MERLIN gear

Saw some MERLIN Heritage pants and jackets in a bike shop today.

Is that stuff any good?

SD, I've got one of their jackets, it's currently my go to jacket. It's about three years old. Some stitching is coming undone on the left wrist but it's very minor. A stitch in time saves nine, but even so it's still so small I haven't bothered to get it fixed.

If I was in the market for a textile jacket I'd buy another one.

Rastuscat's website is Aussie stuff, but the Merlin brand is British, although "Made in Pakistan". My German BMW kit was made in Croatia, some Italian Sidi boots are made in Romania, my Redwing boots were made in China, Belstaff is now made in Italy, and so it goes.

Nah. The testing is done in Aussie (Deakin University), but the gear is from wherever it's from.

For example, all the Klim gear on MotoCAP was bought in Christchurch. Klim isn't sold in Australia, or at least it wasn't when the testing was done.

Even if you can't find your gear on MotoCAP, there's a lot to be learned about abrasion, impact, and thermal regulation on there.

Aside from my liquor fueled derogatory comments ;);

Aussie obviously have more skin in the game compared to our mild climate as far as thermal regulation.

I am slightly suspicious of test methods in any test realm as it can skew the importance of results. I've crashed dozens of times racing largely in the same set of leathers over 20+ years. ($500 AGV set) They have had several small patches. None have drawn blood, there has been no burst stitching. Improvement has all been around body armour within, although that creates points that are more likely to wear small holes, hence the patches.

So a testing method of putting a metal weight in a set and dragging it along an abrasive surface isn't the method I'd choose. I'd use a pig carcass. Or an anti vaxer.

Same goes for gloves. I've crashed in a dozen gloves. They vary in quality, but it was rare for the stitching to burst. Seems highly rated failure in motocap testing.

Armour became important in my 'testing ' once you've swollen knuckles.

The normal road rider should never crash that often, just the environment has much more serious things to hit, and, to be fair, chipseal is not a prominent feature on racetracks.
