So I was going to buy another electric pushbike and then this came along on tardme and it was $300 more and I'm like ... errrrr OK then. It arrived the day that lockdown was declared. And I have been working during lockdown which is OK for cashflow but not when you have a project in the shed.

The obvious thing is to lose those stupid clipons and put proper bars back on it. That will restore the steering geometry as well because dropping the forks through the clamps by 50mm won't have done it any favours.

I have a 22 item list of stuff to look at/fix but its mostly baseline stuff (fluids, oil and filter etc). For my own peace of mind I will change the belts I think.

If anyone has a set of handlebar clamps and handlebars that would be cool.

Oh, and where can I buy a rear paddock stand in fucking lockdown? Its like being 16 again and grovelling round on the floor.

And yes it started and ran on the button when it arrived and has a new WOF and is regoed till September. Woo Hoo!

Mine came standard with aluminium bars. When it got knocked over at work, the standard Magura brand bars were going to take forever, so I ordered Renthal. So close to the original I couldn't tell the difference. The service from the Renthal importer was excellent. I seem to recall the item was described as "high road bars".
Despite the name the bars weren't *that* high.

I have a pair of those Renthal high road bars in the shed I think - I had them on my Hornet 919 - much nicer than the Honda ones which were narrow and tall.

PM "old duck" on here - he has put more time into getting Ducatis to run properly than even the factory.

That looks pretty fit. Surprised if the front guard doesnt hit the oil cooler. Probably has the clickers wound in. Locks them right up. Align the axle properly and assuming same forks as sport, maybe that's too big assumption, you should get to clickers through the hole in axle.

Desperate for a tail Tidy and a smaller hugger. Engine paint always a bit flakey, but just rattle canning the foot peg hangers will make it look presentable. Assume you know to change belts if its been sitting or every 2 years,.

Hey. Just noticed you've used my quote in signature. [Beams with pride]

Congrats HDC! It'll be similar in a lot of points to my 900SS, sing out if you want any help.

Few baby steps over the weekend. The date code on the tyres is 3016 and 3216 so I will definitely be changing them. Plus "Nankang"? - yeah nah. Pilot Road or something. Or knobbies as is the trend. TKC80's or something.

These little grommets and rusty screws represent a couple of hours of my life I would like back. They hold the side covers on. The screw screws into a metal sleeve held by a rubber grommet. If the screw is hard to turn (because it is rusty and shitty and 30 years old) it spins the wee housing as well. I ended up using a pair of nail pliers to pull the whole thing through the fitting after cutting the rubber grommet in half. I suspect it has been sat in a carport for a while. The high side (R) is in significantly worse condition than the low side (L). I had an experimental sand of that footpeg bracket. I think I will take it back to bare aluminium with a scotchbrite equivalent finish - brushed not polished. The engine cover clutch side is also very average. The problem is once you start polishing a turd you get to the next bit and the next bit and the next bit.... and I dont want to do that. Goal is a tidy up and run around not a bottomless money pit.

Can't do fuckall really till I can get the wheels off and it safely up on a stand so just pottering about.

I might have tracked down some handlebar clamps though so thats good. I can buy some from CMS NL but they are 74 euro I think.

Without wishing to tell you how to suck eggs, when I had my Duc I saw sets of stainless fasteners for various models on EBay. The standard ducati screws must be Trump supporters, they go orange overnight.

Apropos of nothing much, I once read a poem on a Ducati owners site. Alas I can't find it now but the poet knew that of which he wrote.

The only words I can remember:

I bought a new Ducati
It runs as smooth as silk
But now the fun has started
The sight glass looks like milk.

And yes, mine did that too.

Are the fasteners supposed to look like in the picture? I bought a kit for my ST2 and replaced the whole lot, so have a bunch of leftovers if it's the right thing.

I'll endorse this. The gentleman referred to has been breaking and working on Ducs for many years. Rather than trying for bits from overseas, try him first.

Yep, that's the name.

Not unique to ducati, some of my leftovers are running around on a Honda somewhere

Yeah, I've had the engine oil cappuchino too, happens if there's a few cold starts and short trips. Riding for a couple of hours straight sorts it out.

I near crapped myself when I took off the cap and saw this stuff that looked like Caramello under it. I was all like " this thing is air cooled how the fuck did water get in the oil"?.

Great service from Mega Motorcycle Centre and Eurobike - I ordered a paddock stand yesterday and it was here this morning. Unlike my box of bakery goods which is due today. Almond croissant the size of my head!!!

My Monster had a 996 engine so when I saw the sight glass there was briefly cause for concern, until I learned milkshakes came standard.

I had a dozen Behemoth due to be couriered today. The beer is packed and ready to go but the sellers are in Kumeu and the area is underwater. The couriers can't get in to pick up the orders.
OK I'm not in a hurry.

No, no, and yes.

It even includes the picturesque Lake Bryndwr track which I rode my pushbike around aged about 10, but which I couldn't locate when I got Google maps. Now I know why.

Belts, shims, service items (plugs filters oil) done. Also carb rebuild. tyres are next and a rear shock. Have handlebar clamps but the handlebars I had in a box are tweaked so I get to do that again. I will also change the fork oil. Chrome on stanchions not great but will give them a polish before I replace. One front disc is slightly warped but within wear tolerance. Low priority but will replace in due course.

Apart from that, its a minta!

HDC... Who did you use to help you in the end?

Muzza Sutherland - his business is Mecanica https://www.mecanica.co.nz/

Primarily chosen as it is close to my work but honestly he has been fantastic to deal with. I've also gotten hold of a couple of bits from specialist Italian bike wreckers but only little stuff. Its been good fun and no pressure because I have another bike to ride.

You dont want warp if you can avoid it for heavy braking.

What do they match up to? My YZF had Brembo type Yam discs. I replaced with some 2nd hand Aprilia I recall, but had rebuilt set before with PVM rotors, I might have something where one us straight, one warped. Likely different pattern but yours for postage if match yam fitment.

How it is currently sitting. I sourced a new old rear shock just before Christmas so am just putting that in and buttoning it up again. Thats the last of the jobs on the list - except it grew by one item as it needs the clutch looking at. By the feel of it the tangs on the outer basket are worn to a sawtooth. and the thing isnt disengaging so I might get to rebuild it. If I do that I will replace the hose as it is original to the bike.

Interesting it turned out the brake issue (pulsing felt like a worn/warped disc) was in fact the disc not being free to move on the bobbins. some brake cleaner, and a few taps with a rubber mallet freed it up and its mint.

I see the finish line.

You are indeed lucky if that us the case. I've spent a bit of time spinning bobbins and cleaning in desperation to no avail.

It was the right front disc. My operating theory is that it has sat outside on the sidestand under a tarp for a while at some point. The right side cosmetics are way worse than the left side. Interesting that Monseigneur Galluzzi specced a silver paint for a lot of the alloy castings. Which has mostly flaked off. If I was restoring it I would strip the engine back to bare castings and vapour blast it. But then instead of having a $4k bike that owes me (currently) nearly $7k I would have a $4k bike that owed me $20k!

Here's a youtube series I enjoyed.

fullish list here Dave
http://www.exup1000.co.uk/tech_info_area/rotors.htm

later Dukes were 5 hole and some of the aprilias and other with radial calipers were 5mm rather than 10mm offset.R1 on went to funny disc with bigger centers small dia . plenty other FZ etc were same pattern only 296 or 278mm etc

rarest of all 320mm yam patern is the 748r and 998R and OW01 and i think a few TZ's which were 15mm off set you want these for spoked wheels. (or big spacers) to clear the spokes.
pretty sure the Honda early disk big bikes were the same bolt pattern as well. but the 750 at least was 40 spoke.

You can paint the motor complete and to quite a good std easily enough if you are very careful. Smooth Silver Hammerite spray cans x 2 will do the job but you need to put etch primer on first. Carefull application of paintstripper will get rid of all the old stuff, clean up with acetone and get painting.

Nice video series. He did have the advantage of starting with a bike that was very unmolested.
