I told a guy once that use of both brakes in various circumstances is a good idea. Learning which circumstances are appropriate to which brake is the key. He told me he'll only ever use the rear brake, as he came off when he last used the front brake.
You just can't help some people.
The R1 came with the rear disc past the wear limit and a set of organic pads in the front callipers. Not an ideal setup for a sportsbike.

Yes, but organic pads will at least keep Julie Anne Genter happy, and let's face it, that's what matters.

I was out for my weekly fang yesterday . Just sitting puffing on my cigar and a fellow rocked up and started talking bikes (he apparently had a 1200 Bonneville)..
He was looking at my beast with its 320 double front discs .
The next statement explained what sort of rider I was chatting to." why don't they put those doubles on the back,I never use the front brakes !!!!!!!!!!) Fuck me !! I was shocked !
I suggested he do some sort of course. 63 yrs old, I am surprised he made it that far >>:eek5::blink:

I bet if you asked him if he considered learning how to use the brakes properly, he would tell you he's got by without having to know, so why does he need to learn.
One day, some tosser will pull out in front of him, I can guess how that'll go.

M109, actually. And yes, the big cruiser crowd often rely on the rear, due to the weight distribution of those things.
Which exposes them to risk in an emergancy stop situation. If their habit is to only use the rear, the black mark leading to the point of impact will tell a story.
On the Harleys I've had the rear brake was only ever used on (a) emergency stop or (b) on a long slowing downhill/slightly loose surface.
Despite the 'Harley brakes are crap' crows I locked up the front on a dry sealed surface when trying to avoid a sheep that ran out on front of me unexpectedly - enough to have smoke coming off the front tyre according to those behind me.

Often notice the cruiser bikes only have 1 brake disk on the front.
sprot bikes 2.
noticeable effect on cruisers using just rear brake.
Seeing this thread, reminds me to do some more brake practise.
stopping from speed should be practised as well as controlled steering during that time.
just replaced both sets of brake pads front and rear, much better.
more confident that I might be able to slow down whilst steering.

Single disc on front of a cruiser is fine, weight bias means rear brake does more work anyway.
Hard reality is that unless someone has been trained how to brake properly, and practices regularly, then stopping distances grow quite a bit. So under pressure it's basically "oh-shit-kinda-braking" as opposed to a controlled stop
If I can bring my hefty FJR to a halt from 100 in under 35 metres yet ol mate on his Farley takes twice as much distance...it is simply the operator skill/training/practice that makes the difference :brick:
I'm not 100% sure if I'm qualified to comment though :devil2: being an upholder of the standard  and perhaps a tad too passionate about road safety on 2/4 and more wheels

Desol spills are relitively easy to spot because of all those pretty colors and from a ditance it is normally darker than the tarmac.. So is pee gravel if you have slowed down enough at an intersection. Of course there is always trhe posiblity of the vehicle ahead obscuring them but then you are following far too close.

Interesting.
I hear people saying that people who make driving mistakes are idiots.
Not really. If they were out of the car and sitting in a pub I'd probably have a beer with them. They are just people who made a mistake.
We tend to demonize those we seek to blame. Its something we as humans do. Its a gross generalization and one of the steps of our psyche self defence mechanism.
The reality is we demonize those we see making mistakes, but we don't see our own mistakes. Its part of being human.
All to often people forget that the only reason we have survived our own mistakes is the absence of others or their good driving in evading us.
I think if we're all honest we have all taken too brief a look at the blind spot, neglected a head check or missed a speed limit sign at our own peril just to have someone on their horn swerving / braking for us.
If we're all honest someone else has thought us a careless driver, an arsehole driver or an idiot at some point.

Some are even worse than that: during my daily commute between Glenfield and East Tamaki, I often see cars following so closely that I literally couldn't fit my bike between them (and that's in 80km/h and 100 km/h traffic). If the car in front slammed on their brakes, they wouldn't even have time to react, let alone avoid a collision.

I've bored the crap out of my colleagues talking about how important following distance is.
Everyone has heard of the 2 second rule, how many actually use it? It would solve a lot of the safety issues we have on the roads.
But will it change? No, because everyone is so convinced they are shit hot drivers/riders, and that the laws of physics don't apply to them.

Exactly! Although I suspect ignorance rathe than a self imposed attitude that they're a shit hot driver is more likely. (Like the lady who thought the stopping distance at 50kph was 'about one or two metres' - I guess it would be if she hit a tree.)

Around my way lately ... when people check their phones for texts (after they hear the chime) ... Power poles leap out in front of them and commit suicide.
Would that be another Council failure ... or a failure to do with an Electric power supplier ... ???

8th February 2021, 20:53
You touch on quite a valid point. Power poles are placed too close to the road and when they get hit and someone dies they simply replace them in the same spot. Having a solid pole within a few metres of a rural road is not compatible with a safe system or vision zero approach. Have never understood how they get away with it. I know a couple of sites where the replacement pole was actually closer to the road than the one that was hit.
At least we don't have to worry about it with Aurora Energy. Their poles fall over in a strong wind.

Most people simply have no idea that it's a safety issue and think that following closely is how you tell other drivers that you want to overtake. So some education would definitely help.

Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule. I use it all the time, not only for my own safety and that of others but because the great PB might be watching me from above. I hate tailgaters and would in the past signal my annoyance to them via subtle hand gestures (not not pulling the finger, that just infuriates them) but this was quite ineffective. Then I read of an interesting technique, spray your windscreen washer. Coming home from the Golden Bay a week back I had a guy in a 90's Terrano trying to slip stream me at 100km/h. After the 3rd time of putting his wipers on he got the idea and backed off. He passed us as we stopped in Murchison with a very clean windshield. I like to think I not only avoided roadrage but gave him some new found clarity.

I don't think it's a result of people thinking that they're "shit hot drivers/riders" more a result of being stuck behind slow people (or slower than they'd like to travel) as a result of being too scared to pass due to the police gang hanging out many places including passing lanes & it's just plain dangerous to pass at the stated speed limit, so they resort to tailgating in an misguided & futile attempt to make traffic move faster.

2 seconds only works for alert drivers paying attention. I find 4 works best on cars and bikes, gives you a margin for those unavoidable lapses in concentration we all have.
Also it means the slow fecker in front won’t suspect he’s about to be overtaken allowing you to ambush nicely at next safe spot and pass with momentum before they get a chance to speed up.
4 secs also works well for the same reason 7 secs does in a heavy truck, it allows you to just lift off the throttle to avoid dancing on the brake pedal, that way when you do light up your brakes the person behind you actually registers it as a new event they might need to pay attention too.
I’ve been hit three times from behind, bike car and truck, none of them were following to close, just not paying attention at all. If you watch latest instalment of Aussie dashcams there’s some cracker rears in there and all seem to be same not looking at all....

Hit a fuel (of any kind) spill and you may skid sideways. Not often enjoyable at the time. Personally ... I try to avoid ding that. Well ... on my FJ anyway.
And you can expect to see a fuel spill on the outside of the first few corners past fuel stations and truck stops. Some forget to replace the fuel caps after refueling. They aren't always there ... but it wont hurt you to EXPECT to see one there. If you don't look for it ... you might smell it as you slide through it.

You’ve got me wrong, that’s all part of the technique as well. If your very close to someone that’s dicking around at say 80-85 then you need significant more power for successful overtake if they do the usual last minute foot down.
Whereas if you’ve already got momentum of a speed differential your horsepower is a failsafe extra margin available.

The explanation above fits in with the "I HAD to get past him, he was going too slow" excuse too:laugh:

Not the fault of, the result of, there is a difference.
Bullshit. Somebody in control of a vehicle at (or above/below) the prescribed speed limit ... cannot cause the person in control of the vehicle behind ... them to break any of the road rules pertaining to following distances. Any action (outside of the road traffic laws) the driver in the following vehicle takes ... does so by personal choice and can be held responsible for causing some resulting events if they take inappropriate or illegal driving actions. The onus has ALWAYS been on the overtaking driver to carry out the maneuver SAFELY. No regard is held in law as to the urgency that could be felt by the following driver to overtake. Even with a perceived emergency.
As much as "road safety" tries to ignore human behaviour, pretend it doesn't exist; humans are still gonna behave like humans & ignoring natural behaviour won't solve anything
Human behavior does not excuse law breaking. Ignoring the traffic laws on the basis of the "natural behavior" (of idiots) ... that disregard the traffic laws because ... they do not suit them at the time ... will not wash in any court of law.

Forward planning YES ... keen observation on approaching "Stuff" ... YES too.
The issue with overtaking on those corners ... take care. I have had a few (seemingly) unaware/uncaring that I was behind them and ready to pass. Those are the one's that cut the corner just as you are pulling out to pass. About that time ... you wish your bike was fitted with a train air horn. Or a rocket launcher ... either would work for me ...
Very much so. I hesitated to post overtaking through a corner because there is so much to consider, then thought fuck it.
You high light a very pertinent point, particularly on narrower roads.

Yeah do it be hilarious....
Some from me, family and workmates I know of...
Me speed.........” Well my Speedo is accurate cause that’s about how fast I thought I was going too! Was just trying to put some space between me and those trucks” - good cop smiled and let me go 116k in rain on 750 after overtaking trucks Taupo 20 years ago in the good ol days.
Cousin speeding..........” I’ve got cancer just hurry up write the ticket and F$@& off I haven’t got long to live” she’s beaten the brain tumours several times and not crashed either... poor cop didn’t know what to say
Truckie mate........”Does your mother know your doing this for a living” straight out cheeky but it got both of us bypassed through checkpoint while cop went and cooled off and prob red flagged Greg in the system for life if he wasn’t already
Me speed........ “ Yep sounds about right glad I looked in mirror as was about to open it up (gsxr1100)” got 5k discount for being polite
Me truck speed/logbook with highway patrol 4am.....”No your wrong that’s not how it works *gently retained possession of logbook from cop* I don’t need to write anything in there for 5.5hrs from last rest break, I can’t draw a line while I’m driving!” Cop returns to patrol car, sulks for 20minutes then returns with my 82/70k 4am ticket....(good result as that one had a bad rep with all truckie)

One I heard (and I used a while back) ... to the cop asking me what was the need for the speed .. ?? I said my wife left me for a cop. I thought he was bringing her back.

I got pulled over once and asked what the hurry was. I said that I didn't think I was speeding and enquired what speed he'd clocked me at. He didn't tell me, and instead sent me on my way telling me to slow down a bit.
My wife and I (she was driving) got pulled over doing 120 km/h in a 100. She asked the police officer "please don't ticket me because I've been giving him shit all week about a speed camera ticket, and if I get a ticket I'll never hear the end of it". Naturally, he said 20 km/h was too far over the limit, and that she'd get a ticket in the mail.

I don't think its that simple. I think overconfidence, if that is the driver, will manifest in many forms of risky behavior.
But I do agree with the next bit. We had people wanting to learn, and people wanting to shorten thier provisional licence, as it was back in the day. The 2nd group knew it all and could often ride quite well, from a technical point of view. I sent a couple home for dangerous stuff that put others at risk.
Which reminds me,. . .
Then there was the occasional Hardley wannabe who needed a licence and we didn't send them away for having a 1340 for the carpark stuff. But we did insist on gloves. Which they invariably weren't wearing. Better control you see. :tugger:
They never came back. Bet we were the butt of thier rants at the pub that night.
You just cant help the willfully stupid.I think you forget that accudent

Allighing togther.you may.get away lots of stuff 99 percent of the time.just because one of those factors was another persons fault .does you no favours when ur in funneral car.

You can brake hard without skidding ... and you lean into the direction best for you. As you would on any corner on a motorcycle.

My thoughts exactly and an intersection well known for it. I’m through there lots and usually have one hand steering and one hand hovering over the horn if I’m at the front of the queue.
I was through there on my push bike only 30 min earlier.

Even here in Dunedin ... I've lost count of the number of times MY light goes to green ... and there's still traffic going through the intersection.
And when the shit hits the fan ... somebody dies ... everybody's like ... it was an accident ... it wasn't their fault .. !!!
It was the sucker ... that waited until the green to go before they moved fault.

There's an intersection near my place it's normal to have to sit on green waiting for people who ignored the red. They are not the main worry though, it's the odd one who comes through on the main road at plus or minus 100kph. Red light? What red light?

Violation of right of way. Sad.I can only improve upon my own errors, but on a 90 minute ride yesterday I counted 6 cars that just flew through a stop sign as it didn't exist. I was on the main road, they were each at an intersection in front of me (approaching the intersection) on my left or right.
There is no way they didn't see me. But chose to do as they wished.
