Incorrect. They both acted like Presidents.

As do Prime Ministers ACT like Prime Ministers.

As Presidents/Prime Ministers ... They have the power to make those decisions. Those that voted for the "Other" Party ... seldom like those actions.

Some people have short memories. Obama was accused of being a dictator because he was ruling by executive order. The reason he was doing that was because the Republicans controlled the Senate and the Senate would pass nothing put forward by Obama.

Trump carried the practice on, despite the Sentate being in Republican hands .

Currently there are hundreds of acts passed by the last (Democrat) Congress stacked on hold. Mitch McConnell, the Republican who controlled the Senate, would not put any Democrat measure to the vote. He referred to himself as the Grim Reaper, his desk was where Democrat legislation went to die.

It seems entirely logical that Biden will undo Trump executive orders with another executive order. The Democrats, having a majority on Congress, and a razor thin majority in the Senate, can return to operating as was originally intended. They do have one problem - Joe Manchin. A Democrat, his views are often more Republican. If he votes against anything the measure will likely be lost.

No doubt by fringe republicans, however I'm talking about the Mainstream narrative here (Washington Post, NYT, CNN etc.).

I also see the Biden has removed the Bust of Sir Winston Churchill, which I feel is probably an Omen of sorts.

And you'll note, I'm not complaining that Biden is doing it - My complaint is (as always) about the Double-Standard.

Even if his actions to systematically erase every trace of Trump have a somewhat 'Year 0' feel about them...

It's not exactly that Antifa is a fictional organisation, it's that it is not an organisation at all. From time to time a group of people may decide they are Antifa and behave in such a manner that they can be considered Antifa. There is no national organisation, there is no Headquarters, there is no leader, anything that claims there is can fairly be considered fiction.

Mentioning George Soros cheques is a dead give-away that we're dealing with someone of excessive credulity.

The White House has a large collecton of artwork. All presidents decorate the spaces they use with artworks to their preference. Fine. There were multiple occasions when Trump's choices were criticised or analysed. There were more important things to write about then, so too now with Biden.

I don’t buy that. No matter if it’s a workplace, sports team or casual hobby/riding group there always exists a heirachy and stronger people within self designate themselves as leaders. Without leadership they would be totally ineffective.
Yet at every major protest they are there early up front hard and fast organising chaos. You don’t get pallets of bricks dropped off the night before without money or leadership and planning.

odd how someones forgot how trump kept firing FBi directors and FBI deputy directors that were investigating him.....

McCabe was elevated to the role of acting FBI director in May 2017 after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, and said he promptly opened two investigations into the president. A criminal inquiry focused on whether Trump obstructed justice by firing Comey, and a separate counterintelligence probe sought to determine whether the president was acting on behalf of the Russian government.
Trump’s firing of Comey came a day after former acting Attorney General Sally Yates told a Senate panel that she had informed the White House on Jan. 26 that Flynn was at risk of blackmail by Moscow because he had been untruthful about his discussions with the Russian ambassador, Sergei Kislyak. Trump fired Flynn 18 days later.
To justify his firing of Comey, Trump cited a three-page memo by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that detailed actions Comey took in relation to the FBI’s investigation of Hillary Clinton’s private email during her time as secretary of State.

But McCabe on Sunday claimed that Trump had urged Rosenstein to reference in his memo the bureau’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Trump asked Comey to pledge his loyalty to him, but the FBI chief declined. Then Comey ignored the president’s appeal to end an investigation into his former national security adviser.
Trump asked Rosenstein to draft a memo recommending the dismissal, and to “put the Russia stuff” in it, according to the notes of a senior Justice Department official.
Rosenstein agreed to the memo but resisted any Russia reference. He knew as he left the White House that day that Comey would be fired
“In fact, when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said, you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story,” Trump said. “It’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should’ve won.”

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe said he was ousted from the bureau in March 2018 because he opened two investigations into President Donald Trump 10 months earlier.

or this wee gem

Trump Revokes Lobbying Ban He Signed At The Beginning Of His Presidency
President Donald Trump, in one of his last acts as president, revoked his own executive order requiring federal government appointees to sign a pledge to not lobby the agencies in which they worked for five years after leaving the administration.
President Trump Signs Executive Orders In The Oval Office

The initial executive order, entitled ”Ethics Commitments by Executive Branch Appointees,” was signed by Trump just 8 days into his presidency and also included a ban on lobbying certain officials for the remainder of the Trump administration.
In addition to the lobbying ban, the pledge also included agreements to not become registered foreign agents, not accept gifts from lobbyists while serving in the administration.
The executive order did allow former lobbyists to enter the administration, but it placed a two year restriction on them working in agencies they previously lobbied.
The revocation was announced by the White House moments after it released a long list of Trump’s final pardons, including controversial ones like former adviser Steve Bannon and rappers Lil Wayne and Kodak Black

The new First Cat was pictured sitting at that desk yesterday. I thought the Resolute desk was the standard fitment in the oval office now. There were a couple of what appeared to be bronze busts behind the desk but who they were I couldn't say.

Kamala Harris' new desk isn't quite as flash, but it is an impressive piece of furniture.

You do know that Chavez was all about border control?

"The late labor leader Cesar Chavez, whose bust sits behind President Biden’s desk, was vehemently opposed to the immigration policies that the president has promised to enact.

The bust of Chavez was noticeably present behind Biden on Wednesday as he signed executive orders on immigration, overturning former President Donald Trump’s policies and benefiting people in the United States illegally and those trying to enter illegally.

Biden was immediately questioned about the Chavez bust on social media, with many wondering why someone who opposed Biden’s stance on immigration would have such a prominent place in the Oval Office.

“Note the bust of Cesar Chavez behind Biden as he signed executive orders,” conservative radio host Larry Elder tweeted. “Is Biden aware that Chavez, born in USA, HATED #illegalimmigration because it depressed wages — and that Chavez worked with the feds to stop it?”

You need to stop watching Hannity. There might be a hitch in Biden’s plan because there’s tens of millions of vaccine doses missing. Have the Trump crime family sold the vaccines to Russia or the Saudis?

Biden will have competent people on the job but the US will always be difficult because many people don’t have sick leave and can’t afford a doctor. Then there’s the fuckwits that think masks and isolation are for other people.

Exactly. There was a recent report that Johns Hopkins University and another institution had rated countries according to their perceived ability to cope with a pandemic. Australia and NZ were not rated highly, Britain and the US were very highly rated.

OK, nobody knew Britain was going to have Boris for PM and an utterly clueless government when a pandemic struck, but the things you mention made me think from the beginning that the US was always going to have a problem. Maybe the professors need to get out and talk to people?

As further evidence of how backward the US is, in California there is currently a move to introduce bereavement leave. The Republicans in Congress are fighting moves to raise the minimum wage to $15.00. Annual leave? Sick leave? Maternity leave? Forgetaboutit.

As further evidence of how backward the US is, in California there is currently a move to introduce bereavement leave. The Republicans in Congress are fighting moves to raise the minimum wage to $15.00. Annual leave? Sick leave? Maternity leave? Forgetaboutit.

Hey Guys! You know how the Economy is struggling and many businesses are worried about going under?

I've got this great idea: Why don't we increase the costs of compliance whilst they are potentially going to be going Bankrupt! That'll boost the economy for sure!

That depends on what you see as the repaired state and the broken state.

cutting 70,000 jobs for example would seem to me to be both deliberately breaking something and an act of Vindictiveness.

"Biden’s immigration orders, giving citizenship to some 11 million illegal immigrants, halting construction of the Mexican border wall and imposing a moratorium on deportations for 100 days, trash the rule of law and spell administrative and policing chaos. More than that, they undermine the very concept of a nation, which depends for its continued existence upon its borders being secure; and they take a wrecking ball to the concept of citizenship: the bargain of duties and rights that exists only between a government and its country’s citizens."

"In another order, Biden undermined American security by reversing the ban on travel from terrorist hotspots, including Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Somalia in addition to North Korea, Chad and Venezuela. This ban was not, as was so falsely and slanderously characterised by the Democrats, a “ ban on Muslims”. It was introduced in 2017 against certain countries whose governments could not provide proper documentation, vetting or identification information for citizens travelling to the US. It was a ban on countries whose record of Islamist or other anti-western extremism and violence meant that prudence dictated its inhabitants should be presumed to be a potential danger to America. By ending it, Biden has made America unsafe. It is an unreasonable act, motivated entirely by the Democrats’ ideologically twisted misrepresentation of any action aimed to protect citizens against Islamic extremism as anti-Muslim bigotry."

That idea is no less out of whack than most of your others. The US has had 250 odd years to do those things, for the last year your excuse almost makes sense but not for the rest of history. Jaoan has had a community based health system since 1927. Nearly one hundred years later the Yanks still got nothin'. They do have about 650,000 medical bankruptcies each year though.

The Yanks are treated like a mushroom. If the blue collar and lower paid workers actually found out how they rate internationally they'd probably be seriously pissed off.

So there's 2 things in here that I think are important:

I don't disagree that some of the workers protection we take for granted should exist in the US. I've maintained that for all it's issues, Social Healthcare is a good thing. The point is the timing.

Let's assume there wasn't a Pandemic and that Trump's record economy continued and Biden was elected - if they said 'Hey, we've got this record economy, now's a good time to introduce some of these changes' - I'd hear an argument about 'Sabotaging progress' - but I could also concede that now is a good time to implement them

The second part is about the Blue Collar worker - the biggest cause of Wage stagnation is an excess supply of workers. If you have 10 jobs available and 1,000 people applying for them - you can set the lowest wage and the shittiest of perks. If, however you have 10 jobs available and only 5 people applying for them - then you have to raise the Wages or the Perks so that you can fill the positions. If you have large numbers of unskilled or blue collar workers entering the country illegally - that WILL suppress the wages of everyone in that section.

And that's when we take a look at what Biden wants to do....

Biden was a 29-year-old lawyer when he won the election to the U.S Senate in November 1972 against a Republican incumbent by a mere 3,162 votes. His previous political experience before he won the seat was as a member of the New Castle County Council in Delaware.

However, before Biden had assumed offices, in just six weeks, his life took the most tragic of turns when his wife Neilia and their 1-year-old daughter, Naomi, were killed in an automobile accident.

Just like in any tragedy, one of the main questions is what caused the fatal accident? Neilia Biden's station wagon was broadsided by a tractor-trailer truck at an intersection, but what was the underlying cause of the fatal accident?

Biden has publicly stated or alleged that the driver tractor-trailer who hit his wife's station wagon had been drinking. During a speech that he gave at the University of Delaware a week after the 9/11 terror attacks, he said he sympathized with the tragedy as he too lost his loved ones due to a drunk driving incident.

In December 2007, while stumping for the Democratic presidential nomination in Iowa City, Biden again told the story about how he lost his wife and child while answering a voter's question about negative campaigning, as reported by The New York Times.

Based on evidence and witness accounts, it appeared that Neilia Biden had pulled into the truck driver's right of way at an intersection with a two-way stop, and the tractor-trailer driver was unable to stop in time to avoid striking her car.

After the trucker died, Biden finally apologized to the trucker's daughter for lying about her father (for decades).

Was listening to a podcast and they were saying that none of the other Democrat candidates would have beaten Trump, that may well be right. I certainly don't think Americans are ready to vote for a guy with a husband.

Listening to another podcast and the view was that McConnell will just shepherd this impeachment trial through the senate as he did the last. I'm not so sure, Trump is talking about forming a new political party. Such a party would take enough votes from the Republicans to ensure a Democrat win. McConnell is devious enough to allow Trump to be found guilty so as to be prevented from taking any future part in politics.

Hannity is talking about Biden introducing re-education camps for Republicans and his fuckwit audience are believing it. If they had a functioning brain the threat would sound familiar because he also said that about Obama. The camps didn't appear that time either, they existed only in Hannity's mind. Trump buried some loyalists in the civil service and changed the rules covering their employment. In effect he was creating the very 'deep state' he had always whinged about but which didn't exist. Biden will have to change the rules back to winkle them out - once he knows who they are.

In the US, for over 90 days in summer, there was utter havoc in dozens of American cities. Downtowns were ravaged. Stores were looted. Arson was customary. More than 700 police were injured and spat upon. In all, those “mostly peaceful” protests did billions of dollars in damage, leaving thousands of business owners bankrupt, and at least three-dozen people dead.

In other words, the visuals were the same old, same old we had seen during the violent 2017 Inauguration Day protests in Washington, the rioting in Ferguson and Baltimore, in New York during the final stages of the Occupy Wall Street take over, and the WTO violence over two decades ago in Seattle—with one major exception. This time the authorities saw far more election-year political advantage in defending the violence than in suppressing it, and so made the necessary adjustments, at least until Election Day.

The mayors of the targeted cities like Portland, Seattle, Chicago, and Minneapolis contextualized and supported the mayhem (“block party” and “summer of love”). They cared little for the thousands of lives that were wrecked by the destruction.

Joe Biden excused Antifa as a mere “idea” (a presidential ante facto impeachable offense?)—largely because millions of his supporters condoned or explained away the violence, and they said so publicly.

Kamala Harris warned America that the protests, which were increasingly turning more violent, would and should continue.

And that sentiment is precisely why Harris helped to bail out arrested street activists instead of raising funds for injured police.

Yes, there was linear progression, and then it doubled.

Doubling (at least for an Economy) is a massive acceleration.

I'd be interested to see the data (and source) that you're referring to. Assume that you're referring to GDP data.

After the downturn in the US real economy (arising from business shutdown due to Covid), a "doubling of economic growth" (in % terms) over a short period might not be as large (significant) as first thought.

It would also be interesting to know what proportion of the US real economy (given how much is service based) actually recovered to its initial position prior to Covid.

Obama goes from ~10,000 - ~20,000 in 8 years, Trump goes from ~20,000 - ~30,000 in less than 4 - and although there's a big downspike from Covid, it does seem to have bounced back strong.

Yeah, Trump's focus on the stock market got him a lot of votes from people who didn't much care what else he did, so long as their 401K pension plan was on the up and up.

Trump didn't know much about economics but he understood that the share market perorming well was good for votes. He has had the US Treasury pumping trillions into the share market to keep it artificially inflated. Some investors will be holding their breath while they wait to see what Biden does. If he stops boosting the market it could crash. If the US stock market crashes ours will likely follow suit. Interesting.

You make it sound like ensuring retirees and Pensioners can live comfortably in their old age is a bad thing. Surely it is better that their 401K does brilliantly so they don't require government assistance?

What he did was deregulation and cutting red-tape. The current Left has abandoned it's libertarian ideas and loves centralisation and Bureaucracy. Cutting the cost of Compliance meant that Companies could focus on doing business rather than compliance. This lead to low unemployment, Economic growth etc. etc.

As for Biden - he's already killed 70,000 jobs and the Sword of Damacles is hanging over New Mexico's oil and gas industry. There's been some rather hilarious posts by people who publicly supported Biden and have now found themselves on the chopping block crying 'No one told us he would do this' - and people like me going 'Yeah, we did - you called us names - and now you get what you fucking deserve'

On the grand scale - you can see the general upward trend of the US economy, but if you look at the detail - towards the end of Obama's presidency, Economic growth slowed down.

The other thing to note is that after you've had a massive crisis - the numbers can be misleading: going from 1 to 2 represents a 100% increase, whereas going from 10 to 15 is only a 50% increase, despite being a greater absolute change. I should add this is not a knock on Obama, whilst there are things to critique him on, overall he did okay - but look at the data from 15-16, you'll see a Slump, then Trump gets elected and it kicks back up again.

The other thing to note on things like Unemployment is the law of diminishing returns - so as the rate gets lower, the effort needed to lower it further becomes exponentially harder.

President Donald Trump halted flights from China this time last year in an attempt to prevent the Wuhan coronavirus from spreading throughout the United States.

When he implemented those travel restrictions, the left – including now President Joe Biden – accused Trump of being a "xenophobic" and a "racist."

Health care leaders have repeatedly said that decision, especially being made so early on, helped prevent the outbreak in the United States from being worse than it currently is.

Before leaving office, Trump decided to roll back travel restrictions on those coming from Brazil, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

On Monday, Biden reimplemented those very travel bans.

But - it's different when the left do it. Yeah, nah.

Granted, the rate of GDP growth for the "real" economy did reduce towards the end of Obama's second term (from +2.9% in 2015 down to +1.6% in 2016), but it was still positive. Given that some annualised statistics are not complied and finalised until well after the end of a period, this data might not have even been available (to voters) in November 2016 when the 2016 US election was held.

Furthermore, the US share-market was still looking positive at that time: See the 10 Year window for the lower chart: https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/index/djia/charts

I doubt very much either were significant reasons for Obama to be "shown the door" in 2016. Or for Trump to be elected.

Though I can however recall some other issues that might have contributed to Obama's exit. Such as:

1. Healthcare Plan (ACA) - over the course of 2008-10 - one that only a lobbyist for a health provider could love (effectively kicking single payer "Medicare for All" to the curb).

2. Backlash against Obama's tolerance of banking behaviour that led to the 2008-09 GFC - the Occupy Wall Street movement (and its eventual close-out by the Obama administration and some Democrat mayors in 2011).

3. Proposed Bank Regulation Legislation - culminating in the tepid Dodd-Frank Act in 2011 (supposedly to prevent the excesses leading to the 2008 GFC from ever happening again).

4. Weak Economic Stimulus post GFC - Anaemic economic stimulus package during first term, coupled with large numbers of Americans losing their jobs and their homes (the latter often due to illegal bank foreclosures)

5. Democrats losing control of the Senate in 2014 (hat-tip to Pete376403 - post #108).

6. Obama and Israel - culminating in Netanyahu speaking to the (Republican controlled) Senate in 2015.

7. Obama - Nobel Peace Prize winner and his human rights record - His drone assassination program; His failure to close Guantanamo Bay; Continuation of surveillance programmes initiated by GW Bush, and his failure to restrict domestic surveillance programmes following NSA exposure by Snowden in 2014.

8. Obama's lack of support for the Black sector of the US community - that their economic difficulties were the result of their own self-defeating and dysfunctional behaviour , and not in any way due to institutional racism [ Likely cost the Democrats dearly in terms of support in a number of swing states in the 2016 election ].

9. Hillary and her "basket of deplorables" and her "extreme carelessness with an email server".

10. The Tea Party and its strong advocacy for tax cuts - with support from organisations such as AFP (Americans for Prosperity) funded by the Kochs [ Perhaps the two words "Tax Cuts" resonated ].

As for Trump, how did Don - the least desired of the Republican candidates (from the GOP perspective) - end up as the Republican candidate ? And beat Hillary in the election ?

Perhaps his support for "tax cuts" (culminating in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act) provided some early support:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_Cuts_and_Jobs_Act_of_2017

I struggled to find any mention of "swamp cleansing" within the GOP policy portfolio:
https://www.thebalance.com/do-republican-economic-policies-work-4129139

Perhaps that explains why the "honeymoon" did not last long.
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/

As for unemployment, I can't recall either of the two main parties having "reduction in unemployment" as a major policy plank. Especially in this heavily globalised world.

Not that I'd necessarily believe US job number reporting in any case:

President Donald Trump halted flights from China this time last year in an attempt to prevent the Wuhan coronavirus from spreading throughout the United States.

When he implemented those travel restrictions, the left – including now President Joe Biden – accused Trump of being a "xenophobic" and a "racist."

really.....................

forty-five nations imposed travel restrictions on China before the United States did. The earliest of those restrictions went into effect Jan. 24, nine days before the U.S. travel ban went into effect on Feb. 2. The U.S. travel restriction came a month after China first announced its outbreak and at a point when the United States and more than 20 other countries had already reported coronavirus cases. Several of those countries, including Germany and the United States, were already reporting local transmission of cases. Between the first official report of an outbreak in China and the announcement of U.S. travel restrictions, more than 40,000 travelers from China were estimated to have entered the United States.

The measure that the Trump administration implemented could not be described as a “ban” that “closed the country”: It only prohibited U.S. entry to foreign nationals who had visited China in the last 14 days. Americans and U.S. permanent residents returning from Hubei Province were still allowed, subject to a 14-day quarantine. After these policies were enacted, hundreds of thousands of travelers continued to arrive in the United States via direct flights from China. Until Feb. 27, no other travelers to the United States faced such travel restrictions and quarantine requirements — even if they were arriving from other nations that were reporting coronavirus cases.

Restricting flights from China did nothing to prevent the virus from arriving from other parts of the world. Genetic analyses have shown that the large epidemic that unfolded in New York was linked to travelers from Europe. In the early days of the U.S. epidemic, testing was restricted to people with a travel history to China, which limited the ability to detect locally the cases and infections among travelers from other countries.

By the time Trump expanded travel restrictions to Iran on Feb. 28 and to European nations on March 12, it was largely too late. By mid-March, the United States was approaching 2,000 confirmed cases and experiencing severe shortages in testing capacity that meant many infections likely went undiagnosed. The travel restriction did not initially apply to the United Kingdom, which already had hundreds of reported cases.

Before this pandemic, the World Health Organization had warned that travel bans contribute to “a false impression of control” — the misperception that a ban would stop the spread of disease. The reliance on travel bans over domestic readiness.

The combination of travel restrictions within China and international travel restrictions against China may have delayed the spread of the coronavirus across the globe in the first 50 days of this pandemic. Those delays were useful to nations such as New Zealand, Australia and Taiwan that used the opportunity to expand testing, contact tracing and other aggressive domestic measures to control the spread of the virus. The United States did not do so. Before March 1, U.S. public health departments conducted fewer than 100 tests.

You would think so, but Castor is still rated as good or better in most extreme applications.

There's a world of difference between charging in 5 minutes in a controlled environment under ideal conditions and charging in 5 minutes in the real world.

10 -15 years is generally the time for a new technology (especially Tech where there are regulatory and safety hoops involved) to go from Proof of Concept (which is where we are at now) to: small scale test, large scale test, initial roll out and finally fullscale roll out.

Again - I'm quite excited for Electric Vehicles to mature to the point where they are on parity with Petrol vehicles, but until that happens it's premature.

Then after that we have to address the Elephant in the room for Electric Vehicles:

Where does the Electricity that power them come from? Solar? Wind? Nuclear? Fossil Fuels (oops!)? Geothermal? All of them have downsides - such as location, public perception, consistency etc.

Personally - I'm most interested in someone developing a means of reliably harvesting Electricity from Waves/Tides in the sea

So, the technology isn't Mature. This is not to knock it, but simply saying that if everything is ready in 2023 - what do the people who have lost their jobs between now and then do?

And that is assuming that there is perfect fluidity between someone who has spent 20-30 years specializing in an industry to working in a completely different industry.

These batteries were produced in a factory - 1000 of them. It is not going to take 10 to 15 years before they are ready.

Sure, but that's a small production run. That is 1/10th of a single day's worth of Production run for say a Corrolla. As an interesting aside - the Toyota Prius was first released in 1997, didn't really get a major release until 2004 and the plugin version (what we think of when someone says 'Prius') wasn't released until 2011.

Don't get me wrong - a rapid charge battery sounds great and I can't wait to see the progress, but to go from a production run of 1000 to a full scale run is going to take time.

Tidal has it's proponents as well, environmental damage they say.

Everything has a trade off - the main problem with Tidal is consistent power delivery and being able to handle storm surges. Apparently Waves don't care what they crash into ;)

Lets simply pick options that are not going to kill billions in the future eh. Hot tip, it is not yet another oil pipeline.

I'm going to answer this with a bit of a story:

I have a book, on Energy production, it's a Kids book - but the interesting thing was that it was written in 1990s - in fact - it's this one: https://www.bookdepository.com/Energy-Power-Richard-Spurgeon/9780746004227 - there's 2 things that are interesting in it.

The first is the tone - for example, there's a section on Nuclear Power which lists the positives of Nuclear power and some of the criticisms - and closes by inviting the reader to write to both sides of the argument and request more information, so that they make up their own mind.

The second is in the back of the book, it lists a number of stats about Energy production - including things like X million barrels per day and what the current reserves are and how long they are expected to last with the current reserves and the current rate of production.

Those predictions (with the advent of 30 years) have shown to be wrong. I also still have school books (that were written in the 80s) that have a similar section - listing current reserves and current consumption and making a prediction that and categorically wrong.

I'm going to end with this source: https://cei.org/blog/wrong-again-50-years-of-failed-eco-pocalyptic-predictions/ and the actual point:

The Claim that something we are doing now is going to Kill Billions in the future is a Claim that I've heard from the 'environmental' side for my entire life. And I've still got the books and the memory of where these claims were written and what the time-scales were. On every claim that they've made, they've been wrong. And not just a bit wrong, but completely wrong.

Does this mean that like the boy who called wolf, they should be dismissed out of hand? No. I look forward to functional green technologies that are both better for the environment AND fulfill all the requirements of the end user.

But that also means we should treat those with a particular vested interest in there being a Climate Crisis with a high degree of suspicion when they tell us that there is another catastrophe around the bend and we should remind ourselves that their predictions to date have been wrong.

Saw a good breakdown other day of how Lithium is the only metal suitable for the types of batteries needed for EV. And it has set lifecycle properties dictated by science. You can abuse all manner of batteries in quick charges briefly but long term it’s not effective. Also taking them them to zero or near zero charge is not good for them despite what some will claim.

Even Electric Jesus’s latest claim of new battery tech is not his, Panasonic owns the tech and it’s still just another lithium phosphate battery.
Lithium batteries aren’t new technology so don’t expect any major miracle advancement ts when the chemistry is already known.

Could you imagine the catastrophe if the grid went down and electric trucks and harvesters couldn’t be charged???! Never mind that such specialised gear is usually double shifted and never idle during harvest times.... You can’t stop and plug in when a rain storm is headed to wheat field...

I don't think that not going ahead with one pipeline is going to bring all that catastrophe to fruition.

And yet.....

Written by “staff writer” translation cut and paste plagiarism from another publication “Nature Journal” sounds really scientific and credible lol...

The study by researchers at x University...well anything is possible in a lab but is it viable in real world conditions....

They use Watt hours instead of amp hour so to get a bigger more impressive sounding number. Given typical high dc voltages in EV cars a bit of maths says it’s a humble 100amp hour battery...

It has a range of 250 miles... powering what at what average speed and conditions???
It has a 2 million mile lifetime .... powering what and in what conditions
Absolute fluff piece...

Even once something commercially viable is made I’d derate whatever the manufacturer claims by at least 25%. Seen heaps in trucking industry where manufacturer claims a lot on paper about performance and service intervals but it’s not until you have real world commercial use that you see how something actually performs.
Iv’e no doubt stuff with decent range will come out soon but how long it lasts is another story..,

US Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the president so it is normal for an incoming president to ask for these resignations. Two US Attorneys will be permitted to stay and continue their work: the US Attorney in Delaware investigatig Hunter Biden, and the US Attoreny investigating the FBI spying on the 2016 Trump campaign.

Amazing. Unlike the last four years where self interest was the sole criterion, decisions are being made on the basis of ethical considerations. How refreshing.

Texas has suffered a severe winter storm. Large areas are fozen and the power is cut to millions apparently. They aren't used to this. Just a week or two ago Republican poiticians were suggesting Texas secede from the union, but they were super fast on the draw when it came to rquesting emergency aid. Unlike Trump, Biden responded quickly, and he didn't even ask for a favour.

Now the Republican politicians are blaming Biden and Harris's Green New Deal for the power outage. Never mind that there hasn't been time yet for the new administration to even start work on their green agenda. The Republican story also ignores the history. Texas withdrew from the national grid and went it alone. They could do it better they said. They dereglated the market and arranged it so the people who owned the power companies could make more money. Now suddenly it's all somebody else's fault.

The Texas power outage is creating oportunites for politicians to shoot themselves in the foot. Rick Perry has said on FOX that lack of power due to green policies as espoused by AOC will kill people. This is the same Rick Perry who as Governor of Texas took Texas off the national grid. Having done such a stunningly good job of that, Trump made him Secretary of Energy in charge of all US energy generation. And the nuclear arsenal.

After decades of Republican control in Texas, officials are blaming the democrats and windmills. The windmills in Texas were not 'winterised' and they failed. There are parts of the US that experience much colder weather than Texas and their wind turbines did not experience the same failure rate. Greenland apparently uses wind turbines without too much difficulty. Not that reality has much to do with things in Texas. About 88% of their power comes from nuclear, coal,* or predominantly natural gas. Only about 12% comes from wind turbines. The cold put one of the nuclear stations and most of the gas fired generation out of action. It has been suggested that the problem in Texas is that everything was done on the cheap.

* I've also seen mention of oil which makes more sense it is Texas after all.

If I heard right the news mentioned over 100 have died of carbon monoxide poisoning from running their cars in the garage to get warm. Others have burned down their house while trying to heat it.

Millions have no water and no power and it's below freezing. Tough on the homeless. Senator Ted Cruze of Texas is a good man in a tight spot, he has taken off with his family to a resort in Cancun, Mexico. Just across the water from Cuba. Should be a lot nicer there.

It turns out the situation in Texas is not without precedent. They had a freeze in 1989 which caused similar problems and another in 2011. Following the 2011 freeze the national electricity body (FERC) investigated and produced a 300 plus page report. The basis of the report was that electricity generation in Texas should be winterised.

It seems that because:
1) it would have cut profits and
2) Texan politicians don't like the federal govt telling them what to do, precisely nothing was done.

If Texans keep electing clowns such as those that have been running the state for decades nothing will change.

Just one problem among many, Harris County Jail. Nine thousand prisoners, 2000 guards, they have electricity but no water pressure. The toilets don't flush.

Well maybe that should have been taken into consideration when they were installed. It's not like snowfall in Texas is unknown. This storms severity might be unusual, but good management practice should consider unusual events when planning. How many corners were cut to generate a higher profit?

"The Northern Plains' climate is semi-arid and is prone to drought, annually receiving between 16 and 32 inches (810 mm) of precipitation, and average annual snowfall ranging between 15 and 30 inches, with the greatest snowfall amounts occurring in the Texas panhandle and areas near the border with New Mexico."

As has been mentioned this extreme cold weather seems to occur every ten years or so. Following the 2011 incident Texas was advised to 'winterise' their generation resources but they knew better. Greenland and Denmark among others use wind turbines. The reasons the Texan turnbines failed are basically stupidity and greed.

No doubt there's factors at play - and the ones listed are entirely reasonable, Management loves to not spend big bucks on upgrades to protect against 1 in X year events.

It's more that the comparison is a touch unreasonable, since when designing a system, one can be reasonably sure that in Antarctica, one is going to encounter sub-zero temps...

I'm currently reading "We Are Bellingcat" (recommended) and as a consequence would be very selective when quoting RT. It is a Russian Govt operation and is often used to spread propaganda. Following the downing of the Malaysian airliner over Ukraine, RT was a major source of misinformation. The aim being to "flood the zone with shit" to quote Steve Bannon.

Afterthought: For anyone unfamiliar with who Bellingcat is, they do open source investigations. Mostly volunteers, they are usually way ahead of the professionals such as MI6 and the CIA etc.

Morning,
Was busy with guests all day yesterday (wife's birthday), so I'm a little behind in reading some of the posts on KB.

RT
Ah, so you don't debate / dispute the contents of the RT articles themselves, but you do want to give me a heads-up that "RT is a Russian website dedicated to propaganda". OK. Noted.

Think that you will safely find similar articles produced by a number of western online newspapers on the same subjects around the same time (RT just one of many to do so). I just choose the RT articles to bait the Russophobes. :msn-wink:

If we were a little more even-handed, we could also mention some of the other candidates in the daily online propaganda stakes as well (e.g. the US - Washington Post and WSJ ; the UK - BBC and the Guardian; Germany - Deutsche Welle ; France - France 24; China - China Global Times; Middle East - Al Jazeera, just to name a few).

Bellingcat
I didn't realise that you were into fiction. Look, if you want to find more fiction to read (and better quality), can I suggest a quick trip to the local library? Probably a better selection available as well.

Think that anyone operating under the umbrella of the Atlantic Council, and being funded through the Council and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) NGO has clearly nailed their colours (political bias) to the mast for all to see.

https://www.rt.com/uk/504694-bellingcat-foreign-office-higgins/

Think your comment "usually way ahead of the professionals such as MI6 and the CIA" could have been better worded "usually front for the professionals such as MI6 and the CIA".

As for recommending Bellingcat and his publication: No, I'm sorry, I don't share your interest or belief in Bellingcat. Especially in relation to Syria. Perhaps it comes from his perceived "running interference" for the White Helmets (and, of course, their mutual Emmy nominations for acting).:msn-wink:

Obviously we see it differently. It was Bellingcat identified who shot down MH17. It was Bellingcat identified the Russian agents who poisoned the Skripals at Salisbury, it was Bellingcat identified the Cameroon soldiers who executed women and children.

The Dutch Police, with Australian and British Police in attendance, spent eight hours interviewing Eliot Higgins as a "witness" to the MH17 events. They then went back to Holland and set up their own "open source investigation" office.

Oh, and there's this:

Pritch,
Yes, you are quite correct. We do see it very differently. But I'm OK with that. Each to their own opinions.

The point I would make in reply is that it is an enormous bow to draw to state that:
-Bellingcat definitively established who shot down MH17.
-Bellingcat definitively established that it was "Russian agents" who were responsible for an alleged poisoning of the Skripals.

MH17
In the case of MH17, there has been plenty of articles published as this saga has slowly unfolded. A few examples from the MH17 related links that I have collected and stored since 2014.

1. Missile Used for Shooting Down of MH17
The missile used (identified from debris recovered from the wreckage field) indicated a BUK of make and model that had been delivered to (and was still in use by) Ukrainian forces in 2014:

https://www.globalresearch.ca/russia-reveals-the-mh17-smoking-gun/5654547

That BUK make and model had not been either manufactured by or supplied to Russian forces within the last 3 years prior to MH17 being downed (i.e. all Russian stock was of a newer model, which no longer deployed certain shaped shrapnel fragments seen for MH17).

That a Russian reconstruction of the cockpit of MH17 indicated shrapnel fragments relating to the earlier BUK make and model (in possession by Ukrainians forces alone).

2. Possible Breach of Procedures
That the Malaysian government not only expressed frustration of their exclusion from involvement, but also questioned the integrity of the JIT investigation (as well as identified a number of instances where tampering of artefacts may have occurred):

https://journal-neo.org/2018/09/26/mh17-some-truth-emerging-at-last/
https://southfront.org/documentary-on-mh17-reveals-5-year-long-string-of-lies/
https://anti-empire.com/mh17-evidence-tampering-revealed-by-malaysia-the-dutch-covered-up-forged-telephone-tapes-ukraine-hid-radar-records/

3. Ukrainian SBU Whistle Blower releases a Documentary Contradicting Western Assertions

https://oneworld.press/?module=articles&action=view&id=1241

4. Unsatisfactory Nature of Court Case being Conducted by the Dutch

https://journal-neo.org/2021/02/12/exposing-the-russophobic-jit-farce/

Not to mention other little details such as:

-One of the accused parties (Ukraine) is able to not only avoid direct investigation, but is also able to participate on the jury.
-Definitive radar data supposedly in possession of the US has still to be supplied to and reviewed by the Dutch court.

Lastly, your Bellingcat may well have been interviewed for 8 hours by Western authorities, who then chose to set up their own "open source" office. I just do not think either event had any particular relevance to or bearing on the investigation or the court case.

White Helmets
The Wiki article may well be "interesting", and paint the White Helmets in a positive light. But some investigative journalists on the ground in Syria found a much less positive picture.

https://21stcenturywire.com/2015/10/23/syrias-white-helmets-war-by-way-of-deception-part-1/
https://www.vietatoparlare.it/investigation-white-helmets-committing-acts-of-terror-across-syria/
https://www.rt.com/news/495092-white-helmets-founder-fraud/

So, Yes, I have some scepticism. But if people are interested in investigating further, I doubt my "negative view" (questioning the official narrative) on either topic is going to discourage them.

That's a very nicely prepared argument but Bellingcat would disagree. In the case of MH17, they know where the Buk came from, they know the details of the launcher, they tracked it from its unit in Kursk to Ukraine, they have photographs- and they tracked it back to Kursk minus one missile. They know where the missile was launched from. They know the names of the crew.

The Russians spread disinformatin to confuse the situation. Most of what you are quoting seems to be sourced from the Russian disinformation campaign.

The White helmets I haven't read up in detail yet but you are taking as gospel information provided by the Russians, The Supreme Ayotollah, and Assad, against the rest of the world - except for a few journalists. Higgins discusses that, one of the journalists was somewhat of a hero of his. Not so much now perhaps?

Bellingcat named the Russian agents guilty of the Salisbury poisoning. There is no question that a crime was committed as described and that there was collateral damage. An unrelated innocent party died of Novichok poisoning.

My strong impression is that you need to read the Bellingcat book more than I do. Unfortunately I have people queuing to read it when I've finished.

Be well.

Afternoon. Thanks for the reply.

Firstly, yes, I'm quite sure that Bellingcat would disagree, but I'm not unduly worried.

MH17
Thanks for the details on the missile launcher etc. But I'll stick with the Russian version of events at the moment. But if I feel the need to change and upgrade between disinformation campaigns in the future, I'll give Bellingcat a look-up. Promise. ;)

White Helmets
Only mentioned the White Helmets since you had in a previous email. Feel free to cross that one off the list for any future discussion.

Besides, supposedly being a Russian / Ayatollah / al Assad supporter, who am I to argue against the rest of the world? Well, western media, at the very least.

Skripals
Think that we had that KB debate within the last 2 years, where I doubted the story (stories) being told by British authorities at the time. And I haven't seen anything presented in the interim that would make me change my mind.

The only comment I would make is that bearing (i) the Skripals (ii) Salisbury in mind, I would advise Vlad to get a new Novichok supplier. Because the last batches were obviously faulty, and it has caused him a world of political embarrassment ever since.

I mean, if you're going to be portrayed as a maniacal tyrant hell bent on world domination (or was that Xi ?), you want to be able to project an aura of fear and invincibility. And quite frankly, two supposed "attempted poisonings using Novichok" .... it's not doing it for me.

Book Loan
Kind of you to offer, but I have a bookcase of other conspiracy theory material still to read. You can cross my name off your book list. Thanks.

Ride safely.

Cheers,
Viking

It might have taken nearly 65 days after having been elected, but I see Joe has finally managed to make his first solo press conference. The following story has a link to the conference:

https://southfront.org/cue-cards-and-pampering-joe-bidens-first-solo-press-conference/

I watched only the first 10 minutes, and can't say that I was overawed. Answering the first question on Covid - by making reference to the (intended $3 trillion) spend on infrastructure - will have done little to quell the doubters.

Anyway, it's always good to end with a "good news" story:

https://www.npr.org/2021/03/24/980785810/first-dogs-return-to-white-house-after-major-biden-causes-minor-injury

I can only surmise that Jill and Kamala both got tired of throwing the ball for Joe to chase, so they relented and brought the dogs back from Delaware. Plus they could be useful in helping keep the press crew at a respectable distance in the future.

Id have to say based on what I'm seeing in the press on both sides of the political divide that Biden and his team are mishandling the immigrant situation spectacularly badly.
Though I still think the wall is a shit idea, it looks like the Trump administration did a lot better job at keeping the tidal wave of migrants at bay.

Both sides?. I've been seeing reports that the current figures are a carryover from the late stages of the former guy's presidency.

Shouldn’t we be calling them third world super spreaders???? Is there hand sanitiser at the border? Did they scan the QR codes??

All of those immigrants come from countries that handled Covid better than did the US. They have to, every other country in the world handled Covid better than the US.

It seems the glaring indifference between real viewcounts and dislikes is exposing the sham support of the green screen President.

Kinda like how stuff news stopped voting on comments when people were exposing climate change scam before stopping comments altogether

Don't get me wrong, I strongly feel that Trump should swing for seriously down playing the pandemic, politicizing the wearing of masks and countless rallies during a virus surge. His actions and lack thereof killed thousands just to appease his vanity, ego, self interest and insecurities.
But on the question of immigration and border security - Biden and the dems are doing a really, really shit job.
I think some of it was Trumps unpredictability and hard line at the borders. Made the traffickers and stand alone bolters think twice. Now they view it as a free for all season with softy Biden and the dems.

Got to look out for those 'glaring indifferences'. Especially in an article about disliking things.

The most damning indictment - is when you hear from the Illegal Immigrants themselves - they straight up say they didn't come under Trump because they knew they wouldn't be let in and would be sent back, but now that Biden is in charge they can get through easily.

According to my reading the current surge at the border started in April last year. Biden was not president then, Trump was. Or was supposed to be.

Any major fuckups from January 20th are Biden's but anything prior to that is on Trump.

Yeah nah, under biden, the floodgates have opened.

This from the new York Times today..... Behind a pay wall so will post headline snippet.

Arrivals at the southern border surpassed a 15-year high in March, and included many unaccompanied minors.
Border officials encountered more than 170,000 migrants in March, a nearly 70 percent increase from February and the highest monthly since 2006, according to preliminary data.

That was Banter and was treated as such. I've met Sugi and despite our differing opinions - he's an absolute stand-up bloke.

Just something I'd like to focus in on - Of the 'Many Unaccompanied Minors' - There's a fair amount of ancillary evidence that an uncomfortable percentage of those are being sex-trafficed.

I'm curious to see what, if any, the media outrage will be on this.

Remember when that was a thing in news awhile ago, basically all men where evil, all prostitutes were human trafficking victims, the me too movement, “our girls” saga in Africa now you don’t hear anything now the media and the Elite are moving their pieces in a new move on the chessboard.

I guess the story didn’t go well with the whole migrant caravan thing whooops....

You won’t hear nothing on that angle, the media knows who owns them....

You’ll notice most staged false flags sorry mass shooter events happen in Democrat controlled areas where concealed carry or other measures limit public firearm possession.
You won’t read it in left controlled media but in USA 18,000 people a year defend them selves successfully with firearms in violent crimes

Alex Jones' "false flags and crisis actors" are going to bankrupt him even if he stays out of prison. Fucking good job.

Such idiocy ranks up there with the claims that Antifa and BLM were responsible for the coup attempt of Jan 6th.
