How to remove the lock from my petrol tank.

As you may have read, I lost the key to my RG :Oops: I managed to get another copy off another RG owner but it only half works. It will turn on my ignition but not put on the steering lock. It will unlock my seat but not my petrol tank :stupid:

I was wondering if I just undo the alan key nuts around my petrol tank opening if it will come off. Obviously this is the least used lock and so the least worn and probably the one I want to get the new key cut for (by a locksmith)

Any ideas?

cheapest solution--take the tank to a locksmith --have em cut a key to the tank lock

Try taking the whole thing off, but it will depend on where the cap actually hinges to.

Your probably looking at $35 to have a new key cut at a locksmith without a code, but if you can find out where the code is (prob the ignition barrel somewhere) it's just the key cut cost.

hmm intresting problem. ive had some similar troubles with mine (fixed with a can of CRC down the hole)

you could perhaps see if you can get a second petrol cap from a wrecker that comes with a key and just keep two keys on the ring

Ive noticed I just leave my cap unlocked all the time these days accidentally anyway.

Bugga...Try and take the whole cap off but if you cant take the tank in.

I will see if I can get to the ignition barrel somehow... Thats interesting. I didnt know that you just needed the number off the barrel to cut a key.

I will see what is easiest to get off.

I will let you guys know how I go.

I will have to get 2 keys I think when I finally get this sorted :stupid:

When I got my bucket it had a lock on the tank cap and no keys with it, had already been half turned into a racer so there was no need for keys for anything else. Was a major pain in the arse to get off. I drilled the lock out, tried to screwdriver it, but all to no avail. In the end i got a crow bar and had to lever it off, made a few dents in the tank but they blended in pretty well to the others. I doubt you'd be able to use that method cause it would damage it. I'd recommend going to a locksmith to get it done aye. They might even be able to do a new key for your whole bike.

First thing I do when i get a new car/bike is get a 2nd key cut.

k14 truth is I normally get a new key first thing too.

Just not this time... live and learn.

I will probably end up taking my whole tank off and just taking it down to the the locksmiths and asking them how much it will cost to get it all done by them.

Just have to see how much they want to charge me :whistle:

If it's road worthy and has enough petrol still, you can ride it to a locksmith shop and some Locksmiths even come to you.
Got insurance on it? It might be covered without impacting on your no claims discount.
