At first I was dubious. The best you say? So I watched, my interest built, now my jaw sits on the floor as I'm captivated by their work. Sharing it with all I know will appreciate it.

Harry's Garage is one of the channels I thought was the best. Thankfully I don't have to relegate him as they offer different content.

Harry's awesome too. Probably the best car review channel on YouTube. I LOOOOVE his Lancia Fulvia too. I like Doug Demuro, but he's a bit formulaic and doesn't leave you with a good insight into what it's actually like to drive what we're looking at.

One of the guys at work drops regular cash on Project Binky via Patreon. He has quite a bit spare and is a nice person and wants people to succeed. Bit of a weirdo, really.

Project Binky has a side project that includes turning a truck thing into a car transporter and putting a decent engine in it and stuff. Check that out too.

It's a great series, one of the best and I've introduced a few to it now. Common thoughts are it really is about how to build a fast car from scratch that looks like a mini using only a mini roof. That in no way is a criticism, I know fuck all about fabrication, but I know enough to recognise these guys are something else. It's a combination of amazing skills, know how, math and artistry. I want to binge watch them but like eating a perfectly cooked steak I'm taking my time.

The answer is, "Because he can."

So, just putting it out there. Wouldn't it just ge a fuck ton easier to build a space frame, sort of ike a wide 750F1, then drop a mini shape cover over the top? Guess you would have to lift your leg way up to get over the door area, but its got to be easier, lighter and stronger. Is it the door compromise that holds cars back? Guess they make stock cars a bit like that?

His car featured on TV being driven by the presenters as part of a UK TV series called Car SOS. It's on the National Geographic Channel over there - don't know whether the series is on in NZ. I've got a bit of a soft spot for the Imp and thought that the restoration/upgrade job they did on an old rustbucket was quite interesting, especially the press shop that makes custom panels for just about anything. Converting it to motorcycle fuel injection looked pretty straightforward too. This is the programme: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7t30c3 .

Crikey, this lockdown is responsible for some entertaining threads.

When I was little (awwww) my dad had a Hillman Imp, pale blue. He would cram in the family and drive from north of Newcastle to Cornwall for our hols every year. Not sure what he did to it but it went like stink and was very good at Production Car Trials. I was chief bouncer.

Somewhere in the mix he had a Mini Traveller, that went like a cut cat, too. He would race anyone who looked at him twice. Even on the grocery run.

At some point a Magenta turned up. This is he.

The Mk 1 Imps had head gasket problems which was improved with the mk II (straight edge) block. I wonder if a root cause of the gasket problem was that the head was supposed to be retorqued at the cars first service. However that required removal of the cam and cam follower carrier to get at the head bolts, and there was not all that much room between the top of the engine and the rear parcel shelf, so maybe it didn't always get done.

And while looking for something else in the shed today, found an ice-cream container of the Imp Sport valves and valve springs off an engine that I (tried to) modify, Had the Sport exhaust extractors and twin 1 1/4" Strombergs. Hunter resonator for a muffler. Also put the radiator in the spare wheel well in the front. At the time I liked to think I improved it.

I always use cardboard and if required then the plywood version follows so you can try it out with limited stress.

Here's one from like 3 weeks ago mounting an aftermarket chain guide on the dirtbike. Getting it in the right place for adjustments over wheel movements and to not drag too heavily took several iterations of holes. Then final in ally plate. Would have been a killer doing it in metal every time.

Its actually 3 varying thickness pieces of plate bolted together to make it thick enough and central to chain run hence the sprocket appears to travel through the plate.

It has other downsides as BSA found out in the 50s.

Steel, if it were discovered today would be considered a 'Wonder' material. Its elastic deformation far outperforms most other metals meaning it is less prone to cracking.

I decided to become a patron of Bad Obsession/Project Binky. Anybody that gives me as much enjoyment as those guys have well deserves my $2USD a month. Especially if they can make hot rodding that truck interesting. Talk about your "built like a brick shithouse" Trev.

After a marathon Project Binky session one day, I remarked to my wife, imagine what that would have cost to get out on VHS, I think I should give these blokes a few bucks.

The other thing is that its inspired me to think "Fuck, I've never liked that (say) bracket, I'm going to cut it off and make another"... Varying degrees of success but hey, got nothin' but time in the Rona lockdown.

Up to episode 21. Still flabbergasted how complicated cars are. Or overcomplicated by their own admission.

Looms are good from scratch. Painful from std go highly modified. Especially when your requirements evolve mid process. From scratch is easier but you need a big piece of paper for the diagram and to understand if you are switching power or connecting ground to complete the circuit.

And don't solder. And never ever bloody ever use preinsulated crimps.

Sorry, i was miles out, but let's split the difference and call it the 60s. Or 1966.

On reflection I think you may be right. I gave my BSA history book and parts book to a guy who was restoring a B44 so I can't check. IIRC the book explained that when Jeff Smith won the title the factory management got excited and insisted on a titanium frame against Smith's objections. So that would be, as you say, 1966.

I was recalling it as being from nearer the end of the line, a last desperate throw of the dice, but apparently not.

Binky has had me wondering. I was sure I'd bought a step drill in the deep past just because. Never really knew what it did, seemed a lazy mans odd job tool. Never really considered sheet. Generally just clamp stuff and use reduced shank drills. But it looks easier and safer.

Found it in a little box intended for a few sizes. Only 4-20, but must remember to try it out someday.

After our mini was passed onto a favoured cousin, I got to use a cooking model fiord laser. Then we swapped back for a week for some reason. At 16 I remember being startled how everything on the mini was completely shit. I was spoilt by an ex rental 1100cc 1980 Mazda clone.

Best feature on the mini, which now felt like sitting on a vibrating collapsed beer crate was the oversized steering wheel which helped you to pull on as you stamped on the brakes. Bear in mind the previous owner from new was my granny and is was low mileage so it wasn't a nail, except by design.

Actual suspension, actual brakes, and a gearbox that wasn't like shaking a stick in a cave will be a substantial improvement on Binky, let alone seats made for humans and rain sensing wipers.

Maybe not ducting air TO the calipers, but away from - the wheels would be drawing air from the centre out as they spin, picking up the hot air thats spun out by the ventilated disks. If the disks are shrouded by wide wheels it would impede the airflow, so turn the wheel into an extension of the disk cooling ducts.

Now then. This is special: its the two door with the fancy front panel. British Leyland's answer to the hot hatch. I am hoping that the first time he feeds it the fat on the road it stretches and the doors fly open... Old boy doing the fabrication seems to know his shit. (I am only at Ep 2 but enjoying the build. So you like the Jag powered Princess better then ?

There was something in a book about how the princess was designed to be a hatchback but BL thought it would steal sales from the Allegro so they deleted it.
Only redeeming quality wityh princesses was they had Lockhead 4 piston calipers that you could transplant onto Ford Escorts.
At the time, the only thing uglier then both of the Princess and the Allegro was the Maxi.

I had a Datsun 180B. It was 10 years old when I got it. My Dad got a new Austin Princess. The Princess did not last longer than the Datsun. It was completely structurally fucked at 5 years of age. I sold the Datsun to my Mum's boss. It was 24 years old when it was struck off as NEFR. I replaced a head gasket and it's suspension at 110,000 kms. Mum's boss had it repainted and the rear arches repaired. It did another 100,000 before it went to the yard in 1998.

Perspectives. When they started selling Datsuns in the UK many of them were rusty from new then the salty roads finished them off. Mechanically great, though. Probably a good time to have bought waxoyl shares.
