I'm surprised no one has started a thread on this, so here goes.

I'm hearing that people in South Auckland are turning off the Covid tracer app. It's not hard to understand why when 1,882 shoppers at K-mart had to go into isolation for 14 days...

R650R

The Covid tracer app stops the spread of the virus just as effectively as mandatory carrying of drivers licence stops unlicensed drivers from driving cars.

It’s kinda pointless though really, Jacinda has just demonstrated how willing the govt is to plunge the country into draconian lockdowns again for a few cases...
Now if EVERYONE in the current outbreak had scanned the SAME amount of people would be infected, the virus doesn’t care if your Bluetooth is on or not.
The resulting lockdown would prob be worse as with two deg of separation in modern society it would prob show even more people at risk of infection spreading...

But I guess we’ll all find that out soon enough when they decree it mandatory to scan everywhere

That is so weird, the pandemic is not yet over and some people think that they are smart enough to turn off the tracer app.

Definitely an issue with the thinking part.

For the benefit of the hard of thinking, and we do have some.

Jesus will not protect you from Covid 19. I saw video clips of that happening in the States, "I can't catch the virus, I've been washed in Jesus' blood".
I thought we were better than that, but apparently not. There will be lots of time to attend church after this is all over. Unless you keep going to clandestine church services during lockdown...

You can't wait until you feel sick to get vaccinated, it doesn't work like that.

Isolation means you stay at home. Strangely enough this means you don't go out with your mates, even for a game of cricket at the local park, or for a walk with a friend. Especially a friend who has just recently tested positive.

After you've been tested you isolate. At home, not at the fucking gym.

None of this is complicated. Although apparently it's too difficult for Aucklanders.

Yeah, I wonder why we only have a few cases ? any ideas anyone ?The first symptoms of the UK variant seem to be muscle aches and pains. So if people isolate at that stage, then they won't spread the virus once the respiratory symptoms start?

That's a wild guess, I really have no idea.

Look, I don't want to appear draconian, but after 30 years in public health specialising in pandemic management with a focus on sub Saharan Africa and the transmission of Ebola through nasal cavity mucal expression I think I have enough knowledge on the matter to proffer my interim solution.

Anyone from Auckland who shops at K-Mart and eats at KFC more than once a week should be shot. Close contacts such as family should also be shot. Close casual contacts should be marked as such on the forehead. Including that Tamaki fella currently super spreading around the lower south island in the name of lining his pocket further. Oh yes, and God.

Scuttle the Cook Straight ferries in Wellington harbour and quarantine the north island.

Job done.

A drivers license was never intended to stop people driving. It proves you took a (driving) test and passed. The main use and purpose of a drivers license is for effective identification.

The Covvid tracer app is for the effective identification of people in places where a Covid infected person was known to visit

'Herd immunity', also known as 'population immunity', is the indirect protection from an infectious disease that happens when a population is immune either through vaccination or immunity developed through previous infection

The time it takes the community to reach herd immunity status depends on the reproduction number of the virus ... The reproduction number is the average number of people that a single person with the virus can infect if those people aren’t (already) immune. Researchers think that the reproduction number for COVID-19 is between 2 and 3. This means that one person can infect two to three other people. It also means 50% to 67% of the population would need to be resistant before herd immunity kicks in and the infection rates start to go down.

I have not heard ANY member of the medical community claim any of the Covid vaccines currently being given out (World wide) is GUARANTEED to make you immune from the virus. Or stop you spreading it ... you may be just carrying the virus ... but not affected by it.
And some of those vaccinated may STILL get infected by the virus.

And I have not heard that if you are tested and get a negative result ... that it is because you are immune to the virus. It only means (for certain) that you haven't got it (yet).

It might only mean that you have not been in close (enough) contact with any infected person.

To ALL of you ... THAT should be your aim.

If you're feeling lucky ... buy a lotto ticket.

Good luck with that too ... ;)

Herd immunity is only assured if nobody in the herd has the virus.

Doing nothing to prevent being infected is probably not wise. As it is with road safety ... the more steps you take to stay safe ... the greater the likelihood you will be.

Nobody wants to be the first one in their family to catch the virus. Or the first to be killed in a road accident.

Stay safe.

Just saying ...

Everyone can have the virus in a vaccinated population, yet there can be herd immunity. Natural herd immunity must be different then innit to make your only an only.

The road to hell is often paved with good intentions... as proven by the otherwise perfectly healthy people who are now dead/injured because they took a vaccination.

Indeed, stay safe in whatever way You consider most appropriate for You.

Herd immunity is only assured if nobody in the herd has the virus.

More specifically - it works if the person or people within the herd only have interaction with those that have immunity (either from previous infection or vaccination), which breaks the transmission of the virus to outside the herd.

The quote is irrelevant. NZ does not currently have a significant population that have developed immunity through infection. Hopefully that will continue to be the case. That leaves vaccination.

Immunity does not mean you can't CARRY it (and spread the virus to those NOT immune) ... it just means you are immune from it's effects.

Irrelevant. Hmmmmm, let's see now. A vaccination that has the POTENTIAL to protect 70%, maybe 80% at a push v's a known natural survival rate of 99.x%... and you think everything else is irrelevant because vaccination is our best bet. That has to be the singularly most stupid statement you have ever made, and that is saying something!

It's completely irrelevant. In the absence of any immunity from infection in this country, vaccination is the answer. The percentages vary, I saw the Pom expert quoting 60% but I've also read 80%, and on the usual basis more is better I'll stick with that. That Pom expert doesn't currently have a very good record anyway.

Also you need to consider the context. I was replying to this:
"NZ has already achieved herd immunity? According to the governments and their tellybox comms, infected people have been oot and aboot without there being any new cases. Makes perfect sense "

Anyhoo if you still feel like an argument carry on without me.

the observed mortality rate for Covid ranges from 1.4-9%.
the USA at 1.8 and the UK at 2.9% and Italy at 3.3%
https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/mortality.
As the whole idea of vaccination is that it prevents people from catching the virus from passing on the virus and from dying from the virus
You seem to have decided on a number you are happy with at 1% yet you apparently do not accept a 100 times less death rate as a result of the vaccine.
The vaccination for TB has about the same level of effectiveness yet has whipped out TB from the developed world, but you know better?
Out of interest what is your medical training consist of again?

The stupidity continues with people visiting Florida for Bike Week and Spring Break and then likely taking the disease home with them all across the USA.

People may have made that complaint previously, but it seems to have escaped your notice that there has now been a pandemic for over a year caused by a virus the first symptoms of which are often loss of smell and taste.

Parts of Florida have announced an urgent shut down, there is a curfew and guests are confined to their hotels. The mass partying scared officials. It might have been better if they had just remembered what happened last year. But hey it is Forida...
