And some mystery points found as well but that dam carving is stymying me. Should be on the Kaikoura Coast but damned if I can spot it.

re the coastal mystery. Don't make the mistake of thinking that its north of KK.

I knew that much. I narrowed it down to just north of the Oaro River. I have now found out that it was built after the google maps car went through last so am now going to check using the surroundings/signs in the photo.

Found it using the power pole and guard rail. Doesn't quite look the same on street view but definitely the right place.

The mystery that is giving me grief is the Otago one. It seems familiar, but I just can't place it. Not that I need it, my route has enough points without it.

My route doesn't 'need' it, but my determination to include it does. That one took a while to find...

Check out www.tt2000.org

Basically, for 2022 you start in Blenheim at midday on Friday, and finish at Tokoiti (near Milton) by midday on Sunday and choose your own route of at least 2000 km. There are a large number of checkpoints on the way with points values from 30 to 250 points per checkpoint and you need at least 2000 points by the end of the ride. Details and locations of each checkpoint are on the website. Each province has a pair of compulsory checkpoints, and your route must include 2 of these pairs, so for Canterbury these would be OKains Bay (you love that road) and Mt Cook. There are also 5 mystery checkpoints where the location is not given and these are worth 150 points each.

Do it, You'll love it.

so... why the different points for location... harder to get to like up a creak and over a cliff...?

so... why the different points for location... harder to get to like up a creak and over a cliff...? Sort of. Okains Bay is 250 points because you have to go well off the main roads to get there. Chertsey is only 40 points because it is practically right on the Main road. Duntroon is 75 points because it will take you off the main road, but may be on your route elsewhere.

Yep, and if you live in the South Island it gives you lots of reasons to go out on your bike for 'scouting missions' to check out some of those checkpoints, best routes, etc between now and Feb.

Keep an eye on the website. One of the compulsory checkpoints, Waitaria Bay, has the road to it closed and isn't expected to re-open for around 12 months. I believe Mr McDougall has been looking for a replacement.

Nice to see some of you out on the road. My brother and I spent the weekend riding around the South Island and I'm sure I saw some of you out there.

My brother in particular enjoyed a night time blast through Lewis Pass with what I assume were a couple of TT riders based on the time of night and their rate of progress.
