Hi guys, not long started a full nut and bolt resto of a 1984 fj1100
Tyre choice is limited for 16’s standard rear 150/80-16 anyone out there with opinion on going a bit wider?

Yeah overtyring will do bad things in most cases.
You could try a 17" conversion, think a mate did with his, but not std then.

There should be an DJ forum where people have done most changes.
Bridgestone BT45s usually cover most sizes.

Don't over tire your FJ, the rim is marginal width wise for the 150 so any thing bigger will be severely compromised in shape due to being pinched in by the rim. When I was selling motorcycle tires for a living I usually recommended a cruiser tire for the back of FJ's. They are heavy enough to make a cruiser tire work & you will get reasonable mileage out of them. As was stated earlier if you want some thing more sporty Bridgestone BT45 would be my recommendation.

Get the latest (Dec) Practical Sportsbikes. Theres a feature on a guy who has had an FJ1200 since new(ish) and he tells you which Yamaha wheels will bolt up to look the same but be 17's.

Ohh it arrived yesterday, and is right by my hand. Thundercat rear and he fitted a complete Exup RU front end. If you use Blue spot calipers like from an R1 etc make sure you fit the 14mm master cylinder. I did that on my YZF750SP.

Just read the article properly. It's a 1200, so axle sizes could be different. Not rocket surgery but some care is required to ensure correct spacers etc.
There is an FJ forum apparently, I'd go there if you want to pursue the change.

Pretty cool bike to do a resto on mate, ive not owned an 1100 but i did have a 1200 with 17s on it.
my experience of jap bikes of that era is the 16" front was not as bad as many people made out.. if you ran the stock tyre size theyd generally turn in nicely
.. well kinda 'flop in' lol but in a fun way.
Personally id stick with stock rims and tire sizes, either bt45 or pirelli sport demons:scooter:
