If you have a decent back protector it should have one built in. Its usually a widish strap that comes mostly around your waist.

Your ribs protect your heart and lungs, but the kidneys and liver are not protected. If you get a fairly hard wack there (perhaps catching a handlebar in the tummy), it can do a lot of serious damage.

I think they are standard on dirt bike equip are they not ?

Sever pain: phrase; Badness. Probably often fatal. Best avoided, especially when to the kidneys.

The kidney belt also helps support your lower back and keeps it straighter, meaning less pain if you have a bad back.

This would be the most USED instance of it.
But it's main PURPOSE is to protect you kidneys more in a crash.
You know how much a kidney punch hurts. No imaging a handle bar doing it at 100K/h.
But as mentioned above, some gear come with it built in, in some form

I remember reading in the early 80's that professional MX'ers rode so hard through a 40 minute race that their kidneys bleed. The belt offers some needed surport to an area of the body that needs it.

I've got a Fox road-going kidney belt and always use it on anything more than a short run. As the other guys said, you're hugely more comfortable as your insides don't get shaken about - a likely scenario with stiff suspension and bumpy roads. It also gives additional warmth on a cool day.

I remember as a kid watching scrambles in the 60s - the riders all wore football jerseys and a big kidney belt,rough riding on bikes with limited suspension was tough on the body.One of the first things I got when I started off road was a kidney belt,and used it on the road on longer rides - it lasted 20 yrs and now I need to get another one....got one with my armour,but want a seperate one too.

mt armour has one for impacts such as crashes but it doesnt really offer any support like one with a big belt would is it worth getting one for offroad riding. i would say i am a fairly quick rider.

Definitely worth getting one. My order of getting safety equipment would be

boots
goggles
gloves
kidney belt
pants
body armour
shirt

all at the same time if you can swing it though
