Drz400sm vs drz400e ? What to do fellas ?

Yo what’s up guys I’m new to the motard / road bike scene done a bit of MX in my younger days ( 10 y/o - 18 y/o ) 26 y/o now and looking at getting a bike for commuting and obviously some small jumps / wheelies for the lols

To be honest from what I’ve read the DRZ seems to be the go reliability and aftermarket mods wise

I know that the 400SM lacks in power from what I have read and the E model is the better choice in terms of carb / cams

I guess what I’m trying to say is ... do I go with the E and get some moto wheels or do I go with the SM and do the engine mods , which is going to be the better option ? I’m having a real hard time here with this decision so please jump in and help lads

Ps I am considering wr450f and ktm exc range but reliability / price I think drz is better suited ? Looking at spending between 6-9k NZD

As I understand it, there is quite a bit required to bring a 400S engine up to 400E spec.

I think swapping out the wheels is easier.

Or just put good rubber on the standard wheels.

Aesthetically the SM is more pleasing but yeah it does sound cheaper to go with an E based on the fact the SM would need a bit of mods

having done both conversions on either bike and owning all 3 types of DRZ400 at some point, i'd just buy a brand new E model and buy some warp9 or similar cheapy sumo rims, buy an OEM SM front wheel speedo block (~$80 new or get from a wrecked one) jobs a good'n

great bikes, I keep thinking of getting another just for the fact you dont worry about dropping and so easy to fix/replace parts and lots of parts out there ! really hope the bike gets added to the NO NEED FOR ABS compliance coming up mid year else its the last year for any new DRZ!

have been tempted to buy a superdual X but iffy parts/engine support post purchase and higher maintenance schedge vs jap/austrian bikes put me off

That's a lot of bike for the money...personally the styling isn't quite to my liking. I would be interested in knowing from any experts here what the build quality was like prior to KTM ownership. BMW have always had a good focus on quality, so would expect that older bikes were more solid, but less performance oriented. Shift to KTM would have seen a much more aggressive focus but perhaps at the cost of long term reliability? That said, as a KTM owner, I am very impressed with the reliability and quality and my 2017 Husky FS701 is outstanding.

Build quality as in the engine?

Well I picked up an '09 SM610 at the start of the year. 30,000km on it for $4400 and it's a great bike. It's a fairly lumpy engine, think midway between a 450 MX'er and 690/710 but it's had all the power up mods done to it and it's a riot. I wasn't gonna pass up a deal like that. Other than a cracked fairing the bike is in great condition. Annoyingly no one makes an aftermarket set of plastics so I'd have to buy straight from Husqvarna and it'd cost an arm and a leg.

The 630 as I understand has the larger engine at 600cc where the 610 is a 576cc (why do they do that?). The 630 apparently makes a little more power but with the dual pipe setup it weighs a little more so that extra power means jack.

If I hadn't purchased the 610 and that 630 came up I would've grabbed it in a heartbeat. That's a steal with only 4,000k on it.
