders that want to argue international politics that can be poked with a stick occasinally for some personal amusement.
Its probably the best its ever been about now.

Been here well over 16 years myself and still check in but miss the events we used to have down here which included the group rides and the occasional lunches in Wellington. Some of the lunches had 15 or so attend, but it did all evaporate with the arrival of Facebook a few years later.

I still pop by but given I'm still coming back after a big crash (another op a week ago) I'm not riding so the passion isn't at the forefront.

Other projects take up a lot of my time.

I have a full on band again (mister unit) and restoring my Katana and staring at my Vertemati until my reconstructed ankle is good enough to kick it over again take up a lot of time. Yeah, Facebook eats a lot of time too.

But mostly I've taken to educating myself with mechanical and electronic engineering stuff so I can fix my bikes better and build guitar amps is taking time away from winding up people on KB.

Nice to see some familiar names when I log on every three or four days. I just don't feel the need to spout off like I used to. You've all heard it before anyway. :)

So out of interest , at what point does a penis become worn out? Should I be checking with a vernier?
Or is there some sort of virgin-whore double standard in place here?

Been here 15 years but the last few years only in the GP thread. I'm 3 pages into this thread because I don't come out here often.
I made lots of friends here, road and dirt to the point we had dirt division t shirts and flags made up and met up most rides and road dirt together frequently.
Made a few road riding friends (still have them) and we did stuff like a collection to get Katiepie's bike back on the road after her bad prang.
There where lots of female members here a few years ago.
It was a good place with sensible discussion on bike related matters 95% of the time.

Then Kiwibiker killed itself TBH.
The mods didn't kick out the fuckwits and it was quite crazy here for quite a spell.
The threads where full of bullshit and conflict for the sake of conflict. It seemed thats how they wanted the place to be?
People like Crasher and others got sick of it and left
People like me set their shortcut to their settings page and only looked at the subscribed threads.
Like MotoGP thread, Jokes or ESE thread and very rarely checked the New Posts, General ravings threads etc.
People like WINJA, IdoIIdolIdyll and crasher added colour, it didn't get personal as it did for quite a spell there.
We even tolerated twits Like Akzle who I don't think even had a bloody motorbike???
Maha, Mom, Caseye, Caveweta, Ocean1, DMNTD, Mossy1200, MSTRS, Frosty, Kiwifruit and many more, could generally give and take a bit of stick without being keyboard warriors.

So we have what we have now a few old timers wondering why they don't read interesting threads on bikes and bike Issues.
Because all of the semi sane members got shitted off with the insanity LOL.
Just My 2c ???

Seems to me that this place is overly represented with boomers who are one cock dribble away from adult nappies and sucking porridge though a straw at the rest home. For fucks sake, its not the 1970's anymore.

It happens on all the boards, the toxification and general cuntifying of forums. I think they have a useby date and for those that had the pleasure of the board when it was fresh and fun before the oldies stole it are lucky.

IMHO That tone was allowed to propagate then become entrenched by admins taking too a very liberal view of what was “healthy debate”.

Most of my riding mates communicate via whatsapp or messenger re meeting, questions about bikes and rides etc but its a bubble and it has limitations. The beauty of an open forum is a free exchange of ideas and the testing of them, so if you ask a question then eventually you'll get a pretty good answer. Usually the shitfights are in the off topic sections where there is an intergenerational division or polarised opinions on politics especially. You cant win an internet argument, and to most peoples absolute shock and horror if they meet up with their online adversaries they tend to be pretty decent people (however confused)

One of the upsides of "all the boomers" is that you have people who are immensely experienced in all facets of the enterprise - we've got world famous engine builders, people who race internationally and run teams internationally, experienced racers. Generally they are really good guys who if you ask for advice will tell you "stop dithering and buy it, life is short". My point is that they can be a very good resource - and generally they're very willing to share their knowledge. Good example being that ESE thread. I dont read it that often because I understand every eighth word. But clearly these dudes know their shit.

Apart from the Motogp threads I don't really visit much on here, never did really as I found that enough. Bloody hell - October 2002, time flies when you're having fun! Had forgotten how long I'd been a member. At the time of joining, I had a Blackbird (no surprises there) and there were several other 'bird riders on it and it was a great way to share info, especially setting up the suspension properly and other mods. That led to some lasting friendships, even though all but one of the Blackbirds have long gone. I generally log in 3 or 4 times a week to see if anything interesting is going on but don't post a lot. I still happen to think it's an extremely valuable site though, particularly to draw on the collective wisdom of everyone when there's a problem to be solved.

I use Facebook a fair bit because as quite a few people know, I'm a Central North Island Mentor/Examiner with the NZ branch of the UK Institute of Advanced Motorists and we have dedicated pages for the various regions of IAM in NZ. Facebook is a handy tool for that sort of use to get info out to members. Horses for courses....

Hahahaha! Does that make us sad bastards or old and wise? (No need for anyone to answer that ) . It's Friday evening so I'll raise a glass to us all

I remember briefly meeting SpankMe just after KB started. A mate and I were at Kawhia when SpankMe and some of his mates rocked up. I think he had a blue SV 650 or 1000 and I think there was a French Canadian on a Ducati Monster with a lot of carbon parts. I think he was a KB'er too. Got some photos somewhere - must dig them out.

I'm a March 2003 joining baby and before spotting this site I had spent a few years on the old USA site Motorcycle Online which is now long gone I think and also on the old Ulysses Club discussion site.

This site was quite a new whizz bang form of a forum compared to the others I was using at the time and grew quite fast allowing us to meet a lot of like minded people and as I mentioned earlier in this thread that meant we had quite a lot of social interaction in Wellington initially until it faded.

I bought the T-shirts (road and dirt) and the stickers to put on my bikes and enjoyed the company.

Good post and yeah, I normally log in, check my settings page, maybe look at new posts and log out again...

What happens is a few old hands think they own/run the place and set the culture. Newcomers are viewed as threats and attacked if they poke their head above the parapets.

Hey, that's a lie - it IS the 1970's still!:bleh:

I got sick of this site because of all the moaning and same old same old. (someone didn't wave to me ! Warning, warning, unmarked roadworks !) With computer and browser changes the link got buried and good riddance. Another browser change (Brave) and I can find it again...if I want. I looked here after years away to see a post about an old bike of mine....and come back to see if the thread has been updated.

I've never been social, and turning antisocial as I get older...out and about, just me and the bike is what I love. Ride a 50cc scooter everyday and make sure I wave to the sportsbikes. As a Boomer who was too much of a hippy to jump on the gravytrain, I'm still working full time, go to lots of funerals, and visit old Auckland friends who retire to the country with 7 figures and change. Thinking I should cut down to 2 days at work....then I could do 2 days at where I worked a few years ago to help him out, and then another couple of days at a mates place. That'd give me a whole day to work on my own bikes, the kids cars, my own cars... I haven't got time to retire yet.

Don't have a bike of my own any more due to the combined effects of redundancy last year and riding a bike 5 days a week in my new job. 7 pages and no mention of rego hikes? I remember a newspaper article a couple years after the rego went up stating new motorcycle registrations had dropped by over 50%.

I highly doubt if FB has anything to do with the lack of activity on this site. I joined a few groups trying to replicate what KBs "Meeting and events' forum was 10 years ago. Go back 10 years to that forum, there's 2-4 new threads a DAY organising events etc. Now? Nothing.

I think what really killed it is the ridiculous rego hikes which shooed away a lot of people who would've bought small displacement / LAMs (had it existed back then) bikes to use as a means of transportation and gotten into the hobby that way. >$400 for a small bike and close to $600 for >600 cc for a year? That's crazy money.

Edit: Really bums me out the way things have panned out when I think about all the kind souls I met over the years getting into riding.

It's been noted on forums across the 'net that participation dropped off after FB gained traction. A lot of prolific members here are now on FB posting up rides instead on KB because it only goes to those that they want it to go to. Direct marketing in a way ha.

Since then I've made many good friends, mainly but not all, through the KB South Island rallies, all of which I attended except the first one, starting at the

Coachman? in North Canty through to the Nelson one just before I left NZ to live in the Philippines. I also went to most other S. I. rallies; sadly never made it

to Woodstock, although it's one of my son's favourites.

Most of the bikes here are scooters or underbones; anything over 400cc is called a 'big bike'. My personal transport is a Suzuki Smash... 115cc, but I seldom

venture out of the city, so it suits me fine. Horses for courses and all that.

Just My 2c ???

my fave WINJA memory. I was ~17 still living at home and asked if anyone could weld up a broken bracket for my 1st bike ('85 GPZ1000R) WINJA sent me some flux and brazing rods, free of charge, addressed to "big faggot" from the "arse ticklers society" (note this was a 15 years ago, could have the wording wrong, but you get the gist) my mum got the letter and awkward questions were to be had, as to why (at that time) I'd never had a Girlfriend and wore leather all the time....

I was 18 and working at Pak'n'save. He turned up to say hi, told me I should be scraping the pegs on my NSR250 and warned me that if I stayed in Thames, I'd end up fucking the 60 year old deli clerk.

Still here from time to time, despite some best efforts from a select few in previous times to change that.

KB is the only reason I was ever able to continue riding (and some people within this thread), and some of the only people I have kept in touch with from time to time in the biking world.

Facebook abuse, cyber bullying and even being told by dozens of people I should have died made me withdraw from the entire biking world, and even a few PM's on here - not to mention a thread about how I was nothing more than a girl people would not ACTUALLY care about, rather than want to fuck. Lets just say it's taken me years to learn how to come through the 4 years of crap that I got, some of it self inflicted I now understand that.

Both online worlds have changed. But KB will always be the place I have met some of the most fucking amazing humans in my life, given me hope at times, led me to people who have picked up the phone when I've been close to the edge to tell me to get out of bed, keep going... that I matter.

FB, shut down my personal profile years ago, started an alias one where I now solely network with connections around the world for various reasons, and I block most people who find me who know me from my past life - whether I like them or not. I made a decision to start a new life, and on occasions it now includes KB.

Grateful to all it was at times many years ago, and all it taught me in the real world with connections too.

The R6 has finally just died too - after fighting with all I had for many years to hold onto it. So no riding in my near future.... for now. But when I come back - I'll be fucking back with such a grin, holding a middle finger up to the world at the same time.

Nice to see some old faces / names in here again. I check in from time to time. Life is bloody amazing now, living in the real world and keeping most humans at a distance until I can learn to handle that side of things again.

Sorry, what I MEANT to say was hi to a few old contacts and friends. I do miss the times when KB was active with some good debates, help and info for those needing it, and meeting people from here in person out on the road.

Millenials are up to about forty years old now, they long since ceased to be kids. The oldest among them start turning forty in 2020 which is only a couple of weeks away. The youngest will turn 20.

It would not seem unreasonable to assume there are KBers between twenty and forty years old.

 good point not sure what you call the ones born after 2000 but most of'm think they're entitled, while our kids are between 43 & 23 they were brought up old school :Punk:

Probably most of the people I know in meatspace who are on this site are millenials now I think about it. So young, but in their 30s now. Not sure what that means. I'm not getting older surely.

There was a great North and South cover with a scared millenial hiding under the covers in a living at home article. Heck my kids are gen Z but next is gen alpha.

Jesus titty fucking christ, listen to you lot. Judging away as though you've mastered life and all that surrounds you.

There's so much irony I'm choking.

We've all clearly lost our way since you eased back on posting so many pearls of wisdom on here as you used to Drew.

Have you given up sidecar racing too because I was wondering who we should have been supporting otherwise at the Suzuki series?

First visit back in 3 years. I went looking for my old ride stories, had to dive into the archives. Photobucket has locked all the images I used to post to the stories. , I recognize some names,
Rode for 48 years, sold the last bike August 2016, and haven't ridden since. Still look at motorbikes when they go past, but I have never had the inclination to get on one again. I miss the roads, and mates i rode with but, grandkids, photography (bloody near as costly as motorcycling) take my time now.

Yes, came here originally for the Racing Thread. Riding 55 yrs now, but in the last gasp really.
Thinking a big naked bike, may extend it a bit ?

If not, the wife said by a Lotus or something to keep amused ? lol

Sounds pretty much the same as me! Riding for 54 years, minus a short spell when we moved to NZ in '75. Stuffed knees and getting older but still wanting performance led me to buy the Duke 790 in March. The light weight and ergonomics makes it a dream to ride. I also thought about a Lotus 7 replica for when I give up bikes. However, my wife had a MazdaSpeed-prepared MX-5 for a few years which was fun to drive on the odd occasion but it could never replace a bike. We've got a Stabicraft for sea fishing and in reality, I think that will be my fall-back interest when I flag bikes.

Hope that I can keep riding for a while yet. I had an eye operation for a badly torn retina on Monday and I'm not allowed to drive for a couple of weeks. Really hoping to get full use of both eyes back or giving up bikes might be sooner than I planned!

Millennials (it's happening everywhere. And they will be the ones most effective come next election)and those threads raving on and on and on and on and on about nothing really.

I would like to filter those out.

I use the ignore function. Which works well.
Just not for those threads I find rather boring and mundane.

That's just how I feel.

People get turned off by the negative BS.

They want to be part of a positive active group. Ok there can be a bit of leg pulling etc that's all part of it.
