Some roads are named for a reason.
Over my way we have “The Gentle Annie”... Napier Taihape. Then there is “The Devil’s Elbow “... Napier Wairoa.

Got any good ones where you are?

TIA

Twisters Nth of Tarawera known as The Nunnuries cause old a framed shelter at rest area used to look like a nunnery.
Just south of Butchers creek you have Prebbles corner although main road follows different course now, the infamous MP crashed there long time ago.
In trucking circles a lot of corners are named after drivers or companies who have crashed there in a memorable fashion.

If memory serves there is a 'Telegraph Road' close to Darfield. Those of us who are Dire Straits fans will connect - Plus it sort of echoes the sentiments of the song too - Well ish anyway

Telegraph Road, Selwyn District.

To be avoided by motorcyclists, it's so long and straight boredom overcomes one.

"The Divy" for the Deviation hill heading from Hamilton to Raglan. Great road but always populated by slow hippies

The Pig Root. Which is State Highway 85 ... between Palmerston (South) and Kyeburn.

Another favorite in the south is "The Catlins" ... and another "Must Do" in the south is the Milford road.

The Crown Range (The most direct route between Wanaka and Queenstown) used to be a good Motorcycle road. It still is ... sort of ... but it is a very busy tourist road in the winter AND summer ... due to the tourist and ski traffic.

SH1 runs between Clinton and Gore, signed as the Presidential Highway in a wonderful play on words.

The inland short cut is SH93 or the Old Coach Road. Also known as the Monica Lewinsky Highway due to it being an alternative route.

Not sure that it being well used by truck drivers has anything to do with it.

I had not heard the alternate name for SH93. [emoji106]

There is the Devil's Staircase near the southern end of Lake Wakatipu. Not sure how it got that name.

Them were the days !! Haven't been over the hill for 6 or 7 years. An old friend popped in just yesterday on his NUDA Husky, we were laughing about all those years of Rimutukas....

Just for the short and winding bit near the Kingston end. The Road to Paradise (The Glenorchy road) is another good motorcycling road.

It's still a blast Gazza. More traffic these days, double yellows the whole way and dash cams to worry about now, but pick your moments and you can still have some fun. The quality of the turns and seal is excellent. Apparently the billboard says IT IS NOT A RACE TRACK. Really? It looks like a race track, smells like a race track, performs like a race track with sweepers and tight turns beautifully banked for full lean. It would be awesome for a closed road hill climb.

There's one of those "This is not a race track" signs on SH43. Where do they get these silly ideas?

There's one of those "This is not a race track" signs on SH43. Where do they get these silly ideas?Racing on public roads is illegal, so why say it's not a racetrack? Or is it some weird reverse psychology?

There was a few times in the late '70's ... a minor 'Traffic accident" closed the road. That left both lanes free for a fast run up for a few.

Then a shit cup of coffee at the shop at the top.

The Forgotten Highway - Of course it is not a race track .

Race tracks have flag marshals, ambulances, one way traffic, run off areas ..

If you are going to race on a road then you need to realize you are not on a race track - and look after yourself and each other ...

Nah. As I write this at 8.44PM on the 24/11 there will be no flag marshalls or ambulances at any of the tracks. They will look similar to the local GP of your choice, be it the Coromandel GP, SH43, The Rimutakas, or the Akaroa GP.

Just after 5am this morning SH1 north of Mosgiel was a racetrack with at least three bikes heading up Saddle Hill at very high speed by the sound of it. No flag marshalls, but unlikely to be any Police waiting at the Fairfield overbridge either.

Nice day for it.
