If the virus actually arrives, I'll make a mutual arrangement with some of the neighbours.

We have a good supply of food anyway but when I went into Coromandel village this morning to get some odds and sods, there was absolutely no sign of panic buying and plenty of stock. I tried to do on line purchases through Countdown yesterday and failed dismally. We have major supplies delivered from Whitianga on a monthly basis as it's cheaper than driving over there but when it came to choosing a delivery timeframe on their website, it wouldn't work. No big deal at present.

In great news, my wife arrives from the UK early tomorrow morning and I'm heading to Auckland later today. She's just landed in Doha. Unlike some airlines or their agents, Qatar Air have continued to be a joy to deal with. Business class one way from UK $3650 which was fine, as opposed to $9700 as the top extortion attempt we encountered.

There was a notice that they are having trouble meeting delivery times due the upsurge in demand for the service. That may have impacted your effort to select a date.

I've never tried online ordering but it's likely to happen in the near future. I'm going to have to order more than the $30.00 odd I usually buy though. I don't normally buy fish, meat, or wine at Countdown.

A fact is though, that 99.9% of the Italian population are still fine & dandy.
One person in Tauranga has tested positive at this point. Of all the illnesses people have in Tauranga, there is currently no illness that is affecting less of the population.

Ron,
We do a monthly or thereabouts shop. Delivery costs about $6 for orders over $400 if I remember correctly. I hate grocery shopping combined with the travel time so it's a no brainer. We buy our meat, fruit and veggies in the village.

There’s also a whole lot of countries out there that I’ve never been to. I’ve never been into space either, for all I know all this solar system stuff is just bs.

Trump's reference to Chloroquine is absurd. Dr Fauci will be disappearing from view if he corrects Trump like that, and he's one of the few on Team Trump with any clues. The US has more of a history with Malaria than we do but even so, it's hard to imagine they are holding huge stocks.

In the late 60s a group of people arrived in NZ and developed Malaria, there was insufficient Chloroquine to treat them all. There may be stocks in NZ to treat a few cases but probably not a large number.

Similar or possibly the same, the references are a bit confusing hydroxychloroquine can apparently be used to treat chloroquine resistant malaria? Chloroquine is used to treat arthritis and lupus so we need a chemist. There is also mention of it being trialled for Corona virus but as the doctor said it would be dangerous to say it’s available as a treatment.

Mention is made of it being taken by mouth but how the doses compare is a mystery.

There are a number of different quinine salts that can be used to treat malaria such as quinine dihydrochloride or quinine bisuplhate. Quinine is used as an an anti-malarial and it works by interfering with haeme biosynthesis in our red blood cells, which the malarial parasite uses as part of its infection cycle.

Chloroquine (and hydrochloroquine suphate is a salt of this) is a similar but molecularly distinct drug that were developed to help reduce the side-effects of quinine-based drugs. They essentially do the same thing. One of the major side-effects of both drugs is anaemia (cause by loss of haeme). Chloroquine is also somewhat immunosuppressive which is why it can be prescribed for autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

I would treat any anti-Covid19 claims with caution as the current studies (and the previous SARS ones) have simply shown that it kills virus sitting in a dish, which is worlds away from being effective in people. To put this in context, put ethanol on a virus and it will kill it but prescribing single malt is unlikely to prevent infection.

Hopefully clinical trials are in progress as the immunosuppressive effects of Chloroquine may be useful in preventing sepsis during pneumonia.

https://thespinoff.co.nz/science/21-03-2020/could-pre-existing-drugs-work-for-covid-19-nz-experts-weigh-in/

Dr Christopher Gale, senior lecturer at the Department of Psychological Medicine, University of Otago
There are a fair number of “cures” for Covid-19 being mentioned in social media and by various public figures. This is normal human behaviour: people will try to do whatever they can to stay well and be able to care for their families and friends. However, there is very little data behind these claims.

The final drug in this repurposed grouping is in the “other” category. It is called chloroquine. Chloroquine is an antimalarial drug, long in use, especially in travel medicine. It turns out that it inhibits SARS2-CoV replication in the test tube and it has garnered wide attention because of it. Physicians are keen to learn if this observation could be translated into success in living humans. A cautionary note is that chloroquine has been looked at before with other viruses and has not been found to be effective.

Protease inhibitors are a major drug class in use against HIV. For HIV they work by blocking an enzyme that processes proteins that the virus needs for growth. During the Sars epidemic it was discovered that Kaletra (lopinavir/ritonavir), a common anti-HIV drug, seemed to help coronavirus-infected patients. Early data on its use for coronavirus infection suggests weak to no activity, but it was an early study with small patient numbers.

There is a modest wine cellar here but a sad lack of single malt. YouTube's Ralfy gives some good recommendations, so I will hunt one down. Only for the antiseptic qualities of course...

According to TV1 one of the local iwi were making hand sanitiser and handing it out to their elderly. They were using vodka and aloe vera. Apparently to be effective the alcohol needs to be 60%, normal vodka is about 40% so is not suitable for hand sanitiser. Since their effort was shown on TV, I hope someone told them the news.

It verges on sad and hilarious how little you lot seem to know.

The malaria drug Trump was going on about has been widely used in China (if you can believe them because they are full of shit on everything else) they've tested it on thousands of people and claim it works (the japanese version of the drug mixed with something else).

The chinese have also from practically day dot when they finally started going after the virus 2 months after it was getting around tested practically every drug in existance on their own people in clinical trials. Probably tens of thousands of different drugs.

Anyway im here to tell you lot CHINA LIED and continues to do so.

7 million + infected just in Wuhan and 200k+ dead and that was a month ago!

Wake up.

Very good post. Naturally a big who knows on the actual numbers, but likely very, very high.

So now you'd like to know if that was abusive?
What a nupty.

I would imagine that you're used to abusive responses given the drivel you post.

Do you have any opinions of your own?

I see that the World Bank has finally leapt into action (?)

https://www.thenational.ae/world/europe/world-bank-moving-forward-on-first-1-7bn-in-pandemic-aid-projects-1.995946

But only US$1.7 billion out of a total amount of US$14 billion set aside ? Why such a small amount ?

"To help countries deal with health and economic effects of the coronavirus." (?)

Look, if you meant "... to make soft loans to project creditors in countries of US geo-political interest", then why didn't you just say so ? .... you didn't need to try and dress it up ... we can all read between the lines.

But if you do still have a few dollars spare, perhaps you could help Don fund the CDC? He seems to be struggling.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/10/coronavirus-testing-delays-caused-in-part-by-underfunding-cdc-director-says.html

It seems that U.S. preparedness to deal with the threat of COVID-19 was hampered by personnel and budget cuts made over the past three years. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has experienced a 30 percent funding cut since 2003, despite an increased number of public health emergencies over the intervening years.

In its 2020 budget, the administration proposed a further 10 percent cut in CDC funding (equivalent to about $750 million). It eliminated funding for epidemiology and laboratory capacity at state and local levels. The funding cuts have also forced the CDC to reduce or discontinue epidemic-prevention efforts in 39 of the 49 countries that it had been helping.

And until February 26, there was no one in the White House tasked specifically with overseeing a coordinated government-wide response in the event of a pandemic. The post of senior director for global health security and bio-threats on the National Security Council was eliminated in May 2019, as global health issues were not considered to be a “national security” priority.

Though with the new US COVID 19 response team - being led by VP Mike Pence and Alex Azar (former lobbyist for pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly), I'm sure that all will be in good hands. Though strangely enough, it's always Don still fronting the news interviews.

Dropping off orders from our online business at the local FarmSource store (NZ Couriers agent) earlier this arvo. The place was humming with locals stocking up on farm supplies including one character who was there in his classic rag-top Morgan and drove off with a big sack of dog biscuits laid across the bonnet (cabin full?). Shame I didn't have my phone on me for a photo of it

Yeah I worked at Farm supply place today, the place was off the chain busy. Lady singled out one regular who was there had bought 1 more of everything he usually bought, it's one of those 1000 cuts things and not just the hoarders that are causing the issues though.

Hoarders are fucked in the head though

Yes, the end of times. Sat at a junction earlier watching a swarm of folk at the grog shop across the road, I watched a woman try to unlock her car whilst holding at least 6 big bottles of vodka. I estimate she dropped 3 of them... I lolled.

So from Wednesday we are told to stay home..but are told supermarkets and petrol stations will still be running for us. So does that mean we DON'T have to stay at home..else how can we do the supermarket shop and topup the bike with petrol?

Most of what you will need to know will likely be on the Covid 19 website e.g.

https://covid19.govt.nz/help-and-advice/for-travellers/public-transport/

Think the important words were "don't go out unnecessarily". So, if you need food or petrol, then go top up when you need to. But avoid panic buying.

Authorities are simply asking that you limit trips out. If you're cooped up at home (even if self-isolating), that doesn't mean you can't get food and petrol (just seek to maintain the 2 metre distance when doing so). Same goes for a walk in the nearest park or to take the dog for a walk.

Wife got 1 bottle of Jim Beam...

That's my usual weekly allowance, even in Soviet Russia they never had to ration vodka!

In all seriousness stay safe KBers, stay at home if you don't need to go anywhere, if you need to go somewhere go to a big open space like a beach and stay the fuck away from anyone you aren't isolating with. Be extra careful at the supermarket etc. We can stomp this bitch out in 4 weeks if we are smart.

Nope, that just confirms you don't know how to apply common sense, so Bonez's advice to you was wasted.

The advice I've seen says vodka is much too low in alcohol to be used as hand sanitiser. So is whisky. Don't waste it, drink it.

The TV people seemed almost excited that Scot Morrison invoked the spirt of the ANZACs. Australians view ANZAC differently to us. It would be news to many, probably including ScoMO, that NZ has anything at all to do with ANZAC. They see it as an entirely Australian thing.
