That's how I normally travel Taupo to Auckland too. Especially during the holiday season when every man and his dog is using SH1.

In non-holiday periods, If you're in slightly more of a hurry, another option is to go via SH32 and Old Taupo Road, coming out just north of Piarere. (Although, at this time of year, a better alternative would be to go out to Taumarunui and up SH4.)

I appreciate the intel folks.

I see people in the UK using the calimoto app. Is this or something else similar enabled for NZ roads?

I'll try the app next time I head out for a ride, although there are only limited options if you head north or east from Auckland.
