Hey Ya'll,

I've been wading through the threads, looking for an answer to "Where in Auckland should I go and buy all my stuff?".

I am about to buy a new bike and all my old gear is gone... so I'm buying helmets, jackets, pants, boots, gloves, bling, yada yada... (Cruising / commuting gear)

I would dearly love to walk into a store in Auckland, wander around with the trustworthy, experienced retail person, get schooled on the right stuff for me & my budget, and then swipe my card and walk away a whole lot poorer. ...maybe even with a discount for buying so much stuff.

...but I get the feeling it's just not that easy and I have to go buy a quick lid, then research on the web and ride around the dozen or so shops once or twice.

If you were going to walk into 1 shop in Auckland to kit out a couple of good looking cats, where would you go!?

edit: Clear answer here, with 7 positive votes and 1 negative is.... Motomail!
(also lots of good reviews on the google and a pretty good e-store)

It's a few years since I've been based in Auckland but Motomail were pretty good last time I used them. They had a good choice and the person I dealt with seemed to be fairly clued-up about their gear. Up on College Hill if memory serves. :2thumbsup

Motomail on College Hill.
Or Barry's Point Rd has a few bike shops, Cycletreads being one of those worth a visit.

Thx team.
There's a couple of obvious omissions so far which is helpful ;)
I read a few people (here) saying that Motomail was particularly expensive.

Barry's Point Rd is certainly the boulevard of bikes - spoilt for choice.

For riding gear, Motomail is hard to beat as a one-stop-shop.

For a bike, Barrys Point Rd is where I'd be starting.

you may jest but harley riders do spend money so they are well stocked with stuff.
helmets will be more matt black than bright and the riding apparal will be harley franchised and heavily orientated to leather so not really the best selection

The staff are good, they certainly make an effort to help unlike some other places I can think of.

How much is a return flight to Straya this week? If you are buying all that gear it might be worth pricing a trip given the discounts some airlines are offering due to the chicken flu.

Went to Motomail, bought a couple of helmets, some gloves, and maybe some other malarkey.

Here's my 2c:
Sales guy was attentive, patient, knowledgeable, not pushy.
Sales guy was more interested in helping us get the right stuff for us than selling the highest price stuff possible
Really good range of stuff and a clearance area downstairs for bargain hunters!

Couldn't get any better than the standard loyalty program ($5 credit for every $100 spent, not 10%). I only spent $700 so not exactly waving around wads of cash. Discounts are nice, but the good quality, trusted salesperson stuff is priceless!

Definitely my best experience in a bike shop, and I'll be going back for more (after I buy my new-to-me bike today). :scooter:

Yep, always been like that when we've been there, taking an absolute Newbie there today to get his first gear, should be fun.

Speaking of Auckland stores, Carbon Garage, called in there once, was genuinely interested in a bike they had for sale, my god, I will NEVER go back there again, was treated like an absolute scum bag, hey I might have tattoos and look a bit scruffy but holy hell, every prick in there, including other customers sitting there having there Sunday coffee pretty much treated me like shit, the chick that was working there pretty much told be to stop looking at the bikes and bugger off.

And now you know why as well. They are good people doing a good job. As for prices, well that's a subjective discussion.

I've always preferred motor mail especially when you need to get the whole kitout done. Other shops i.e. and Barrys Point Road like cycle treads hole shot etc but only really great if you need to get one or two things because their customer service isn't as good as motomail:Punk:

I'm a self proclaimed motorcycle newbie and natural introvert so places with pushy staff and egos generally scare me away quickly.

Motomail, when I walked in I was left alone long enough to have a look at several of the products before I was approached by a staff member which was nice as it was my first time in a motorcycle shop. The gent who helped me was super patient with me, I tired on at least 25 pieces of gear as I didn't know what I was really looking for, he guided me towards 3 season gear that fits and I liked the styling. I found the pricing pretty fair as well.
So far I've picked up 2x helmets, 1x jacket, 2x gloves, 1x boots, 1x pants and some other bits and pieces from these guys.

Cyclespot(s) on the northshore, I found the staff great with motorcycles but when it comes to gear they didn't seem too helpful, almost like they are paid on commission.
Each of the stores (4? of them on that road) had their own selection of gear so it's hard to find the right bits and pieces that I wanted in one place. I can't comment on pricing as I didn't hang out too long.
So far, I've found a bike or two I would like to try/buy if they are still there when I get my full licence.

Boyds(in Hamilton), I ordered some boots from them over the lock-down and the arrived 1st week of level 3 which made me super happy, I was in email contact with the staff there about sizing and returns and were happy to exchange or refund if I didn't like them. I love my new BOOTS! :D
I also dropped into the store on the first weekend of level 2, I was looking to buy a tank bag/bike cover/back protector but didn't buy any because of how busy it was, I can't say the staff were 'helpful' but it was the first weekend open after lock-down it was busy and there were safety process in place so it's unfair to judge them atm. Pricing seemed on par, they do have good specials from time to time.

I would be happy to try at other places in Auckland if I could find them.

Your experience echoes mine. I've found Barry's Point Road shops are great when you're looking to spend a lot of money. For the smaller items they are generally less attentive. I will add that's just my experience and not all the shops are the same.

As for Motomail - Yep they have been very good in my experience. It's always better when a shop specialises in biking gear and they can give you worthwhile advice. :niceone:
